Dumb. Sounds like Title IX problems. They would have been better off getting a schollie-for-schollie match by starting women's football....

Has nothing to do with Title IX. Everything to do with the Financial problems caused by Covid-19

They aren't the first to cut sports this off-season, won't be the last.

Three sports are cut, all of them men's. Men's tennis (which most of the Sun Belt plays in) was cut while women's field hockey (competes in the MAC) was kept. Hard to say Title IX doesn't play a role in which sports aren't cut.

While I agree with Pwns here, Jon's COVID argument DOES have SOME merit. But, as was mentioned before in another thread, SUSPENDING a sport due to COVID is one thing; outright CUTTING a sport due to COVID is absolutely stupid. Let it go one season, then bring it back the next when revenue picks up....

Revenue from what?

App State sponsored 20 sports, the most of any Sun Belt school. Even with the cuts, only only school (CCU) sponsors more sports than App State.

GSU, ULM, USA also sponsor 17, while Ga State, Ark State, ULL, Troy and Texas State sponsor the minimum for FBS of 16

App has gone all in on Football - at the expense of other sports.

Every other one is a big anchor around football’s neck. Same as every other school. And you’re correct: this is only the tip of the iceberg in sports elimination, caused by the ridiculous COVID Wuhan Chinese Virus.

That's fine if a school wants to go all in on Football. Just don't blame Title IX or anything else other than all resources are being allocated to Football.

Lots of sports getting the axe around the country. I'm sure the Chinese Flu and lack of revenue (also soon to be state budget cuts) is a significant cause, but so many makes me think a lot of AD's were already considering making these cuts. The Chinese Flu gives them the perfect cover story.

I didn't know App had indoor track and field. A shame about soccer in a way though. Even though I don't really care about the game, App was something of a power back in the late '70's and early '80's. A coach had good recruiting skills in Africa and landed some really talented players, including Thompson Usiyan from Nigeria, who I believe still holds the NCAA career scoring record.

Said it in another thread, most of these sports go unnoticed at their own schools anyway, so is it really that big of a deal to not have these sports? Even an App poster on this thread was unaware of his own school having one of these sports. I feel for the kids currently in these sports at these schools, as they are the only ones really impacted by this, but in the bigger picture colleges shouldn't be beholden to have these sports just to have these sports. No one watches these sports, very few are aware they exist before they get cut, so why have them in the first place.

Revenue from what?
Revenue from student fees and attendance at other sporting events and other things that use athletic venues....

App should cut basketball too. :ohno:

I feel bad for those who were recruited and find themselves in this situation, but not every sport makes money to include football at many schools.

Yeah, seems kind of frivolous to me. I'm pretty sure I didn't help fund it, but if my "student fees" went toward subsidizing that I'd be a little pissed.

There's no way the school or athletics department paid for that.

It was a donor and a relationship with Joe Gibbs.

Gillen is an excellent athletic director. I'm sure this decision sucked, but it had to be made. Lol at anyone who thinks he was blowing money on NASCAR while giving programs the axe.
