Re: Alabama vs. Clemson
Yep, pretty entertaining. Best title game I can remember since USC/Texas.

Lane is proof that just because you're a failure as a HC doesn't mean you can't coach.Ibanez wrote:FIFYdbackjon wrote:Kiffin is now schooling Sweeney

He is an offensive genius unlike nearly anyone else in an era of a lot of great offensive minds. Put him in charge and he'll burn the house down in a few seconds. Ask him to simply look over a specific room of the house and that room will be fucking perfect.

He's also unbelievably lucky.
The talent he had while OC at USC and now Alabama is absolutely unreal.

Look at this photo of Derrick Henry and Mark Ingram....
And, they have a 6'2 240 4.4 40 freshman to take over at RB next year. Just unreal.

Re: Alabama vs. Clemson
Yeah, Saban wins by out-recruiting everyone else...his LSU and Bama teams produce more NFL draftees than anyone. Which is why he was an NFL coach for a short period. Not going to get that talent advantage in the NFL.Skjellyfetti wrote:He's also unbelievably lucky.

I'd argue Art Briles is a much better offensive coach than Kiffin.

Looks like the random CS.com poll got it right.
I wonder how NDSU would fare against Bama.

Huh? Offensive genius? Unlike nearly anyone else? Come on, Lane's a very good coach, but like the other poster said, there's a lot of guys who would look good with the same talent he's had when he's been successful. He's a very good coach, but he's not some visionary or something.clenz wrote:Lane is proof that just because you're a failure as a HC doesn't mean you can't coach.Ibanez wrote:

NDSU's strength would go directly against Alabama's strength. Ain't nobody gonna out Alabama Alabama.Ivytalk wrote:Looks like the random CS.com poll got it right.

It'll be interesting to see what their defense looks like next year with Smart gone. Even though they won, they struggled to contain yet another highly mobile QB.

Alabama is a NFL factory like no other team in college football. Nobody in the NCAA is going to line up in a Pro Set and stay on the same field with them.

Saban is a defensive guy. Saban and Jeremy Pruitt... probably means that they don't miss much of a beat, imo.Grizalltheway wrote:It'll be interesting to see what their defense looks like next year with Smart gone. Even though they won, they struggled to contain yet another highly mobile QB.
And, kinda like the above about calling offensive plays... when you have the talent to get 38 sacks only rushing 4 guys... makes it hard for a defensive coordinator to fail.

Re: Alabama vs. Clemson
I thought I'd already posted this and if I did and missed it I apologize. But...
What really disappointed me about that game is that Clemson clearly was physically capable of beating Alabama but they made two huge mental errors on defense that gave Alabama two cheap touchdowns. I'm talking about the two totally blown coverages on defense where Alabama got a 53 yard TD pass and a 51 yard TD pass. In each case the same Alabama receiver just ran straight down the field and nobody picked him up. That's not getting beat because the other team is physically beating you. It's getting beat because somebody blew an assignment.
So now we have to listen for another year about how great Alabama is.

Re: Alabama vs. Clemson
I don't know if the NFL factory like no other team in college football thing is correct. As of now if you go to http://espn.go.com/nfl/college" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; there are 47 LSU players on NFL rosters and 43 from Alabama. And Nic Saban has been gone from LSU for 11 years so most of those players were not at LSU when Saban was there. I think I heard somebody on the radio last week say 2 are from the LSU Saban eraAs did LSU and UGA.
Alabama is a NFL factory like no other team in college football. Nobody in the NCAA is going to line up in a Pro Set and stay on the same field with them.
LSU could line up in the pro set and stay with them if they had a quarterback. They've got comparable overall talent but for the past few years they haven't had the talent at that one very key position.
Also Ohio State may have the best draft of any college football program in history since the NFL went to the 7 round draft this year. This year's Ohio State team may have actually had MORE NFL talent than this year's Alabama team did. But, of course, they would not have lined up in in a pro set if they'd played Alabama anyway. They'd have spread them out as is Urban Meyer's wont.

Re: Alabama vs. Clemson
You know I was thinking about it kind of breaking it down in my head and I think Leonard Fournette is a better running back than Derrick Henry. I also think LSU had a better #2 back in Darius Guice. I think LSU's receivers were probably better than Alabama's just in terms of raw talent. Like as good as Calvin Ridley was for Alabama this year I think when it comes to NFL talent evaluation the NFL is going to have a higher regard for LSU's Malachi Dupre. The problem for LSU is that they didn't or couldn't fully utilize him and the other receivers. They didn't have a quarterback.
I think LSU had a better offensive line than Alabama did this past year. I'd give Alabama the edge on the defensive line, especially when depth is considered. But I"d say it was a wash at linebacker and LSU probably had better defensive backs.
It's just that quarterback is really, really important position and when LSU played somebody that could stack the line of scrimmage and stop their running game they were screwed. Most teams they played couldn't stop their running game even when they DID stack the line of scrimmage. But a few teams, including Alabama, could do it. And as Alabama showed in the two playoff games they could throw the ball effectively if they had to. LSU couldn't.

Except those two blown coverages that gave Alabama two cheap touchdowns really sucked. Also kind of sucked to give up that kickoff return. But not as much.Ibanez wrote:FIFYdbackjon wrote:Kiffin is now schooling Sweeney

Nah. It's just like the thing where you make a fish look bigger in a photo by holding out away from your body a little. The more you hold it out, the bigger you make it look. Some kind of artifact of perspective in photography, I think.
