The Clowney (S Car) hit on the Michigan running back with about 8 min left in the game?

Holyfuck! :notworthy:

Catch it on SportsCenter if you missed it. Totally worth it.

Edit: Here's a link. Not sure how long it'll stay up before the copyright police swoop in.

The clown football was the play before that. The chain gang came out, the sticks clearly extended about two inches in front of the tip of the ball, and the ump called it a first down for Mich. Spurrier was standing right next to the guy and went ballistic.

Another clown football play earlier, a USC defender was speared right in the nuts by the UM running back. In fact, that might have been the same two guys from the hit.

Did the Michigan player have possession of the ball at the time of the hit (which dislodged his helmet)?
If so, shouldn't the play be immediately blown dead (and thus no fumble)?

He'll be the top pick in the draft - April 2014.

Ball and Clowney arrived at the same time. I honestly thought he killed the RB. That one will be replayed over and over through the years.

the o-line had no chance, all you saw was helmet, dreads, and the ball flying

Most of the "experts" believe he would be the #1 overall pick this year if he were eligible.

I watched a little bit of bowl games this past weekend. That short by two inches first down was just as good as that missed field goal field goal in the NCState- Vandy game. WTF is wrong with refs!?!

A fumbled or muffed handoff is not a dead ball.

Also Clowney is not human. I think he doesn't even expend full effort on most plays. If he did he could do something like that more often.

A fumbled or muffed handoff is not a dead ball.
I was just wondering about if the rule about "the play is immediately blown dead when the ballcarrier loses his helmet" would be applied. Though if he never really had posession of the ball, prior to the hit, then he isn't the ballcarrier.

If the ballcarrier was still running with the ball it would've been blown dead. As you note if he doesn't have possession of the ball the play continues. I don't think the prior possession matters, and the the RB was seperated from the ball and his helmet at the same time.

He went through the line almost untouched and thus had a lot of momentum when he hit the running back. Not a real showcase of football skills by Clowney but poor blocking by Michigan. I'm not impressed, but I guess I'm one of those guys that doesn't watch football for the big hits.

He beat his block block by coming off the line so fast. The LT, who is a potential 1st round draft choice by the way, didn't come close to him on that reach block. Secondly he arrived at the ball carrier incredibly quick. Virtually nobody, even when completely unblocked, has the quickness and acceleration to meet a back at the point where he the handoff is being made. The hit itself was gravy, but it was an outstanding footbal playt by a freak athlete.

He reacted to the snap a split second faster than the other linemen, but he didn't get out of his stance any faster than they did. It was just blown assignment by that tackle.

The block was missed because Clowney made a great play due to his tremendous athletic ability.
