If this is true, old school Georgia fans are going to collectively heave. This is horrible for Georgia.

I don't see how this is horrible for Georgia
Nah, no one here really cares... they're more unimpressed with Derek Dooley's record at La Tech in the WAC. Most are wishing him well due to the reverence in which they hold his father. Some think this is just Dooley's platform to jump to UGA when the Dawgs fire Richt

Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry

Poor boy, you're bound to die
This time tomorrow
Reckon where I'll be
Hadn't a-been for Grayson
I'd a-been in Tennessee

Why would UGA fire Richt? He epitomizes the word integrity.

Unfortunately, that doesn't always = wins, which is all that matter at that level.

You're from the west coast, love woman's sports and are obtaining a degree over the internet so this may be difficult for you to understand. Integrity doesn't help him at all. Richt is on the hot seat much like Les Miles is on the hot seat (and Les Miles has won a National Title). I guarantee you, if Richt doesn't win a SEC title and beat Florida/Tenn in the next two years, he is done.

I think Dooley will prove to be a damn good hire. One of the best young coaches in the country.
People laugh at his record at La Tech... but, that program was HORRIBLE when he got there. He took them to their first bowl game in 30 years.
It's going to take him some time, though... and not sure how patient UT fans will be. Look at his first 8 games next year:
09/04/10 vs. Tennessee-Martin Knoxville, Tenn. TBA
09/11/10 vs. Oregon Knoxville, Tenn. TBA
09/18/10 vs. Florida * Knoxville, Tenn. TBA
09/25/10 vs. UAB Knoxville, Tenn. TBA
10/02/10 at LSU * Baton Rouge, La. TBA
10/09/10 at Georgia * Athens, Ga. TBA
10/23/10 vs. Alabama * Knoxville, Tenn. TBA
10/30/10 at South Carolina * Columbia, S.C. TBA
Probably the toughest opening schedule in college football. He'll be doing very well if he can win 3 of those games.
Also, he's classy as hell.... something Tennessee really needs now to restore its image.
Watch his press conference if you haven't already:

I agree KY. Classy guy. Good young coach. I'm just not sure he is ready for that big of a stage. It sounds REALLY familar.

His recruits while he was at LSU:
2000- Chad Lavalais, Stephen Peterman and Corey Webster (future All-Americans in what was considered to be a makeshift class)
2001- Joseph Addai, Bennie Brazell, Michael Clayton, Travis Daniels, Marquise Hill, Rudy Niswanger, Marcus Spears, Andrew Whitworth, Ben Wilkerson (considered the foundation of the '03 NC team)
2002- Skyler Green and Kyle Williams (All-Americans)
2003- Matt Flynn, JaMarcus Russell, Dwayne Bowe, Craig Davis, and LaRon Landry (speaks for itself)

This hire didn't make a lot of sense to me.. you'd think Tennessee would have been aiming higher to please the fanbase. This is a risky hire, but it may pan out well for them.

Apparently the did Aim higher but everyone said "no." Dooley has the experience, he's going to a better school with more talent and a recruiting pipeline... hopefully they will give him a couple of years to get the ball rolling instead of having a knee jerk "we want championships now" attitude.

That's just it.. what's the fan base going to do when they have another mediocre year while this guy installs his system? That's why this coach is such a risk.

Yeah, I think that's the key... Tennessee fans will have to be patient.
Good thing is that they won't be installing a new system... Chaney is retained as offensive coordinator (and will be given more freedom calling plays than he had last year, I'm sure).
Defensive coordinator hasn't been announced yet. Kevin Steele from Clemson by way of Alabama has been rumored... but, it's been back and forth-- "he's coming", "he's staying", etc. Would be a damn good hire if they can get him.

Dooley is doing a damn good job recruiting in three weeks.
UT's recruiting class fell to around 20 after Kiffin jumped ship. He's kept a lot of the class together and been able to pick up some quality guys.
If Ambles, Rogers, Copeland, and Stone decide to sign with Tennessee tomorrow they could end up with a top 5 class.

I kinda doubt that Tennessee was planning on hiring an Air Force coach.

Perhaps integrity isn't everything, guys. But you better have it. Wins don't help a coach very much if he's continually getting the school on probation. Wins don't help very much if he has even the appearance of impropriety. Just ask the folk who lost their jobs at Texas Tech and South Florida. Wins sure didn't save them.

Integrity sure didn't save Tommy Tuberville whilst at Auburn. One bad season in the SEC and you could be gone, doesn't matter who you are or what you've done. Just look at Phillip Fulmer.

Fulmer had a decade of decline into mediocrity. Not just one year, imo.
And Richt is on the same path.

Agreed, the Fulmer reference was to tie in my initial Richt comment. Both have accolades within the SEC previously... but average seasons don't make people to happy down here.
