Not surprised, what market do they offer? Morgantown? :? Also they don't really fit into either conference geographically.

but here's a couple thoughts I have on this:

West Virginia offers a good team for the SEC football, they've been competitive with the SEC everytime they've played recently. Their basketball team would improve the strength of the SEC and bring more parity in the ACC. So they're rejected but I think that will bring more stability to the Big East/Big 12 merger if it happens. Cincinnati, West Virginia, and TCU have all been to a BCS bowl in the last 4 years. USF is close. Bring in the Big 12 schools and you have a 2 tier conference with a lot of upside in the top 4 teams and (IMO) Kansas State and Missouri (if Missouri stays). Not to mention those teams would have a bigger, more talented recruiting crop with Texas and South Florida still. I think that conference would keep a BCS bid. They could also do themselves a big favor by inviting SMU, Houston, East Carolina, or Tulsa as well

Also interesting is that the ACC has not rejected UConn or Rutgers as of yet.

The ACC just added Pitt. Pitt and WVU are about an hour and a half apart, that's why they call it the back yard brawl.

WVU is also closer to just about every ACC school than Syracuse.

Geography had nothing to do with this.

I just found this online:

Pete Thamel of the New York Times (who broke the 'Cuse and Pitt talking to ACC story) says WVU hasn't been rejected, but that they're only an option if the SEC goes to 16.

meaning they're definitely looking at 2 other teams, meaning if the Pac 12 goes to 16 so will the SEC

I've been doing a lot of reading on various online locations. The sense I get is that everyone is waiting for Texas and Notre Dame to decide. The ACC won't add UConn and Rutgers until they know for sure that Texas and ND are out of the question.

We'll be playing this waiting/guessing game until those two schools land somewhere.

ND has always wanted to stay independent, but they may be forced to join a super conference if they all go to 16.

There is also the possibility that the SEC could still poach an ACC school, if the SEC is willing to help pay the $20 million buy out. There are a lot of rumors about FSU leaving the ACC for the SEC.

if FSU gets the offer (which I doubt but am holding out hope for) that 20 mil will not be a problem. It's funny FSU makes progress in bball and the league is adding stronger bball teams.

the basketball powerhouses want UConn... gotta imagine they will end up granting their wanting... Also another nothern team eases the travel costs for BC, Pitt and Syracuse.

whats your belief then if they did in fact get rejected?

The ACC knows who they want as #15 and 16 and West Virginia isnt one of them. Thats what it comes down to.

because they have other schools they want. West Virginia offers them nothing other Big East teams dont and the next move wont happen until Texas makes a decision one way or the other about whether they want a relationship with the ACC. If Texas wants in, than Texas and Texas Tech likely take #15 and 16.

I think the ACC is looking at the end of its expansion as either Texas & Texas Tech or Rutgers and UConn. West Virginia simply isnt in their plans.

I hope Texas and Texas Tech decide to go to the Pac-12. That way it opens the door up for UConn and Rutgers.

One's ignorant status on facebook earlier tonight....

"If UConn leaves the Big East, I will cry...."

Why?! The Big East will do nothing but suck the life out of the UConn athletic program if the Huskies decide to stay. :ohno: The Fiesta Bowl will be the first and last BCS bowl game they will ever be invited to.

all UConn fans should be hoping for an ACC slot... its the place to be for an eastern conference team, especially one who excels at basketball.

not only basketball but all sports....soccer (UNC currently ranked #1 in men's soccer), field hockey (maryland defending national champs), baseball (regular college world series participants).

Why?! Current football members will only see the life sucked out of their athletic programs.

Money. Morgantown is not attactive enough of a market.

Everything you are seeing here is about money. It's not about how good a school is and it is not about geography.

It means nothing. Pledges are meaningless. They have to say this to try and make their programs look more attractive and less desperate. But they are desperate. Not one of the remaining Big East schools would turn down an offer from the ACC or Big 10.

UConn is a great fit both academically and athletically, but they don't have an attractive market (in other words, they don't bring money to the table). I think the ACC would like to have them, but they are not at the top of the list. UConn will likely have to wait until the ACC knows for sure what ND and Texas are doing.

If the SEC poaches an ACC school I think you will see either UConn or Rutgers get an invite to the ACC immediately. I hope it's UConn.

Thats exactly what I meant when I brought up geography.
