MSU runner dominates mile sets record

Casey's time on Friday was a Big Sky Conference record, eclipsing Weber State's Jeremy Tolman's 3:59.99, set at the NCAA Championships in 2001 at sea level. The conference does not recognize altitude-adjusted times for its record book.

Casey's adjusted time of 3:54.59 is the fastest in the world this year, according to MSU head coach Dale Kennedy, although the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) also doesn't recognize altitude-adjusted times.

Still, his feat is considered one of the best in the history of the sport in Montana.

"It was the all-time greatest performance that I've ever been associated with," said Kennedy, currently in his 30th year at the school. "I know this will be a shocker when the big-time schools look at that."

Altitude is considered an assisting factor (and thus noted) for distances up to 400 meters. If anything, the mile is negatively impacted by altitude. 3:54.59 is fast anywhere. Even more impressive at altitude. :notworthy:
