Now that he's got his 400th win, how will Joe Paterno hand over the reins at Penn State?

For option #4, assume that he's given a fake referee to yell at throughout the game. I forgot to add that part.

Number 1, methinks, and maybe not even then.
Isn't his kid next in line there?

Yep, and Joe doesn't really have much responsibility other than cheerleading and recruiting anyway.

He has 2-3 years max, and he will leave on his own once he starts going nuts.
His son will not be the next head coach at Penn State. Not a chance. The AD and President don't have faith in Jay, and they will not allow Joe to hand pick his successor. If Joe was allowed to choose Jay as his successor it would have already been announced.
The next head football coach at Penn State will be Tom Bradley, Greg Schiano, or Al Golden. Jay Paterno will be an assistant AD or call games for Penn State radio or whatever when he dad is gone.

No. JayPa will not be the next head coach at Penn State. That is a guarantee.

I can't believe you Southern folks want to give Stump the boot already.
