Temple's Al Golden Headed to The U

Coach Al Golden turned around Temple's football program, taking a cellar dweller and making it a Mid-American Conference contender.
Now he will get the chance at a higher-profile rebuilding job with the University of Miami.
Golden was offered the Hurricanes' job on Sunday, and the 41-year-old coach accepted. Temple acknowledged Golden's hiring in a news release last night. He will be officially introduced as coach in a news conference in Miami on Monday.
Golden replaces Randy Shannon, who was fired after a 7-5 finish this fall. Shannon had a 28-22 record in four seasons at his alma mater.
Miami and Golden came to an agreement at 4 p.m. Sunday on a five-year contract for at least $8 million, according to a source with knowledge of the negotiations. Golden was believed to be making about $550,000 at Temple.
"Al Golden did not just win games at Temple University, but he built a football program, and he did it the right way," said Bill Bradshaw, Temple's director of athletics "The turnaround was not only seen on the gridiron, but also in the classroom, with unprecedented academic success."

Miami.... may regret this. They need a sure homerun, and a guy like Al Golden may not be that homerun they're looking for.

Agreed...I'm not sure if this is still true but at one point this season Temple hadn't beaten a MAC team that finished with a winning conference record under Golden.

The Rutgers coach pissed his opportunity down his leg when he hit a home run a couple years ago and decided to stay at Rutgers. Golden probably doesn't wnat to make the same mistake.

2) living in Miami vs. living in Philly

I have followed Al Golden's career since his playing days at Red Bank Catholic. He has been a winner wherever he has been. Miami made a good hire.

the one thing Randy Shannon did right was run a clean program outside of Robert Marve, he just sucked at actual coaching.

RS would make a better team compliance official than a head coach...

It's not 1995 anymore. You realize since RS took over the Canes have had 1 arrest (Robert Marve) and he's no longer with the team. Also, I believe Miami led the FBS in APR last year. Even under Coker, aside from the brawl against FIU, I fail to see how your "class" comment applies to UM.
As for the hire, it is not the home run that most of us were hoping for, but at least it wasn't Marc Trestman. I'm going to reserve judgement until I see how the team performs under his leadership.

Only teams to graduate more players in his 4 years were Navy and Air Force. And Marve was/is a douche, should have never left Tampa.

When people think of Miami, they think of classless thuggery. Sorry if it hurts your feelings. Hell, ESPN did a two hour special celebrating it several months ago. I'm just glad Penn State kicked their asses and took the trophy in '86.

That's a pretty broad statement, an uninformed one as well. Like I said, it's not 1986, or hell, 1995. Maybe when you think of Miami, you think of classless thuggery. But people who actually follow college football beyond the realms of their own teams, know that Miami hasn't been thug U since Butch Davis took over, and the probation years.

Agreed. It takes a long time to erase all that history. Problem is, you still have guys like Ray Lewis and all the other Miami thugs on TV every week reminding people of that element.

Btw, I was down that way earlier this year and swung by the campus in Coral Gables. It's small, but very nice. The chicks weren't bad either.

Doesn't appear to be a great hire. I thought for sure they'd seriously go after Randy Edsall.

I was seriously underwhelmed by what was reported to be the final 3: Edsall, Golden, Marc Trestman. Really...that's the best we could do?
Call me crazy, but I'd take a flyer on Mike Leach.

That's what I kept saying when we weren't sure if Wulff was going to get another year up here. Take a chance on Leach and don't give him any keys to the equipment closets.

On the other hand, Golden may be an out of the park home run. Temple was dreadful when he took over and he made them respectable. Not a small accomplishment considering the state Temple was in a few years ago; booted from the Big East and there were a lot of people that wanted them to drop football. Thanks in large part to Golden you don't hear that talk anymore.
We'll see how this plays out, but I like it for Miami and hate it for Temple.
