Not really. It's 4th. & 1, you've run for 300+ yards, and a first down pretty much ends it. You've also only completed 2 passes all game and your QB hasn't thrown well all season. Not to mention it probably would've been a pick & a big return if Murray had underthrown it.

Montana had 11 players on the line of scrimmage. It was a risky call but a great call.Vidav wrote:No, the outcome proves nothing. It was a bad play call for that team. They just got really lucky. That happens sometimes.kalm wrote:

Re: RE: Re: It's Officially Griz/Cat Week
I want to stay optimistic but we got worse as the seasons have gone on. Last year we started good and we're fine. This year started ok and kept getting worse. I'm a Griz fan and always will be but we need to stop drinking so much kool-aid and take the rose colored glasses off. The coaching has not been good and the players aren't making plays. We will get a fresh start next year as an unknown at qb will have to come in.SeattleGriz wrote:I believe a lot of the Delaney recruits will be leaving. I see the talent level starting to go back up. Look at who makes most of the plays now - the newer recruits.GrizFanStuckInUtah wrote:Today is a sad day in Griz football. I wish I could say I was optimistic about next year but I really don't see much better coming next year. The Griz are undisciplined and the coaches refuse to make adjustments. You would think that they would come up with a way to spy a QB that has rushed for 100yds multiple times prior to playing but we didn't even try. I am at a loss for what the Griz are doing right now and it starts at the top and goes all the way down to missed extra points.
Coming soon to Missoula if we dont' make changes:
/end rant
Plus, some of these guys have had three coaches in their careers. Awfully tough to expect greatness when you have to change offensive philosophy so often.

That was my point. They didn't need to take a risk there, it was unnecessary. You're basically arguing that it was a higher probability that Murray—who was 1/8 to that point—would complete a downfield pass than it was that someone could fall forward for a yard.kalm wrote:Montana had 11 players on the line of scrimmage. Like I said, these are experiences that will pay off in the future as well.

Re: It's Officially Griz/Cat Week
Even if the guy's wide open, the QB still has to get it there. Remember when Vernon Adams missed the wide open guy on 4th. down in the playoffs (I think it was against Illinois State)? And, if they'd thrown incomplete and the Griz had marched down to tie the game (& eventually won, let's say), how would that pay off in the future? Everyone would be saying that it's "The Streak" #2.kalm wrote:Montana had 11 at the line of scrimmage all game? Geez!Mvemjsunpx wrote:

Choate gambled when the reward was no better than it was for making the safe play. It was dumb, but he got away with it because Murray made a good throw.

Absolutely! Do you think Baldwin regretted that decision or wouldn't do it again? Some risks are worth taking.Mvemjsunpx wrote:Even if the guy's wide open, the QB still has to get it there. Great play call and Murray and that team will have that in the memory bank when a similar situation presents itself with more on the line.

Re: It's Officially Griz/Cat Week
I think you're missing my point. I was just noting that even good passing QBs miss wide-open guys in these situations, much less freshmen who are 1/8. MSU's chances of getting the first down running were higher than their chances of getting the first down passing, yet they chose the lower probability option even though simply getting the first down was enough to ensure the win. It's kinda like if a team had 4th. & goal at the 2 with 5 seconds left and the game tied and decided to throw it instead of kicking the chip-shot field goal with a reliable kicker.kalm wrote:Absolutely! Re: It's Officially Griz/Cat Week
They just look poorly coached... Which seems odd
Gustafson for a senior STILL can't read basic coverages
and he can't seem to read a blitz even when the defense isn't trying to hide it
Just STRANGE
A few times his slot receiver was basically uncovered until he was picked up by the safety
Any decent QB will see this immediately in a flooded zone - but - Not Gustafson

I said it before. We get rid of a lot of Delaney recruits who's abilities were maxed out. They just couldn't get any better than they were.

Yeah, it's all Delaney's fault.SeattleGriz wrote:I said it before. We get rid of a lot of Delaney recruits who's abilities were maxed out. They just couldn't get any better than they were.
I do like Stitt, but I hate the recent dichotomy that's emerged that you have to hate Delaney to like Stitt (or vice versa). There were a lot of Delaney recruits playing quite a bit on defense this year, including breakout star Josh Buss.
I'd rather have Delaney or Stitt than Pflugrad. Pflugrad (& O'Day) really screwed UM with the NCAA sanctions.

Didn't say it was Delaney's fault, but I can see where it looked that way. There has been a TON of turnover from coaches to players to philosophies the last 5 years.Mvemjsunpx wrote:Yeah, it's all Delaney's fault.SeattleGriz wrote:I said it before. What's a team like the Griz supposed to look like if you keep changing the blue prints?

Oh, that's all true, no question about that. And the scholarship losses certainly weren't helpful, either. I think Stitt will eventually have the team in good position, but it might take another year or two. QBs & WRs have to be on the same page in this offense, and the lack of any experience at WR made that difficult in 2016. The WRs will all be back in 2017, but a new QB has to be broken in. The plus side is that QB & DE are the only major offseason losses.SeattleGriz wrote:Didn't say it was Delaney's fault, but I can see where it looked that way. Re: It's Officially Griz/Cat Week
That Peavey kid you guys had on defense played a hell of a game. Looks like both our teams have some work to do this off-season.
Regardless, Saturday was a great day Unfortunately, there was no avatar bet this year
Given where we were a few weeks ago, this season had about as good an ending as we could have hoped for on the Bobcat side. I'm really happy for our seniors.
