HERstory is made!

Vanderbilt was having COVID-related staffing issues amongst their kicking specialist, so they called in Sarah Fuller, the goalie from their soccer team that won the SEC Championship. Too bad their offense was too inept to give her any scoring opportunities. She DID get in a decent squib kickoff to open the second half, though. Should have sent her in to run a fake punt....

Just checked. Vandy does NOT, in fact field a men's soccer team. They only field six male sports: football, tennis, hoops, cross country, golf, and baseball. (Why cross country without track, I have no clue.) On the women's side, they have hoops, cross country, track, lacrosse, swimming, golf, soccer, tennis, and bowling. Yes, freaking BOWLING. I suppose there are Title IX issues there....

I'm sorry, but that was Shannon Faulkner-level look-at-me lame. There are plenty of competent girl kickers rising from the high school football ranks that could've sent that kickoff to the goal line (and then adsorb the decleating block that would be sure to come). And if you're going to squib kick it why not just go with the onside kick and have her get a chance at a real special teams accomplishment?

Where some see a watershed moment for women, I see a farce of a team that had to go to the women's soccer team in order to do a kickoff.

Vanderbuilt is obviously sexist assuming this is the reason they fired their coach.
oh wait 0-8

There HAD to be a more capable girl at the school. That is if Vandy was bound and determined to have it be a female.
Any dopey guy who played ANY sport in high school or middle school could have learned in a week to kick the ball to the goal line.
She didn't even have a nice ass.

That’s disgusting, Andy!

I've seen better kicks at peewee flag football. That was awful.

This. If I was going to make history, i'm not wasting it on a pooch kick. That was lackluster.

Obviously she knows nothing of football. Her eyes should have welled with tears because of the ugly reality that women can't play football at a high level.

Only two SEC schools play men's soccer: South Carolina and Kentucky. And they both play in CUSA.

That's your opinion not fact or reality. I know something about football and something about soccer and believe that a woman could definitely be a field goal kicker at a high level. Maybe it's your opinion that's ugly.

I guess she got bossy with the team during a halftime pep talk.
Typical...
Then the coach said she’s welcome to continue playing and was fired Sunday.

I have seen plenty of girl soccer players who can boot the shit out the ball. I have no doubt some could earn a spot on a team, regardless of level. Its all really about consistency. I don't consider specialized kickers and punters actual football players anyway. It's comical how they "chase" after kickoffs and punts.
Contact would be the issue. Besides separate locker rooms and such.

As I said, once they do, that will become fact. Why not post the 55 yarder Carli Lloyd hit at Ravens camp? We can ignore the 6 yard run up to kick it.

Wrong! That would be true if you had specifically posted "the ugly reality that women
don't play football at a high level." But you used the word can't not don't.

All I'm saying is, football players wouldn't give two fucks about whether the person kicking the ball has a D&B if the extra point isn't a 50/50 toss up.
And I have known plenty of female athletes that I would think twice about getting into a fight with!

Can't. You don't think if they could, there would be one at a high level? Who was the greatest female kicker? Katie Hnida? First XP blocked. She went on to kick a couple XP's the next year. 2/3 in college XP's. Pretty sure I could do that today as a 53 year old.

In one kick, Sarah Fuller became an inspiration — and her role models noticed
At the start of the second half, Vanderbilt kicker Sarah Fuller became the first female to appear in a Power Five football game when she deftly executed a squib kick. And in the living room of one of the country’s most renowned athletes, an appreciation of the moment resonated.
“It was exciting,” Hamm told Yahoo Sports by phone on Thursday. “My husband and I have talked to [our daughters] and raised them in an environment where they can do anything. To see it happening in front of them, I think that was a powerful message for them.”
...
But in less than a week since Fuller’s moment, the power of the platform that she’s building has been clear by the inspiration that she has sent to those who’ve inspired her. Fuller has gone from a gutsy goalkeeper on the Vanderbilt women’s soccer team to a household name. She has embraced her new role as a role model.

In an odd way, this is revealing to women in a bad light. This person was the goalkeeper on the SEC champion women's soccer team, she was really accomplished, and yet the only reason we know of her is when she started playing a men's sport. Even the Mia Hamm comment is kinda stark - did her kids not know about her either until she squib kicked once in one football game?
