The Liberty Women's Field Hockey Team (17-4) defeated #10 Stanford 2-1 in Lynchburg on Saturday to win the NorPac Conference Championship! The win was the Flames' 12th in a row, and was made possible by Friday's 6-0 win over UC Davis.
Next up is a Wednesday trip to Newark to face #17 Delaware in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at 2 PM. The winner gets the dubious distinction of a trip to Chapel Hill, NC, to face National #3 seed North Carolina.

Why in the fuck is Liberty in the NorPac Conference?

How the hell does Liberty wind up in the same conference as Stanford in any sport? By distance, that has to be the biggest conference (except for any conference with Hawaii or Alaska in it)

Why the [bleep] were Boise and SDSU in the Big East? Why the [bleep] are Mizzou and TX A&M in the SEC?
Seriously, though, why not ask why the [bleep] App State, Longwood, and Radford are in the NorPac? It's like the Pioneer Football Conference, the Sun Belt, and the lamentable Great West Conference that included Houston Baptist and NJIT; a group of wide-spread teams banding together to play sports. There aren't that many schools playing field hockey, so you go where there's a group willing to take you....

No one asked about those teams.
If someone had posted that Appy was a member of Norpac in Women's Field Hockey, there would have been the same reaction.
Boise and SDSU were bad ideas - they came to their senses.
TAMU and MO are in the Southeastern US.
All you needed to say was that there are only four teams in the West that play DI field hockey: UC-D, Cal, Stanford and Cal Wesleyan. As the southern teams were adding the sport, they needed a place to call home. So an eastern division was formed, consisting of Lynchburg Baptist, Watauga Academy, Davidson College, Farmville Female College, and State Normal College for Women.
See, how nice that is?

I'll grant all of that, Jon, except for Mizzou and TAMU being in the "Southeast." They're significantly West of the Southeast. Not as bad as Boise in the Big East, I'll grant, but certainly not Southeast....

Either on paper or in the sand.

You can't compare football, which can make money, to a sport like field hockey, which loses money.

That might depend on the school, it's location, and how much they actually spend. They probably spend very little in terms of coaching salary, recruiting, facilities, and scholarships. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the expense were in the area of travel. That can be controlled to some degree with creative scheduling....

Who are you responding to? You should try the quote function, that's what it's for.
If you are responding to me, it's does not depend on the school. Field hockey does not make money. Even if you scheduled all home games and filled a roster with non-scholarship players you would lose money. Football can and does make money, sometimes enough money to make it worthwhile for a west team to consider joining an eastern conference.
You still haven't explained why Liberty and Stanford are in the same conference. I'm sure that there is a reason.

One would think that would be obvious. They're in a sport-specific conference together because their main conferences choose not to sponsor that minor sport due to a lack of conference participation.
It's the same way for UOP and Cal/Stanford for various sports in the MPSF (where UOP is #1 in the country for the first time EVER in men's water polo). Sac has returned to the MPSF in women's gymnastics now that the WAC has imploded, but Cal and Stanford are not there because the Pac-12 has enough participating schools to sponsor THAT sport.
That's why these special conferences exist. Heck, the move of UOP to the WCC was probably what killed the PCSC; that gave the WCC enough teams to sponsor softball, so they pulled all their participating schools out of there, which pretty much forced the Big Sky to follow suit....

They are 3000 miles apart. Liberty/Stanford can't find a league that is closer to home? Wouldn't playing as an independent be a better option? ODU joined the Big East for field hockey, I'm surprised that Liberty didn't do the same.
