Oregon coach Chip Kelly has decided to turn down a chance to go to the NFL and instead will return to the Ducks, according to league sources.
Kelly was intrigued with the Philadelphia Eagles' head coaching job but decided he wasn't comfortable leaving the college game.
The Cleveland Browns are the only other NFL team known to have interviewed Kelly. The two sides met last week but the Browns decided to reboot their coach search after leaving Arizona late Sunday morning without landing Kelly, sources said.
Hensley: Browns Look Bad
There's no guarantee that Chip Kelly would be a success in the NFL, but missing out on hiring him is a major setback for the Browns, who played all of their chips on the Oregon coach and lost, Jamison Hensley writes. Blog
The Eagles are the only other NFL team known to have interviewed Kelly.
Philadelphia took its coaching search committee to Denver to interview Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy on Sunday after a lengthy meeting with Kelly on Saturday night in Arizona.
Kelly has built the Ducks into a national power. Oregon has gone 46-7 in the last four years and made four consecutive BCS bowl games. Kelly runs a high-octane, fast-breaking offense, and elements of his schemes are already being used by New England and Washington.
Kelly may face NCAA sanctions in his return to Oregon as the school is being investigated for recruiting violations.

This is perhaps the most puzzling part of this. Yes, there are other things you have to worry about the NFL that are out of your control, but not having to deal with recruiting at all has to be a HUGE weight lifted off the shoulder of a coach.

Kelly probably looked at the rosters of the Browns & Eagles and the opponents in their divisions and thought better of it.

Well, with the power he was probably going to demand (i.e. GM), one could argue that he STILL had recruiting issues, just from a different context, and with fewer ticky-tack rules like when and how often one can text a player. Meeting with parents is also likely eliminated at the pro level. But you still have to find a way to convince a guy that your team is right for him.
But then there are the negatives, too. Instead of a standard "contract" of tuition, books and fees, and room and board, you have varying contracts with weird clauses, a salary cap under which you have to fit EVERYONE, managing fines, etc.
Of course, at the college level, you have compliance officers who do their best to keep you in line. For a combined HC/GM at the pro level, you don't have that.
Overall, I would NOT want to be coach AND GM. Many find that those are two full-time jobs, and that mixing them isn't worth the effort. Maybe that's what he decided.

That's fairly $imple in the NFL.

If you think that's the only variable in the NFL, 89, you're VERY naive. Some take a hometown discount, others won't go to certain places (in the past, Green Bay was one of those places, considered the "Siberia" of football), won't play for certain coaches, or don't want to hang with certain players. Some organizations have a rep of mistreating players, so those will be avoided by all except those drafted or traded.
It's a whole lot more complicated than just $$....

No its not. There are very few rare exceptions of players who already have more money than god that don't make decisions based on money, but by and large the only thing that matters in free agency is money.

We're talking about a coach here, doofus, not a player. Players have a much shorter window in which they can make piles of cash. If Kelly's only concern is money, why would he decide to stay with a program that's facing potential NCAA sanctions?

Who cares about money? The real story is that one of the 10 best coaches in football today is staying in college where he belongs.

Dog killer could be released by the first week of Feb. Eagles don't owe him a dime if so.

Welp, shit...
Wouldn't surprise me if he's pulling a Carroll. Might have found out a bunch of NCAA shit is gonna fall on Oregon, or just might, and wants out.
Best of luck to him.

Truth be told, +1 on that. The guy did an amazing job and turned a pretty mediocre program into a national powerhouse.
