Local girl, Elena Delle Donne, the 2008 consensus Naismith National High School Basketball Player of the Year, gets recruited to UConn. Stays a couple days up there, leaves the school and quits basketball entirely. Ends up playing on the UD volleyball team and named to the CAA All-Rookie Volleyball team.
Our b-ball coach didn't go after her...didn't initiate contact, but let her shoot baskets alone after practice.
EDD's sister is also blind and deaf and suffers from autism and cerebral palsy.
EDD gets her drive back, joins the Hens and makes the CAA Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year in her first season. She made first team last season too, but was limited last year (missed 12 games) by some mysterious ailments and back pain. Doctors did tests, find issue, and EDD recovers and leads the 2011 USA Basketball Team for the World University Games Gold medal this past summer leading the team in points, rebounds and assists.
Hard not to like about that story.

Stop posting this stuff. The ODU people were telling me we were only a football school.

I can't get into women's hoops - I've tried to watch it but I just can't.
That being said Delle Donne is a monster for UD - from what I understand she'll be a 1st team All-American this year & almost single handedly beat the top Big Ten team last night.
Would be good to see UD win another conference championship in a different sport.
UD - the new flagship of the CAA.

Well some Delaware fans say themselves that they are a football school, just FYI.

Here we go again. Henvy noted. ODU women's bball used to be the gold standard... not so much anymore.

Well anyone half in the know, knows what supposedly happened with that story. Thank you Tina Charles.

actually not really and I'm a UConn fan as well. ...at least I thought I was.
All I know is that the short time when EDD was at UConn (if she even actually ever attended) she really didn't have the passion to play the sport anymore and it did seem like she had a lot of expectations as an incoming freshman. It happens to a lot of athletes when playing a sport for too long it can eventually lead to burning out.
And don't worry ODU Women's hoops will return to its gold standard. It's gonna take a while but a lot of ODU Lady Monarch fans are confident. As good as Wendy Larry was as ODU's coach, it was pretty obvious she got complacent those last couple years. How they went from 17-straight CAA Championships and a Sweet 16 appearance in that last year to complete mediocrity is very surprising. I think expecting them to return to national prominence is beyond highly unlikely but there is no excuse for them to not be the class of the CAA anymore.
Also I forgot to mention it ealier, regardless if Delaware fans care or don't care about Delaware Women's Hoops, congrats on defeating Penn State.

Elena Delle Donne has vaulted the Delaware basketball program to new heights.
The 6-foot-5 star led the Blue Hens to their first Top 25 ranking, entering The Associated Press poll Monday at No. 24. They will face Princeton on Thursday in their first game as a ranked team.
