Northern Colorado Fires Earnest Collins
Collins went 28-70 in 9 seasons at UNC. I'm a little surprised they canned him now with 2 years left on his contract, but the AD must've thought the bleeding had to stop now.

Re: Northern Colorado Fires Earnest Collins
This is definitely the leading contender for "Left-Field Hire of the Year":
Northern Colorado has apparently hired former Broncos WR Ed McCaffrey as their new head coach. McCaffrey had been serving as the HC at Valor Christian High School in Highlands Ranch. Going with a HS coach with no college or NFL coaching experience, even if he is a former NFL semi-star, is questionable to say the least.

If nothing else, it WILL get butts in the seats. McCaffrey was VERY popular among Broncos fans. UNC better watch out, though. If he has a Taylor-esque first season, he COULD get an invitation to Boulder (if not Denver) REAL quick....Mvemjsunpx wrote:This is definitely the leading contender for "Left-Field Hire of the Year":

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

A somewhat splashy hire from a program that has nothing (else) to lose. They get an "A" for effort at least. So I guess are thoughts that UNC should have went with a proven D2 coach or something? Any qualified candidates known that were interested in the gig?Mvemjsunpx wrote:This is definitely the leading contender for "Left-Field Hire of the Year":

Re: Northern Colorado Fires Earnest Collins
It's a splashy hire of an NFL name, to be sure, but the last time that happened in the Big Sky was the Jerry Glanville debacle. I don't recall a successful DI hire of a HS coach, either. I understand that NoCo is legitimately desperate to do something flashy, but this hire reeks of desperation.SDHornet wrote:A somewhat splashy hire from a program that has nothing (else) to lose. I wonder if this hire might be about getting financial support in the state of Colorado in order to make some facilities improvements. UNC is falling farther and farther behind in the facilities arms race, they will need to do something about that so that they can stop the bleeding.

If nothing else, the billion Bronco fans in this state will all be swooning when he's in town

The flashiness lasts only so long. Ultimately you are expected to produce wins and if you do not understand how to win in the conference, you won't last long, regardless of who you are.

JUCO hires don't always work, either, even when they were having loads of success at a juco. Case in point: Marshall Sperbeck....Mvemjsunpx wrote:It's a splashy hire of an NFL name, to be sure, but the last time that happened in the Big Sky was the Jerry Glanville debacle. Me neither. The only thing that comes close was Troy Taylor going from HS to OC at EWU to OC at Utah in two years. But he had prior coaching experience at Cal before he became a HS coach.Mvemjsunpx wrote:It's a splashy hire of an NFL name, to be sure, but the last time that happened in the Big Sky was the Jerry Glanville debacle. He could turn UNC into a powerhouse in FCS FOOTBALL and a possible talent source for the Broncos!!!!!SuperHornet wrote:If nothing else, it WILL get butts in the seats. Sounds like 0-4 in terms of successes from HS HC straight to I-A HC. Sanchez, who succeeded Hauck at UNLV, resigned last month.

As a UNC fan I can fully acknowledge that this hire might be crazy. That said, given that our previous two coaches were a combined 37-119, I'm ready and willing to give crazy a shot.
