Yeah the Southland seriously needs to get its act together. I realize that there is a lot of competition for FCS caliber players down here. A lot of them end up playing at schools that should be in FCS. Places like Louisiana Tech, Louisiana Monroe, Louisiana Lafayette, North Texas, Texas San Antonio, Texas State, Arkansas State. But, still, this geographical area has a lot of football talent. There is no excuse for the Southland being as weak as it's gotten.

You look at how easy getting through the Southland during the regular season was for Sam Houston State then look at not only this playoff game but also the last one and it's really sad. I will say that I do suspect their quarterback was off due to his injury last week. He was not accurate at all last night. But he doesn't play defense. And in their two playoff games Sam Houston State gave up 531 yards against Chattanooga then 607 against JMU. Rushing yards totals were 236 and 356. 1138 total yards 592 rushing yards, and 101 points in TWO games.

Having a team like that just WIN the league much less totally dominate it like Sam Houston State did this year really puts the Southland into perspective. They need to do something.

I won't say I wasn't surprised at the MAGNITUDE of the margin but I wasn't shocked because I was kind of expecting Sam Houston State's quarterback to have issues after watching the way he was carrying his arm after being injured late last week. If you were watching the last part of that game against Chattanooga and saw how he was holding himself with his arm drooping late you had to wonder if he could possibly play without being severely off the next week. Don't know for sure if that happened but I did see him a little bit this year and he was extremely accurate. He could put the ball in the right spot even if the receivers were pretty well covered. He wasn't like that last night. Whether it's because he hurt his arm or not he was not...whether it was the cold...whatever it was...like he's been previously this season.

As I wrote after Sam Houston State beat McNeese but gave up a bunch of offense, a bunch of rushing yards, and couldn't run the football it was a team that had an explosive passing game and nothing else. No running game. No defense. Last night the explosive passing game didn't work and the "nothing else" came home to roost. Since they had no defense and no running game they were immediately in serious trouble under those circumstances.

Remember, McNeese State...which did not have that good a running game this year...went on the road and put up 43 points, 547 yards, and 217 rushing yards at 6.6 yards per pop against Sam Houston State. Sam Houston State won the game because their quarterback threw for 504 yards and 6 touchdowns. It was very reasonable to expect that if Sam Houston State ever ran into a situation where their passing game wasn't overwhelming the opponent they were going to be in serious trouble.

Hey all the credit to JMU they beat up Sammy every which way possible and showed the whole country that SHSU was fraudulent with the record/ranking they had. That's two years in a row they've exited with a thud. JMU looks very very good right now, I think the Bison are beatable, but JMU can't get by next week with anything less than their A game.

It's hard to tell until they play somebody. I thought something like this was going to happen to Sam Houston State in 2011 because it was a similar situation. The Southland was down and Sam Houston State had run through the Southland. I thought they'd get a reality check as soon as they ran into a decent team from the Big Sky. Didn't happen. They made it to the championship game.
