Because they define people out, and by doing so, they define out the upset. Every conference that chooses to participate should have an auto-bid. That means the G-5 should be in there, too. But they're too scared of the upset to allow that....

Every playoff "designs someone out" - whatever the fuck that means.

A playoff is simply a competition played after the regular season by the top competitors to determine the league champion or a similar accolade. That's it. You're bullshit idea of what is and isn't a playoff isn't relevant.

The FCS doesn't currently give bids to the Ivy, MEAC, or SWAC. They are "designing people out" because they aren't designing a playoff to get those conferences to participate. Hell, the first handful of years after the FCS became a deal the playoff field had no autobids. Did the FCS playoffs not start until the very recent era? Hell the PFL has only had a playoff bid less than a decade. That means the FCS didn't have a playoff until they got a bid.

Literally zero association football playoff set ups meet your criteria for a playoff yet all of them are a playoff.

Korea uses a stepladder for their baseball playoff. Do you consider that an acceptable playoff?

Low-A through Double A in MiLB just take the top two teams at the end of the regular season to play a best of 5. Is that not a playoff?

Most international basketball leagues don't have divisions and conferences. They use a double round robin like college basketball where seeds are determined entirely be record. Since they are "Designing people out" is that not a playoff? There are teams being left out that otherwise wouldn't be if a division/conference set up was used.

The WNBA - and you of all people should know this - ignored conference affiliation. They take only the 8 best records no matter where the teams plays or what conference they are in. That is designing teams out.

Most T20 cricket leagues use the Page playoff system. The IPL, the top league in the world, takes the top 4 teams only and does it by record not any kind of affiliation.

The EIHL determines their playoff by ignoring any set up and taking just X number of teams

How do you feel about the NASCAR playoff. That is designing people out.

Look at Rugby - the Premiership takes only the top 4 records/points and ignores anything else.

The Super Rugby League also only takes the 4 top teams regardless of anything else.

The NFL went literal decades playing one playoff game for the title.

There is literally zero rule that a playoff has to take conference winners or x amount of teams from specific regions, divisions, or conferences to be known as a playoff.

Just because your limited understanding of language and reality doesn't like it, doesn't mean it's not a playoff.

There are no "bids" to the FBS playoff, so there is no one to leave out of a bid. It's all entirely "at large" selections. There is no conference affiliation to it - see Cincinnati getting an invite to the CFP last year. There are no bids, at all, even for the P5 leagues - see the PA12 having just 1 appearances even though they supposedly have a "bid" since they are P5. See the B12 being shut out of it this year - and the ACC being shut out of it. The G5 has as many playoff bids as the P12.

G5 conferences have a members on the selection committee. They have the same voice as any of the P5 leagues.

clenz...it's just a personal opinion. There's no need to freak out about it. Besides, your point about the relegation of the Ivy/MEAC/SWAC is a non sequitur because they CHOOSE not to participate for their own reasons. There's nothing in my construct to prevent that. I would only reserve an auto-bid for conferences that choose to participate. My only point is that by defining out the upset, you prevent, say, a Coastal Carolina from winning the championship simply because someone says they can't. In my book, that's wrong. You win your conference championship, and you're in...IF your conference chooses to participate. That gives you (and your conference) just as much a shot as anyone else. How would you like it if UNI couldn't play for the FCS Championship because the playoff organizing committee said that the MVFC was to be excluded...for no legitimate reason?

That's all I'm saying.

WAY to early 2023 poll. Check out #24 (and I’ll be the 1st to say double digit too high, and pre season polls are as worthless as titties on a bull).
