Big Sky Track Tournament

Post by frinq »

Does anyone follow track? The Big Sky Track Tournament started today with the multi events. PSU won't do much as a team, since we don't have that many ahtletes - yet. We should have a few first places, however. And today Nick Trubachik stands in first place in the decathlon, with Vince Kinney in second. Nick will probably win this one and go on to the NCAA Regionals. What's up in other conferences?

Hey, Dback, glad to see someone following it. I don't follow it closely, but know that NAU has been tops for the last couple years and will be in the running this year. Sac State supposedly is the favorite. I know PSU will take the women's 100 meter, maybe also the 200 meter. We should place in a couple other spots. We're traditionally weak in the weights and discus - likely don't have the coaches for it. And the women always do better than the men. Almost certainly, because Oregon track is big - UO is always top ten in the country - and they recruit all of the best athletes.
I'm following this on the Big Sky site - they're slow reporting. :-(

I follow college track pretty closely. The Albany mens and women's teams both won the America East titles this year (again). This is the men's 6th outdoor title in a row. This is the women's 2nd in a row.

We don't have any real national standout men's individualists, but we do have some really strong relays (4x8 and Distance Medley). Hopefully the 4x8 makes some noise at the IC4A and East Regional in the next few weeks.

I really follow it for my nephew though, who is #2 decathalete in the nation at 7800+ points.

What happened in the vault? That's always been my favorite event, though my PR was only 9'6".

Dane, your nephew's 7800 is impressive, Olympic Trials-worthy PSU's Trubachik came in at 5380, worth 15th nationally right now. Since the top 22 go to the NCAA I doubt that number will hold up.

Yeah he's a sick athlete. He was the high school national champ in the vault at 17-8 as a senior. He's a definite Olympic hopeful for 2012 or 2016 for sure. The tough thing is he's stuck behind some phenomenal multi-eventers right now (Ashton Eaton at Oregon in the college level, but after that Trey Hardee and Brian Clay at the Elite level).

A football team's spring practice isn't as locked in stone as a league meet is (which is held hostage by the NCAAs). Football should have adjusted its schedule to accommodate track.

That's not intended to be anti-Kitty smack. I'd say the same thing if that tr@sh had been pulled at Sac. Track is very important to keeping people in shape for football and can provide another avenue to pursue after school is out should football not pan out. I don't care what the sport is or what school one is at: any coach who tries to pigeonhole his/her athletes is an ignoramus at best.

I'm gonna start with

So spring football doesn't get people in shape for football?

Spring ball went from 3/24 to 4/24 and track had its first meet on 4/2 and ended on 5/12. I don't know about Cali but there is a very small window in Bozeman weather to get spring ball in and in fact this year was the first in many many years not to have cancel any practices.

Wilson had knee surgery this spring and will be a RS soph. this fall. Those times are from his senior year in high school which he holds Montana state records in the 100 and 200. He turned down 2 PAC-10 offers to run track to play football for the Cats. He is very raw but the coaches and fans have great expectations. If football doesn't pan out, from what I understand, he has a scholly waiting for the track team. I also think he will be doing both by the time he is a junior or senior.

I was just meaning to say that a kid should be allowed to do both. I know there are few Herschels in the world, but to me a guy who's world class in both track and football (an RB/WR on the sprints or a OL/DL on the throws) would be a great asset to both. I understand about the tiny window of opportunity in Montana, but the league meet isn't all that long. He could have been excused for the time of the meet. Winning the league meet would have brought much glory to the institution and pats on the back from his football teammates.
