Hornet Softball stung the opposition enough this week to nail down BOTH Big Sky Conference weekly awards.
First, Caitlin Brooks was named Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season because of her performance in Sac State's 4-1 weekend at Cal Poly's Mustang Classic. This marks the fourth time in the first five weeks of the season that a Hornet is Big Sky Pitcher of the Week. Brooks threw two complete games at the tournament, going 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA. She gave up a total of six hits and one unearned run in 14.0 innings. Rutgers and CP hit a combined .125 off Brooks, including a whopping ONE extra-base hit. On the year, Brooks has NOT been relieved, and has posted a 7-1 record with a 1.35 ERA. She's given up just 38 hits in 62.0 innings, resulting in an opposing batting average of just .174.
The Big Sky's Player of the Week is Paige Martin. In five games last weekend, Martin hit .500, including a double, two triples, and four RBI. She posted a .778 slugging percentage and .550 on-base percentage. Three of those games were multiple-hit specials for Martin. She only took the collar once. Martin was particularly impressive with RISP, with runners on base, and with two out. She whiffed just twice in 18 official ABs, and played a perfect right field. Martin is batting .383 overall, with a .448 on-base percentage. Her collar against CP snapped a 13-game on-base streak.
The Hornets (12-6) next play at their own Capital Classic Fri-Sun at Shea Stadium.

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.
