Big Ten-Pac-12 will team up and compete

The Pac-12 and Big Ten have agreed to a long-term interconference scheduling "collaboration" that, if successful, could have far-reaching ramifications for both of their memberships.

Likely beginning as early as next year, the Pac-12 and Big Ten are going to significantly reconfigure their future football, basketball and Olympic sports schedules to feature games between their combined 24 member schools.

The conferences will announce their plans later Wednesday.

Accomplishes some of that (National conference) with out the conference merge headaches, and keeps the autobids :)

Then the SEC and ACC will announce something similar, leaving the Big 12 out in the cold once again.

Possibly - or ACC-Big 12.

Big 10- Pac 12 have long association via Rose Bowl - no other pair of conferences has that.

This also stretches from California to Pennslyvania - almost coast to coast, and with good schools, not the crap the Big East has.

Boring!

I'd MUCH rather see Big Sky vs. Big South...or Big Sky vs. CAA...or Big Sky vs. SoCon... or Big Sky vs. SLC....

This is an absolutely brilliant move, and I would expect the other BCS conferences to do something similar. They finally figured out they can make tons more money by scheduling other top notch programs in OOC games instead of throwing away a game on a MAC or WAC type opponent. This should definitely increase the gap between the haves and have-nots.

Yup.

Will see if this squeezes the MAC/WAC games, or the FCS games. Since FCS games are cheaper (and a say, Arizona-NAU game is more interesting to the locals than an Arizona-Texas State game), I think the WAC/MAC games will be the first to go.

The BCS schools can schedule all of their MAC/WAC or FCS games at home. These games would likely be scheduled one home, one away so the school would lose revenue. The increased exposure and TV revenue would offset that some. I could see them scheduling one OOC football game/year with a school from the partner conference but the lost revenue and increased chances of a loss make it unlikely they would schedule more. Money rules.

It would make sense geographically. Nebraska and Colorado share a border. One conference, from sea to shining sea.

The truth is that the Pac-12 and Big Ten already schedule each other quite a bit, especially in the Olympic sports.

The Big Ten intends to reduce the number of conference football games from 9 to 8 in 2017 to accommodate this agreement. Football teams from the two conferences will still be able to schedule the WAC, MAC and FCS cream-puffs.
