Boise can't get a quality game!

Post by isumatt »

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/n ... &type=lgns

Is it cowardice or collusion?

Boise State athletic director Gene Bleymaier is all but begging for a major opponent – any major opponent – to play his Broncos, particularly in 2011. He can hardly get his calls returned. Not by the SEC. Not by the Big Ten. Not by anyone.

Bleymaier is making a nearly unheard of offer in college football scheduling – Boise will bring its popular, high-profile, top-10 team to any stadium in any town to play any big name team in America in 2011. And they don’t have to return the date in Idaho.

So far, no one has bit.

ESPN has even become involved trying to broker a deal that will almost assuredly be nationally televised. Still no luck.

It’s the kind of non-conference game that should have schools salivating. Boise delivers an opponent that will challenge your players, exposure that will extend your brand and a home game that will excite your fans.

“It’s been surprising how many big schools have not been receptive of us coming to their place,” Bleymaier said.

This is the conundrum for the upstart program and every non-major conference school trying to battle for national respect.

Boise is 44-4 over the past four seasons, including 4-1 against major conference opponents. Yet that doesn’t guarantee the Broncos a slot in a big money BCS bowl due to the level of competition they play in the Western Athletic Conference.

The school acknowledges it needs to play tougher teams. Yet how can they beat quality opponents if quality opponents won’t play them?

Interesting concept, ain't it? The big boys tell Boise that they need to play someone, yet no one will schedule them. When they do play one of the BCS teams (Oregon), they are told that, even though Boise won, that game doesn't count because Oregon beat USC. But yet, Boise needs to play someone, but it can't be FCS, it can't be the WAC, and it can't be anyone really.

Tell me again why any team in the FCS would want to move up and subject themselves to this tomfoolery?

You know, as far as I can tell the only basis people have for believing Boise State can't schedule more BCS league teams for non conference games is Boise State saying so. Why doesn't the guy at least name names so the reporter can go to the people who supposedly won't schedule Boise State and ask them about it? I think the idea that Boise State just CAN'T get more than one BCS league team per year to play it (that's usually what it is) is nonsense.

I've said it in other threads and I'll say it again. There are other non BCS league programs who've shown themselves to be dangerous to BCS leauge teams and they're able to get games against BCS league teams.

You can say all this shit if you want to but all it would take is ONE quality opponent to say that they were willing to fill a hole with Boise but Boise said "No". I don't see that happening anywhere. Did you see something like this somewhere to help you with your "feeling" on it that goes contrary to what Boise, ESPN, and Yahoo are saying? If you did then it would be interesting to see, if you are just going on how you feel about it then you may as well go piss in the wind cuz you certainly appear to be mistaken.

As far as I know all ESPN and Yahoo are doing is reporting what Boise State is saying. It's not like there has been any real corraboration of what Boise State is saying. You choose to just believe Boise State when they say they just CAN'T find ANY BCS league school to play them. I don't.

Name another non-BCS program that has had as much success as Boise St. in the last few years. The only one that even comes close is TCU. How interesting that TCU and Boise St. both get into a BCS bowl this year - and had to play each other.

Not only can't Boise St. schedule BCS conference teams, they don't even get to play one when they get into a BCS bowl. :ohno:

The whole BCS system is set up to exclude non-BCS teams, it is not that hard to believe that BCS teams would not want to schedule teams that might really be able to challenge them.

Um, they're playing Virginia Tech next year. Is VaTech not a quality game or are we picking and choosing what's quality? They even said it during the Fiesta Bowl.

SHENANIGANS!!!!

That game looks pretty sick, neutral site at FedEx field... probably easier for Boise fans to travel to DC than Blacksburg. Still, will be majority tech fans.

I poised the question to a Boise fan I know - the AD won't name names, because that kills any chance that Boise might have of ever getting games with those schools.

And you can't compare Boise to ECU, etc - no non-BCS school has won TWO BCS bowls like Boise has. Boise is in a league of it's own in that regard.

No, the ACC is not a quality conference. They'd be better off playing a MWC team...or even a CAA team.

Yes and they are real happy to get that one. The point is that even when offering to forgoe the H&H they can't get one. They need a little more than one a year in their minds as the one win against Oregon this year still left the BCS boys and the pollsters with doubts as to their abilities.

Conference Records in BCS Bowl Games:
SEC 13-5 (72.2%)
WAC 2-1 (66.7%)
MWC 2-1 (66.7%)
Pac 10 9-5 (64.3%)
ACC 2-10 (16.7%)
Big East 6-6 (50%)
Big 10 10-11 (47.6%)
Big 12 7-9 (43.75%)
Independents (read: Notre Dame) 0-3 (0.00%)

How sad is it that the two NON-BCS conferences that have been "allowed" to play with the big boys (or play with each other, as in this year's case) have BETTER overall records in BCS games than five of the six AUTOBID conferences.

And you gotta love Notre Dame's performance.

Every year, this whole fiasco becomes a bigger and bigger cluster fuck.

I suppose you're feelings are right then and although your only backup on said feeling is "as far as you know" that I should probably stop throwing caution to the wind with ESPN and Yahoo's stories. I mean it's not like they would do any fact checking or anything like you did as far as I know.

ESPN is probably lying about trying to broker a deal for one of these games as a primetime football game. Solid work on this one JSO. :thumb:
