Did Texas, Oklahoma & A&M Blackmail Remaining Schools?

How scared were Kansas, Baylor and the rest of not having a conference home?

It's worth asking with the newest detail of the agreement to keep the conference intact...

The remaining schools have agreed to sign over their shares of Nebraska and Colorado's buyout money. According to reports both schools are to pay $20 million buyouts meaning each of these teams is giving up $4 million to keep Texas and the others in the conference, this comes on top of allowing Texas and the other three schools to make substantially more on the new television contract.

This reminds me of the bullyish older brother who may have the advantage right now, but in a few years, the little brothers are going to kick his ass.

The Big XII has delayed its divorce, thats all. This conference is still doomed.

I agree completely - Kansas was positively spooked that they would be left all alone (well, alone with K-State, Iowa St, and Baylor) that they had to do whatever it took to keep a major conference alive. And what it took was basically giving in to anything that Texas wanted.

I see this as the equivalent of the Big 12 playing monopoly amongst themselves, and Texas had most of the properties and had hotels galore built up. Kansas and the other sisters of the poor landed on one of those properties and had to pretty much give over all their cash. All that means is that the next time around the board, they'll land on one of Texas's spots again and it will all be over then. A conference setup like this isn't a longterm solution. Kansas better start doing its homework on where they want to go (Big East for b-ball only, maybe the Mountain West) for when Texas holds them over the coals again.

^I agree the other schools could and should make more money than giving it all to Texas and Oklahoma. I am surprised this really happened when you look at the money.

The other thing too in all of this is how the Big 12 has gotten weaker overally compared to the rest of the major conferences. If the Pac 10 picks up Utah and that market then the Pac 10 is instantly better off than the Big 12 and you have to like the markets they'll have to boost their network. The Big Ten got better as well and was already significantly ahead of the Big 12 to start. Adding Nebraska to that conference might be the biggest coup out of all of this.

You have to wonder, how does the Big 12 expect to start a new tv channel that will match what the Big Ten has done, when it took the Big Ten as long as it did to get onto cable systems where it did when they had a better product to start with?

Gannon: that has got to be the best description I've seen of this whole mess. How do they get away with that? This is the school bully taking the nerd's lunch money to the nth degree. It's completely unethical, IMO.

Well, for Kansas and the rest of them, to borrow a line from "An Officer and a Gentleman", Texas can do that to Kansas because Kansas "...has nowhere else to go...". Like I said, Kansas should get to work on figuring out where to land the next time Texas demands more.

Won't happen but as a condition of agreeing to that extortion, the agreement should be updated so that none of the schools giving up their share has to pay a buyout should they decide to leave the conference. That will make it easier for Kansas or Missouri to jump ship when they find greener pastures.
