SH's 24-Team FBS REAL Playoff

Please note that I did this BEFORE the Conference title games. My predicted winners are bolded. Am I even close? And please no "24 is too many arguments." It's the only way I can see to get a REAL playoff where every conference gets an auto-bid and the upset is defined out. I'm also ignoring the bowl structure.

First Round

17 Oklahoma at 16 Utah
24 Kennesaw State (GA) at 9 TX A&M
20 NV-Las Vegas at 13 Brigham Young (UT)
21 Ohio at 12 S. California
18 TX Tech at 15 Navy (MD)
23 N. Texas at 10 Texas
19 Virginia at 14 Tulane (LA)
22 James Madison (VA) at 11 Miami (FL)

Second Round

17 Oklahoma at 1 OH State
9 TX A&M at 8 Georgia
13 Brigham Young (UT) at 4 Mississippi
12 S. California at 5 Vanderbilt
15 Navy at 2 Indiana
10 Texas at 7 Notre Dame
14 Tulane at 3 Oregon
22 James Madison at 6 Alabama

Quarterfinals

9 TX A&M at 1 OH State
5 Vanderbilt at 4 Mississippi
7 Notre Dame at 2 Indiana
22 James Madison at 3 Oregon

Semifinals

5 Vanderbilt at 1 OH State
3 Oregon at 2 Indiana

Finals

2 Indiana at 1 OH State

With all due respect:
-Doing it before the CCGs is dumb.
-NO-ONE is talking about the CFP going from 12 to 24. Everyone is talking about going from 12 to 16.

If you had a 16 team field in place now, all other rules the same, the additional 4 teams would be:
#11 Notre Dame (10-2)
#12 Texas (9-3)
#13 Vanderbilt (10-2)
#14 BYU (11-2)

Only 10 win P4 team out would be UVA (10-3). TX would be the only 9 win in because they beat #7 TX A&M and #13 Vandy, and played Ohio St OOC. Yeah the SEC would have 7 teams in. Tulane would be #15 @ #2 Ohio St, and JMU would be #16 @ #1 Indiana (JMU West).

I don't need every G5 conference with an auto-bid. One from the G5 is often way more than enough. Tulane and JMU are good teams and have had good seasons. Hopefully they beat the spread, but those games are likely non-competitive. Tulane already got trashed by Ole Miss in the regular season, I don't think this will be any different. No one is really begging to get more G5 teams in. You have 7 G5 teams in the proposed bracket. If those are generally comparable to 1v16 matchups, that would be the equivalent of having 18 of those 1v16 matchups in March Madness where they only have 4 today. Even in March Madness, no one really watched the 1v16 matchups, they're not generally competitive. 5v12, sure, but not the 1v16.

BDK is right, 16 is the max. Anything more than that is silly.

And there's no way Navy would beat Texas Tech. I've watched Navy all year, nice offense, not much of a defense. Texas Tech is legit.

Thank you for the frank, collegial discussion, guys. I realize I'm the only one (that I know of, anyway) pushing for a 24-team playoff with all leagues getting auto-bids. Sure, there will be some blowouts, but IMO completely defining out the upset is bad because the upset provides for great playoff drama. And BDK is probably right about trying to form a bracket pre-CCGs. And Gannon follows well with his assessment of TX Tech. Their CCG performance certainly proved that....

If you had a real legit, good G5 team that could play with the best of the P4, they're already going to get in anyway. They would've beaten the one or two P4 teams they played during the season, and likely by a good amount, and they would've gone undefeated. Sure, it's a big ask and hard to do, but we're talking about playing for the national title here, you should have demonstrated you belong there. If that means in most years we don't see more than the token G5 team in the playoff then that's fine - there aren't a lot of spots when you have a 16 team playoff and taking up slots with teams that can't compete has a huge impact on such a small field.
