Akron claims first-ever NCAA championship
Image

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The third time is the charm for the University of Akron. After two NCAA College Cup final defeats, the title has come at long last for the Zips and head coach Caleb Porter.

A goal by New England Revolution youth product Scott Caldwell was the difference as No. 3 Akron defeated top-ranked Louisville Cardinals 1-0 on Sunday to earn the college championship trophy.

In the 75th minute of play, Caldwell fired twice to beat Louisville ‘keeper Andre Bourdeax from close range. The midfielder’s first shot deflected off a Cardinals defender, but Caldwell pounced on the rebound and his second effort found the top of the net.

With just moments to play, the Cardinals failed to pull even, missing a pair of golden opportunities to tie the match.

First, Louisville forward Buck Tufty fired a shot that was saved by the Akron goalkeeper David Meves. Just seconds later, Aaron Horton – the last-minute hero for the Cardinals in their two previous matches – had a chance at an empty net, but defender Chad Barson cleared the shot off the line to preserve the Zips’ lead.

NCAA Best XI

NCAA BEST XI

FIRST-TEAM COLLEGE SOCCER BEST XI

David Bingham, GK, California
MLSsoccer.com's Goalkeeper of the Year is the obvious choice as a first-team member. The junior let in a few more goals than other top ‘keepers around the nation, but making 129 saves is quite an achievement.

Kofi Sarkodie, D, Akron
The argument can be made that Sarkodie didn’t do much defending this year. Akron’s style of play allowed the US youth national-team defender to spend as much, if not more, time in the opposition box than at right back. But his success is evidenced by eight goals and six assists on the year.

Andrew Wenger, D, Duke
This versatile defender is technically gifted and provides a big presence at the back. The sophomore started every game this season for the Blue Devils. Very composed on the ball, Wenger likes going forward and playing in a central midfield role as well.

A.J. Soares, D, California
The MLSsoccer.com Defender of the Year wasn't just a solid man-marker – he was a leader at the back, and spurred the Golden Bears to one of their best seasons in some time.

Michael Farfan, M, North Carolina
Injuries hampered his statistical output over the season, though without the attacking midfielder, the Tar Heels’ injury woes could have left them much worse off.

Matt Kassel, M, Maryland
One of Maryland’s most consistent players this year, Kassel’s nine goals and 11 assists were among the best on a dangerous Terrapins team. Provided a steady veteran presence and leadership that was crucial, despite coming up short in the quarterfinal against Michigan.

Anthony Ampaipitakwong, M, Akron
The Zips' senior captain was the engine of the Akron offense, making the right passes at the right times to start goal-scoring sequences. The diminutive playmaker finished with three goals and 10 assists on the year.

Ryan Kinne, M, Monmouth
An attacking midfielder/forward hybrid, Kinne led Monmouth with 10 goals on the year to drive the Hawks’ offense and an NSCAA top-25 ranking all season.

Darlington Nagbe, F, Akron
One of many attacking options for the Zips, Nagbe created more than he scored this year, grabbing seven goals while dishing out 13 assists. His speed, vision and finishing ability are a lethal combination.

Colin Rolfe, F, Louisville
Named Player of the Year on Tuesday, Rolfe’s work rate, scoring ability and evolution into a creator all played huge parts in Louisville’s unbeaten regular season.

Will Bruin, F, Indiana
Finishing third in the nation with 19 goals scored, the Big Ten Player of the Year was an excellent finisher in front of goal for the Hoosiers.

Akron's Nagbe wins Hermann Trophy
Image
Zips forward receives top college honor after historic season

The University of Akron’s Darlington Nagbe was recognized as the top player in the NCAA Division 1 on Friday, receiving the coveted Hermann Trophy award.

The Zips product topped fellow junior forwards Will Bruin from Indiana University and the University of Louisville’s Colin Rolfe to take home the prize.

Nagbe, who also can play in the midfield, helped Akron capture their first-ever NCAA title in 2010, topping Louisville in the College Cup Final. He scored seven goals and tallied 13 assists in 25 starts all season.

He becomes the second consecutive Akron player to win the award after current Sporting Kansas City and US national team striker Teal Bunbury received it last year.

The Hermann Trophy is handed out by the Missouri Athletic Club to the nation’s top male and female players in NCAA D-1 soccer. The winners are decided by votes from the coaches whose programs are members of the NSCAA.
