Tragedy struck St. Xavier high school and the local football community on Friday as news broke that senior Matt James, a Notre Dame-bound recruit, died after falling from a third story balcony of his Days Inn Motel on Front Beach Road at Panama City Beach, Fl during his first day of spring break...

Not really surprising, but alcohol was a factor in the accident, witnesses claimed he was "drunk and belligerent" at the time of the accident. A sad story for sure.

So why would his parents let a 17-year-old kid go on a trip to Panama City with other high schoolers? Call me conservative, but the risk seemingly outweighs the reward in that case. No way it's asking for death as it's a freak accident, but it seems like an error in judgment by the parents.

I'm guessing the fact that the ESPN article stated that there were six adult supposed chaperones on this trip of forty students gave them some measure of certainty that something like this wouldn't be allowed to happen. It was certainly naive, but I think that might be where they were coming from.
I'm sure the chaperones aren't feeling real good right now.

Tragic beyond words. You can speculate all day long about the parent's decision but they'll have to live with this the rest of their lives. If that isn't hell on earth then I don't know what is.
My thoughts and prayers go out to them.
