I read that Penn State has a 1.8 billion dollar endowment, 102 million of which can be used by the athletic department. I'm sure that's enough to cover their smaller programs for a couple of seasons if the football program can't support them. Also, I doubt that the 60 million will have to be paid all at once; PSU can pay 2-4 million dollars a year for 15-30 years.

Did you not read the rest? It is next to impossible for PSU to pay a 60 million dollar fine, and maintain all of their other sports at the same level of funding, with a 4 year bowl ban. They will not recieve any bowl revenue and the program will suffer a great deal. They will have much less money coming in, yet will be expected to maintain status quo AND pay the fine. When PSU drops funding to another sport many will cry foul, but when the cash cow is shot what can be done?
Yes, I read it but I could really care less about it to be frank with you. If you think $73 mil is bad from the NCAA & the BigTen wait till the number goes public about the civil cases. Basically, PSU got the death penalty - they can just keep playing if that makes sense....
It is more than 73 million. They is just what is guaranteed to be lost/paid out right now. The rest of the impact will come from lost $ at the gate and that can be many millions over the next 4-5 years. I could care less if you care. Go pay attention to something else if you don't care.

Hey Franks-

If seeing what's happening to the reputation of Joe Paterno and the Penn State Football program upsets you, you could always just turn your back and pretend it isn't happening...

They had a choice: Protect the program, or protect children. They chose the program. They deserved everything they got, and they'll still get more.

This is not what was being discussed.. Cover-up or incompetence, reason for the cover-up and other issues can be discussed without making reference to the fact that their duty was to protect the children. That is abundantly clear. Posting that over and over detracts from more specific conversations like monetary penalties. They should've done everything possible to protect the children. That has never been in doubt. You don't need to insert it whenever anything related to PSU is being discussed.

From Graham Spanier
"It is unfathomable and illogical to think that a respected family sociologist and family therapist, someone who personally experienced massive and persistent abuse as a child, someone who devoted a significant portion of his career to the welfare of children and youth, including service on the boards of four such organizations, two as chair of the board, would have knowingly turned a blind eye to any report of child abuse or predatory sexual acts directed at children," Spanier wrote to trustees. "As I have stated in the clearest possible terms, at no time during my presidency did anyone ever report to me that Jerry Sandusky was observed abusing a child or youth or engaged in a sexual act with a child or youth.

"This conclusion should have been abundantly clear to Mr. Freeh and his colleagues who interviewed me for five hours before their report was finished and interrogated scores of employees about me. Yet the report is full of factual errors and jumps to conclusions that are untrue and unwarranted."

Spainer is obviously defending himself, but I post this to say I still feel the total truth has not come out. The Freeh report does not have an account of the interview with Spanier. I believe we see one e-mail from him stating it will be humane to Gerry not to report. Graham has a lot of explaining to do, but I feel he should get the chance to do so.

1) I understand your point on the bowl ban/money. Football was the primary revenue source for the PSU athletic department and it's difficult if not impossible for the school to pay the fine and continue to fund all of its other athletic programs. I haven't read the full report yet and I don't think I'll go into that level of detail but I'm curious about what will happen to PSU's share of BTN revenues? It will be a tough time but the penalties are meant to both punish poor decision-making (or lack of good decision making) and to send a message to other programs. Penn State leadership got them into this mess and they'll have to figure out a way to survive it.

2) You can make an argument for starting with 1998. While charges might not have been pressed, the administration was still aware of the allegations and could have done a better job of both keeping an eye on Sandusky going forward as well as establishing procedures to limit the possibility that he would ever be alone with a child.
1- They will forfeit all shared Big 10 Bowl revenue for 4 years.

2- Perhaps but PSU broke no criminal or NCAA rules prior to 2001. It is a stretch IMO.
All B1G0 bowl revenue or all B1G0 revenue? B1G0 revenue for this past year was reportedly $24.6 million/school except for Nebraska which received a smaller share. There is a lot more in there than just bowl revenue.

I believe it is just bowl revenue, which is estimated at 13 million over the 4 year bowl ban. If they removed TV revenue and the like it would be a HUGE loss of revenue.

So it appears that they'll still be getting approximately $20 million in B1G0 revenue per year. This is going to hurt but I think the athletic department can survive long-term.

You are an immature little boy. You are probably scrawny, unemployed and unathletic, and haven't played a sport since age 8. You take satisfaction in the failures of others because you have never been able to complete, yet you are an online authority for all things sports. With wisdom, experience, and education you will understand that it is possible to be very upset and saddended by the events that happened at Penn State, yet still be upset by the reporting and penalties levied without full due process. Acusing a multi-level cover-up is really big. The Freeh report uncovered some pertinent and even damming information, but not really enough to without question prove a cover-up. Using just that report the NCAA has levied massive fines and sanctions that will cost the university 10's of millions of dollars. This is very serious and some very educated adults have issues with the Freeh report, the lack of due process, the role of the media and the role of the NCAA. It is possible to have legitimate conversations about these issues without being an apologist for Penn State or child rape. I hope you learn how to think like an educated adult soon or you will be living in Mom's basement with your Pokemon toys for a long time.

The only satisfaction I take from this case is that immoral hacks like JoePa and Sandusky will get slammed and that their apologists who were so self-righteous about their school and how it conducted themselves are now being forced to eat the crap sandwich they were trying to feed the rest of us. I could care less that Penn State is going in the crapper for a long time. Good riddance. I won't shed a tear. :ohno:

The thing that really chaps my ass when it comes to the cultists and apologists who dare to support Penn State in spite of overwhelming evidence that their school and athletic department had priority issues is the fact that they are hiding behind the law and whining about due process and how the media painted them when they are in this situation because of what they themselves did. I for one do not give a damn about due process and I once again applaud the NCAA for handing swift justice down in Crappy Valley, Pa.   I don't care about the legality of what was done or how it got done, so long as it was the right thing to do. And it was. :twocents:
Don't like it? Too bad. Don't sell your soul to a false idol like Joe Paterno again.
You want fairness? Too bad. You don't deserve it. Those kids deserved fairness. They got none and you forfeit your right to it as a result of it in my humble estimation.

I surely don't need to waste my time refuting any of the garbage you're trying to paint me as, since I've never been to Lafayette and have spent less than four hours of my life in the state of Pennsylvania. We've never met and never will, God willing (you can also be rest assured that I am employed, well-educated, and am a member of a local rec league basketball team where I live). Just like your beloved Penn State leaders, I am not the kind of person you think I am. You should be getting used to the feeling by now.

Your viewpoint here is now abundantly clear.

1- You have clearly hated Penn State for many years. You are happy that this terrible situation happened at Penn State. You are a disgusting and vindictive little man who takes pleasure in the suffering of others, including the innocent victims apparently. Then again what else would I expect from an Ohio State fan! One who has a hard-on for Urban Meyer while he preaches that Penn State fans are evil for respecting Joe Paterno
2- Maybe you should look up due process in the dictionary. If you were ever accused of a crime or wrong doing in any manner you would be damm happy due process were available to you. Whether or not you agree with the sanctions, you must admit that PSU got railroaded by the NCAA. PSU was given an ultimatium by the NCAA while not performing their own investigation or following due process. It may be true that no other information comes out and it was the right thing to do, but that will be by sheer luck because they simply don’t know everything. False idol Joe? Ya right. I was a big Penn State fan as child and teenager, but only followed the program somewhat since I became an adult. Perhaps you should be careful making an idol out of Urban Meyer.
3- Next time you spend 4 hours traveling through PA, you should stop and shake someone’s hand. The state and people you hate brought you this great country, with the right of due process, and it all started on July, 4th, 1776. General Washington camped in Valley Forge and the good people of PA help his army through a terrible winter to win our freedom. Decades later PA preserved the union by repelling Lee and his rebels in the small crossroads town of Gettysburg. PA built this country, and was the epienter of the industrial revolution in the USA. Coal and ore mined in PA was used to fuel the greatest mills and factories the world has ever seen in places like Pittsburgh and Bethlehem. We built the railroads, bridges, buildings and the infrastructure of this country. We mined the coal that heated homes, fueled factories, and provided transportation to the country. We provided the industrial might that built the ships and guns and tansk that won WWII. Many of the sons and daugthers of these hard working people went off to Penn State to get an education and have a better life. They watched and liked and were proud of the football team, but it was a part of th eexperience. But I know you feel the state of PA and Penn State is worthless in your uninformed opinion. I know many guys just like you. Pencil necked geeks who think they know everything there is to know about sports, yet have never done anything but play rec league basketball. Since you have none of the athletic ability you so desire you tear down everyone else is a snarky manner. You are the worst kind of sport fan.

End of rant. Have fun playing rec league basketball in ND.

What's all this got to do with Paterno et al looking the other way while the #2 in charge fvcks little boys in the a$$?

BTW since PA hung the moon, founded the USA, and cured cancer, doesn't carrying Obama in the last election sort of cancel all that out? Call it a wash?

That was funny.

It has nothing to do specifically what Joe did, try to keep up.

1. Of course I don't like Penn State. They had been a huge pain in the ass for the rest of the Big 10 for years. I only said Penn State fans should have been more careful than to blindly trust their coach. Respecting a coach and deifying him are not the same. Penn State went the "deify" route. Ohio State fans by and large have yet to go that route. You could make a case for Alabama fans and Nick Saban, but I digress. I trust Urban Meyer to do one thing and one thing only- coach the team and do it better than anyone not named Saban. He's not my moral compass. He is not my own personal idol. Merely a fine coach that I am very happy Ohio State was fortunate enough to hire.

2. I am aware of what due process is. I simply don't care. Out of sight, out of mind. Not my problem. I just like seeing the right thing being done regardless of how it gets done.

3. I am well aware that Pennsylvania has one of the richest histories of any state in the country. The whole point I was raising by saying I only spent four hours there was to point out that you and I have never met before. Therefore, none of your attempts to assassinate my character are made with reason or any basis in fact. You're certainly entitled to an opinion. I never said the state was worthless...only that Penn State's priorities and ethics were misplaced. I also never claimed to be a "pencil-necked sports expert." (To be fair, there a plenty of people in sports media who didn't play high level competitive sports and somehow they still get paid to offer expertise. Not saying that I am one, only that I wouldn't be so arrogant as to claim that only people who played sports in high school can make arguments about it.) And I thought I was supposed to be the cynical d-bag around here...

Huh? How many Ohio State fans named their kids after Woody Hayes? How many fans started wearing neckties and sweatervests when Tressel came along? OSU fans are just like PSU fans in their rabidness and love of their program - only difference is Paterno lasted longer before getting caught/dying than those other two did. PSU isn't a special case - they are representative of a wide swath of schools that live and breathe football and make weird, irrational decisions because of it. Luckily, PSU is the only one so far that has protected a child rapist.

Yes it does. He knew his buddy was cornholing little boys in the showers and he reported it to others who he knew would do nothing (because they were members of the same organization, with grotesquely misplaced priorities).

Paterno the Great knew what was going on and he fluffed. So much for ethics on the PSU coaching staff. Heck they didn't even limit Sandusky's access once they knew. The guy was poking every prepubescent greasy starfish he could get his hands on and nobody saw nuttin!

If it had been a third string practice squad guy playing hide the sausage with little boys they would have strung him up.

Detachment from reality. That is the only way Paterno's lack of action can be described.
