What is JMU ranked? What is App St ranked? What is this? Welfare for the less fortunate FBS teams.
GameDay should be in Corvallis for #5 Washington @ #10 Oregon State.
…Why did ESPN pass on Oregon State?
Then again, if ESPN wants to minimize conversation about the sobering TV dollars-driven reality of college football and the role a changing media rights space played in the collapse of the conference, then passing on a trip to Corvallis is the way to go.
You can’t set up camp in Corvallis without addressing the elephant in the room: the outsized influence of television networks in college football. The notion that they are puppet masters helping to drive conference realignment moves certainly wasn’t tamped down this summer.
As Pac-12 insider John Canzano wrote, ESPN “decided to avoid a potentially awkward scene, given that television played a role in the demise of the Pac-12. Maybe the network was concerned there would be backlash.”….

Virginia AG threatens legal action on behalf of James Madison football
A law firm engaged by Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares on Wednesday sent a demand letter to the NCAA, obtained by ESPN, that threatens legal action if James Madison's "exclusion from bowl consideration in 2023" isn't reversed.
The letter was sent in advance of the decision by the NCAA on Wednesday night to deny James Madison a postseason waiver approval. It asks for a response by noon on Friday.
The Dukes are 10-0 and ranked No. 18 in the latest AP Top 25 poll. They have not been included yet in the College Football Playoff rankings because they aren't eligible for the postseason.
"We are prepared to act on behalf of JMU in the unfortunate circumstance that JMU's request for relief is not timely approved. Specifically, JMU is prepared to promptly file a lawsuit in the Western District of Virginia asserting that the bowl ban violates the antitrust and, potentially, other laws."
….The NCAA demonstrates that they, once again, ignore the best interests of our nation's student-athletes. The NCAA has made an arbitrary and capricious decision that has an anti-competitive and profoundly negative impact on student-athletes, JMU, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and collegiate football as a whole."
Miyares also referenced the potential economic benefit to the school, which is a state university.
"This injustice transcends athletics, and should not be allowed to stand. After repeated warnings to the NCAA, they still refuse to do what is right. Therefore, I am prepared to expose the NCAA's unlawful conduct and seek justice for James Madison University through litigation, provided the University authorize me to do so."
Well, at least it was a great game. If you get CGD at the sub P5 level it means you’re undefeated in Oct or Nov facing a good opponent. 3 CGDs JMU has hosted, and none of the 3 have they played well, suffering 2 big upsets. CGD is a distraction and/or may be a motivator for the other team, increasing the chance of an upset. Thought App played well, esp on defense. As much as it sucks in the current, even an L is well worth long run because of increased exposure, $$, and recruiting, which will lead to more Ws/less Ls down the road.
2023 App 26, JMU 23 (OT). App leadibg 20-12 late 4th qtr JMU converts on 4th and 18, scores TD with under a minute, coverts 2 point conversion before. In OT on 3rd down App barely gets ball over goal line FTW.
JMU’s losses I think worse considering were Nov vs Sept and what was at stake each time.

The east comes down to the final week with three potential teams trying to reach the championship game. If Coastal beats JMU they are in due to head to head wins over both other hopefuls. They could also get the berth if App loses to Georgia Southern and JMU loses to the NCAA. JMU needs to beat Coastal and the NCAA. App needs to beat Georgia Southern, have the NCAA beat JMU and JMU beat Coastal.
If you had told me a month ago that App would be in this position, I would have called you crazy.

Absolutely love having y'all in the conference.

Tough news for JMU, but not really surprising. App lost two head coaches in two years. I guess it's the price of G5 success.
Sucks for JMU that 2nd year in a row finished 1st place SBC East but not going to SBCCG (JMU 7-1, APP 6-2). Think the SBC rule is as BS as the NCAAs. Last yr because JMU took the unusual step of playing a full FBS schedule year 1 that meant GSU’s win over JMU counted, giving GSU a 6th counting win and enaing them to go to a bowl.
Last year Week 13 JMU boat raced CCU 47-7, both finished 6-2, yet CCU went to the SBCCG. This year at least the team that beat JMU is going. If App hadn’t taken care of business vs GSU, then 7-5/5-3 CCU would be going despite JMU boat racing them last Sat 56-14.

It looks like 12 Sun Belt Conference teams will play in bowl games. I'd like to be excited, but that shit's crazy.
JMU and JSU going bowling because only 79 bowl eligible teams for 41 bowls/82 spots. As I’ve seen it explained the bowls don’t have to pick 79 teams before filling the last 2 spots with JMU, JSU & 5-7 Minnesota. Once the NY6 and bowl tie ins are filled, its fair game for the bowls and ESPN to get the matchups they want. Apparently a lot of horseteading goes on. All about matchups/eyeballs and butts in seats. So its possible JMU could end up in a better bowl game than if had been in the SBCCG with no NY6, esp if lost in a rematch to Troy.

Thought I posted this on here earlier this season, but can’t find it.
*Total Pay HC salaries for 119 of 133 FBS schools. See methodology for explanation on lack of info for 14 schools.
Cignetti $677k 49th of 61 G5 schools listed. G5 range 435k (Bowden at UL Monroe) to $2.842 million (Fritz at Tulane). Former JMU HC Mike Houston at ECU 3rd among G5 at $2.355 million.
P5 range: Saban 11.407 million to Washinton St (2.7 million).
So that means JMU offered Cignetti over 1 million.
Someone said on JMU board said former IU HC was being paid 4.9 mil, so I’m sure Cignetti was offered at least 2 mil, with commensurate increases for staff (I’m sure he’ll take a large chunk of his JMU staff with him). JMU can’t compete with Big 10 $$. Course good chance he and whole staff are fired in a few years. Nature of the business.

DAMN IT DAMN IT DAMN IT DAMN IT DAMN IT DAMN IT DAMN IT DAMN IT DAMN IT DAMN IT DAMN IT DAMN IT!
Would you prefer the opposite problem? That you coach wasn't successful enough for P5 programs to want to hire.
I heard that brother Frank Jr. is available. Curt might be available to return in 2-5 years.
No, its a nice problem to have. But sucks for JMU fans that JMU is 11-1, nationally ranked, chance to go 12-1, started 17 of 22 NON seniors the last 4 games, and will be heading into next season with only their 3rd FBS recruit class/2nd full FBS class. With Cignetti returning would likely be pre season Top 25 (or even 20), with a chance at one of 2 G5 spots in next year’s 12 team playoff. Now with a new HC if a hire isn’t made QUICKLY could lose guys to portal, lose HS commits, and lose opportunities to get certain portal and late HS committ guys. Plus the longer it takes the less top flight HC and assistant possiblities are available. If the hire doesn’t happen quickly could set the program back several years from the current upward trajectory.
I thought with Cignetti being 62 maybe he would look to retire in the next 5 or so years, JMU would bump him to 1 to 1.5 million over the next 5 years, and keep him. But when he said on the Pat McAfee show that he planned to coach till 75, I thought might lose him.
