We'll never know but the way the officials called the Southern Utah and McNeese games certainly helped them. I watched Sam Houston State a number of times this year and they really didn't have the defensive backs to play the style of defense they played unless they were allowed to grab and make contact when the ball was in the air. If they couldn't play that style they really weren't very good in coverage.

If nothing else that no call near the end of the Southern Utah game was huge. And you know as well as I do that that was really bad. No we don't know what would've happened after that but it sure as heck would've been better from Southern Utah's standpoint to get the first down they should've gotten by penalty on that play so that they could continue that drive with the lead late in the game.

And that was just the big obvious one. Sam Houston State was holding their receivers all night and it was clear that the "style" of those officials was to "let 'em play."

BTW it's almost worth having McNeese lose that Sam Houston State playoff game to get to see Sam Houston State get humiliated like that. If it wouldn't be for what Montana used to do to Southland teams at Missoula during their glory days that would've been the most humiliating loss ever for a Southland team in the playoffs. Oh well. At least it was the most humiliating loss by a Southland team in the playoffs since Montana whacked Troy State 70-7 in 1996.

I'll definitely be pulling for North Dakota State. It's good to see them win. They are a program built on recruiting high school players instead of bringing in a bunch of mercenaries. Yes I'm glad Jacksonville State not only beat but totally humiliated Sam Houston State. But they are another program built through the mercenary route.

As I've said on the McNeese board when people talk about how McNeese ought to sell out like Sam Houston State and Southeastern Louisiana have I think that the programs that have really established dynastic runs in I-AA/FCS have been programs that don't do that. Georgia Southern wasn't like that. Youngstown State wasn't like that during its run. Appalachian State wasn't like that. And North Dakota State isn't like that.

Yeah during those dynastic runs those programs might have brought in a few transfers to fill some holes. But for the most part they were built on recruiting and developing high school players. And I'd much rather see a program that operates like that, as North Dakota State does, win than a program that brings in a bunch of SEC transfers like Jacksonville State does now. Jacksonville State might not be quite as bad in that regard as Sam Houston State is but they're close.

North Dakota State is the "good guy" program in this matchup. It's nice to be able to look at the program that's had the most successful consecutive years run in I-AA/FBS program and note that they have ONE FBS transfer on their roster. And it's a guy they recruited hard out of high school that the coaches had a relationship with. Plus I can remember looking at their roster after on of their past titles and see ZERO FBS transfers on their roster.

But it IS going to be a an interesting matchup.

Among the many things I love about the way Sam Houston State got humiliated today is that Jacksonville State set an all time school record for points scored in the first half. They'd never scored that many in the first half before. And this is program that plays Austin Peay every year.

No. It's much better now that I got to see Sam Houston State humiliated like that. That was great.

Part of it is KC Keeler. That is one arrogant SOB.

This morning I read in the paper that he said Jacksonville State was going to be the first FCS team his team would play this year that had as much talent as his vaunted Bearkats do. When I read that I thought, "What does that say about him as an actual coach?" I mean, his team lost to Lamar. His team lost to McNeese. More probably than not his team would've lost to McNeese twice if McNeese hadn't self destructed with penalties after getting to first and goal at the one late in the game.

So now his vaunted super talented Bearkats came up against a team that had JUST as much talent as they did. And they lost 62-10. So what does that say about YOU as an actual football coach, KC?

It's always good to see an arrogant SOB like KC Keeler is get humiliated like that.

It says that my FCS playoff record drops from 17-4 to 17-5 and I still only have three appearances in the final and a championship.

He didn't win any championships this year and he just lost 62-10. It was Jacksonville State's biggest margin of victory of the year. He's got ALL this talent he gets by being a complete FBS transfer whore yet finishes two games out of first place in what Sagarin's got as the 8th strongest FCS conference and when he runs into another coach that's got a similar FBS transfer whore strategy he gets whacked by 52 points. His team gets out gained 639 to 259 in total yards.

Yes, he's good at applying the transfer whore strategy to assemble talent. But you do have to wonder how good he is at actually coaching.

A few years ago I couldn't understand why Delaware would ditch him. But when he opens his mouth it's like fingernails scratching a blackboard. I can now understand why he pissed people off. By the way I know a lot of you are to young to have experienced blackboards but believe me the sound I'm talking about isn't pleasant.

Sorry I assumed they're obsolete. I've come to expect that sort of thing. Like a couple of weeks ago I was having my hair cut by a young lady in her 20s and saw a watch that looked like a wind up watch on her wrist. I asked her if it was a wind up watch and she didn't know what I was talking about. Finally she asked, "They used to make those?"

She honestly didn't know that there was once such a thing as a watch that you would wind up.

Anyway for years all I've seen are those whiteboard things. Even when I went and took some grad courses at LSU during the 1990s there were no blackboards for any of the courses I took. Just big whiteboard things with the erasable markers.

My kids have never seen a blackboard in normal use. It's all whiteboard now. When I student taught in the early 90s, we were still on blackboards, so I assume the whiteboard phenomenon started in the late 90s, roughly in sync with the rise of the Internet.
