Wait, you mean UMass used to win football games?

Is that true, Colonel Hogan?

Yea...we won a championship...even have an undefeated record against Montana... :)

I was a sophomore that year...and went to one of the local bars to watch the game...

ABC (if I remember correctly) broadcast the game...

I don’t remember who did the PBP, but they hired recently retired Texas coach Darryl Royal to do the color...

He could not say the word Massachusetts...it came out Mass-a-two-shits...

We were screaming at the TV throughout the game...

When he could have said “The Minuteman Defense blew that play...” he said “the Mass-a-two-shits defense...”

He didn’t pronounce the state’s name correctly once that afternoon...

Only 41 I-AA teams in the inaugural season. Five conferences (Big Sky, MEAC, Ohio Valley, SWAC, and Yankee) plus seven independent schools. FAMU's conference, the SIAC, was still a D2 conference, but FAMU received DI-AA classification on Sept 1 and got the at-large bid.

Four team playoff. UMass smoked #1 Nevada in the semis 44-21!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!

And they have not been that close since obviously but they are trying to make themselves a power again in the MEAC via their passing attack which at one time was one of the best in FCS.

Florida A&M was very close in the late '90s with their pass happy offense called THE GULF COAST OFFENSE.

They had one really good year, 1999, where they reached the national semis. But that was the year of one of the best Georgia Southern teams (GSU blew the doors off of Youngstown in the finals that year) so I don't think anyone was really all that close that year.

They had other good seasons '98 '00 '01 due to that pass happy scheme. The team that they had the most success against in the playoffs was Troy St.

Well, good MEAC seasons, but not much in the playoffs. They beat a 3 loss Troy St team in the '98 playoffs before bowing out the next round, they didn't even score a point in the '00 playoffs, getting shutout 27-0 (awesome offense there) to a WKU that lost the next round, and they gave up a bazillion points in their first round exit in '01.

That loss to Western Kentucky in my opinion was due to the non use of bigger WRs they had two WR over 6'0 but they were never used properly in that pass happy scheme Charles Allen 6'4 214 and Marcos Junious 6'3 210 these guys had the obvious size to play at the next level.
