A University of Virginia men’s lacrosse player has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of a UVa women’s lacrosse player, according to Charlottesville police.
George Huguely, 22, a fourth-year student from Chevy Chase, Md., is in the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, according to a statement from police.
The victim has been identified as Yeardley Love, 22, a fourth-year student from Cockeysville, Md., according to police.
Officials haven’t determined a cause of death, but Love’s body, which was found at a 14th Street Northwest apartment, showed physical trauma, according to the statement.
Witnesses told police Huguely and Love had been in a relationship, according to authorities.

From April 2006 (re: Duke Lax case)
Huguely's father, George, Sr. said yesterday that he's had discussions with his son, who will play at University of Virginia next season, about staying out of situations that could be costly.
"Regardless of what winds up happening, you have to learn from this experience and take what you can from it," George Huguely Sr. said. "You always have to remember and can't let yourself be in a situation where something like this could happen."

Sounds like Jr. had a propensity for being near volatile situations. Sorry for Sr. and family.
EDIT: I just read the Post article. For some reason I was thinking the Duke case was more recent and perhaps the kid had transferred out of Duke. My mistake.

Sorry - my fault in the post. The kid was still in HS when the Duke case was going on. I just thought it was an interesting quote his father had in re: that case.

I remember playing against them in high school. We had a pretty damn good team (won regionals that year over the traditional powers Robinson/Langley, before there were States) and they didn't have much trouble with us. They've always been a lacrosse powerhouse.

Landon vs Georgetown Prep is a preview of more than a dozen DI players every year. But the surprise this year was from the Catholic boys down at Gonzaga...

The men and women's teams are havin' a meetin' tonight. Rumor is that both seasons will be cancelled, but apparently it's going to be up to the players.
Sad sad story.

As I posted in the other thread, I could see the women potentially giving up on their season, but the men need to reach down, make sure their nuts are still there, and get on the damn field.

You're correct, especially since the kid is still innocent. There's no reason to overreact like Duke did (the players in that scandal turned out innocent, right?). The rest of the team isn't charged with murder and it isn't fair to them.

Agreed.
The women lost a teammate - she's gone. Tough to go on right away after that.
The men may or may not have had a murderer on the team. Right now, he is just a suspect

Yeah the Durham County Prosecutor fabricated evidence and decided to make an example out of the Duke Lacrosse players. The school over reacted due to the media attention (because it was a race issue, media flooded the school) and the season was canceled and the coach was fired. Then it turned out the prosecutor was a lying asshole and was disbarred.
If the kid is guilty of sexual abuse and first degree murder, then I say cut his genitalia off.

As long as you didn't go to O'Connell or Paul VI, I think we're still cool. Granted I'm assuming you were in VA and not attending the D word or Good Council.

Thank you guys for filling in the gaps here. When I first saw this on one of those "bottom line" thingies, all they had was that a UVA LAX player was under arrest for murder. No mention of the victim being another UVA LAX player (on the "other" team). Based on that scant info, naturally, my brain jumped to the UNC punter situation.
Thanks for filling it in.

BS. The women lost a teammate, so you put on a patch/arm band/whatever and finish out the season. This is no reason to cancel the season for either team. If either team decides to cancel the season I would make damn sure that the players that voted to not play, NOT play the following years and get some that want to play.

No reason to overreact, but this is very different. In the Duke case it wasn't clear there was a crime. This one is pretty clear and from the sounds of it, this kid had a very bad temper and like to drink and do drugs.

We beat Laurel in football and lacrosse every year. And a huge brawl occured after every one of them. Basketball, not so much.
Private school, Laurel MD, let's see how long bandle takes to guess.
