Volleyball
Re: Volleyball
Big weekend for MVC volleyball.
UNI and Missouri State are tied for 1st, with both being undefeated in conference.
Preseaon favorite, Wichita State (who had been in the top 25 for a month or so to start the season) is in 3rd.
WSU plays at UNI Friday night, and then UNI hosts MSU.
Go Panthers!

Re: Volleyball
Liberty's volleyball seems to be slipping a bit this year... the past couple years we have dominated the Big South, but injuries and suspect defense, along with a team that might be a little too used to winning and not have a killer instinct, have been holing this team back. Here's to hoping we can turn that around by tournament time...

Re: Volleyball
I'm a big fan of Penn State volleyball. They have won the last two national championships and are currently ranked #1. They are only 4 wins short of tying the UCLA men's basketball winning streak of 88 games and only 8 wins away from surpassing the North Carolina women's soccer winning streak of 91 games, currently the longest winning streak in NCAA history.

Re: Volleyball
That's fine for Penn State, but hey, man, we're talking Championship Division, down here where the money's scarce nad the arenas are small. Nice to hear about UNI. Sounds like they're involved in the same sort of conference scrambles we are in the Big Sky, with three teams tied for first. Those teams play each other once over the next three weeks and that should resolve the tie but there's no telling. I'm betting on PSU. We have the Montanas coming up this weekend (we should beat them), but then we've got EWU and UNC and it's up for grabs. Once we take care of the conference we can worry about Penn State.

There is no FCS in volleyball. And there is only one PSU and it ain't in Oregon.

And I suppose you would say that there is only one OSU, or one ISU, or one ASU.......CitadelGrad wrote:There is no FCS in volleyball. And there is only one PSU and it ain't in Oregon.
No, there isn't "FCS" in volleyball, nor is there officially anything such as "mid-majors" in basketball.
But athletic departments whose football teams participate in FBS conferences (or more accurately, the BCS conferences) tend to have higher all-around athletic budgets and more financial resources.

I imagine half the people who've heard of Portland State think it's in Maine. I did. PSU = Penn State.

I was also kind of poking fun at a certain other Citadel poster around here. ;op

UNI's volleyball team has won 20 straight matches,
and moved into the top 25 in the country this week (well, they're tied with St. Marys for #25, but still)

Re: Volleyball
TXST volleyball has clinched at least a tie for the SLC. They were SLC champs last year, as well. Along with the soccer team, they will repeat as champions. Now, if the Football team can keep going like Saturday ......

Re: Volleyball
UNI does indeed look pretty good this year. Penn State our look-alike (PSU) looks better - 1st in the country with no losses yet! Whereas we're scrambling around down around 90th. But we're still scrambling. The Big Sky conference will hang on the match with Northern Colorado this next week. We've taken EWU out of the equation, now only UNC remains. If we do get to the NCAAs, Oregon or UCLA will probably eliminate us - won't see you guys back east.
Re: Volleyball
Okay. Yeah, I'd probably conceed that Penn State is better than UNI (this year).
But hey, if we end up bracketed against them in the NCAA tourney.... then bring 'em on!

NDSU's has now won 35 straight conference matches, which tops the record NIU since 1993.
The Bison won the match in dramatic fashion, beating rival SDSU in five sets in front of the 1,808 fans at the BBF.

Re: Volleyball
That's only because they haven't played UNI...we are THAT good.

Re: Volleyball
Unless my math is off, it looks like UNI has only dropped 15 sets all year. Only 4 times has UNI gone to 5 games.
UNI's set record is 74-15

What keeps UNI winning? Just curious. Do they have a big front line? Lots of seniors? An outstanding hitter with lots of kills? Or...?

Re: Volleyball
I just checked - Penn State's got a VERY tall team! And it looks like they recruit from all over the country, including California.
Re: Volleyball
UNI has one senior. And they have some front line players in the 6'1" range, but no one super tall.frinq wrote:What keeps UNI winning? Just curious. Do they have a big front line? Lots of seniors? An outstanding hitter with lots of kills? Or...?
They rank 2nd in the nation in kills per set as a team, but don't have a single player in the top 250 in the individual stats for that category. So a very well-rounded offense, instead of relying on just one or two power hitters.
They have good defense, especially their jr. libero, Ellie Blankenship (who is currently third nationally in digs/set), but other players also put forth defensive effort.
Plus their jr. setter, Bre Payton does a great job of distributing the attack to the various hitters, as well as providing a fair amount of offense on her own.
The majority of UNI's roster and talent comes from right here in Iowa. Which, IMO, is more impressive.

Re: Volleyball
Probably because there is no comparison. I follow women's volleyball pretty closely. While UNI has a nice team for a mid-major conference, I would be shocked if they managed to reach the sweet sixteen. Depending on the draw, they might make it to the round of 32.JayJ79 wrote:I made no statement regarding how the teams would compare in other years.CitadelGrad wrote:
