Looking for Information on Wofford

Post by Eric »

Hi there! I'm new to the FCS and one of those FBS villians :D

Actually, I'm from Michigan so I don't have an FCS team to cheer for. We have a ton of D2 teams though. Anyway, the reason I'm posting here is so that I get a better feel for FCS teams. I run a blog and I was getting ready to make a segment about 10 of the most likely FCS/FBS "upsets". I just wanted to make sure I got things right before I post them (I got burned a year ago for that!).

I had a couple questions regarding Wofford since it seems that Google is a giant black hole when it comes to information about their football team. I don't know who is going to be their starting QB this year or starting RB. I do know that Ben Widmyer is gone as well as Dane Romero at RB. Is there anything else I should know about Wofford?

Thanks in advance! 8-)

Some of the Socon posters will have to jump on this one but they are very well coached and run the triple option very well. They are deceptively quick and had a pretty good defense when the Griz played them back in the 07 playoffs. Glad you came here to fill in some of the information Eric and get the story right. :thumb:

Thanks for the quick response! I knew that the Terriers run a triple option and run it pretty well. I watched them square off against South Carolina a year ago. I think they only lost by 10 points.

I should clarify that I love catching the FCS teams whenever they're on TV. I try to keep my horizons broadened. I know that last season, I was doing a mini-preview on North Dakota State. I only saw them once against Minnesota in 2007 so I didn't know much about their defensive players. One board caught wind of it and ridiculed me pretty badly

I'm betting that was the Bison board.

You're welcome to hang around and so forth but it looks like you may be only interested in the first few weeks for matchups. There will be lots of TV coverage on FCS as there has been for years but you would need to be a member of a board like this to be able to feret the information out. ESPN doesn't seem to run the games in their prim spots.

There is quite a bit of TV comverage anyway though.

Oh and if you're looking for possible upset information you came to the right place. The Weber guys believe they will pull at least one upset and possibly two this year. They will have one of the most explosive offenses in the FCS this year so both are possibilities but the Colorado State game is not as likely as the Wyoming game. I also think that Armanti Edwards may be able to guide App. St. over ECU. BTW Eric you better have some thick skin if you do stick around here at all. Appaholic is a hell of a nice fella but he will test you vigorously.

I don't think Wofford coaches know who will be the starting QB. Mitch Allen or Robby Davis both have some playing time under their belts. I think they will compete for the starting QB job.

If I were a betting man (and I am) I'd guess Allen will win out. I'm not sure who the fullback is. We need to get Soulman on this one. He will know more.

That's what I was thinking also but Soulio has been pretty sparse on here the last couple of months. He's got a lot of work to do in SC it would appear with recent news articles and all.

I guess taking some flak from Appalachian State fans comes with the territory of being a Michigan fan

I made a list of 10 potential ones. Note that these aren't listed in any order:

North Dakota State @ Iowa State
Weber State @ Wyoming
Southern Illinois @ Marshall
New Hampshire @ Ball State
Wofford @ Wisconsin
Appalachian State @ ECU
McNeese State @ Tulane (this isn't an upset)
Richmond @ Duke
Cal Poly @ Ohio
Central Arkansas @ Western Kentucky (again, not much of an upset)

I guess I should ask another question while I'm here. Does anybody have information on the Central Arkansas QB situation? I don't know who is going to replace Nathan Brown. From the NCAA Web site, it looks like Robbie Park.

Being a TxSt/SLC fan, I wasn't torn up about Brown graduating last year! He was a real threat when it came to spreading that ball around and proved it against the Bobcats the last two seasons. I am not real sure how the UCA fans feel about their next QB, but I've noted that many feel the next person will be just as productive. My concern for them, and where I can expect to see a bit of a drop off, is the lack of college game time experience and whether the new QB will buckle under pressure. Brown was clutch for UCA, but will the next guy do the same.

After looking through UCAfans.com it seems as though Park and Arkansas transfer Nathan Dick will be duking it out for the starting job. Park is a 5th year senior who's spent most of his college career as a back up, with one start to his name. The upside for him is knowledge of the system, and having worked beside Brown for several years. Dick transferred after seeing two more QBs enter the Arkansas system vying for the starting job. Don't know much about what he'll bring to the table. Best bet is it'll be one or the other, with my money at first on Park having been in the system for a long time. If there are struggles offensively down the line, though, I wouldn't be surprised to see Dick get the nod for a game or two to test the waters. The incoming Freshman shouldn't be a big factor in the fight to start for UCA. He's more of a dual-threat and I'm not sure that fits their system right now.

Alright, thanks dude. I'll have to include that in my post because I didn't mention Nathan Dick. If he shares the same genes as his brother, I'd be worried

I'll provide a link back here as well.

Eric wrote:Wofford @ Wisconsin
Wisconsin will not even practice stopping the option of Wofford. They will just concentrate on scoring against the Terrierist's Defense...and they will with fresh legs from the extra schollies. It will be close, but I think the Badgers pull it out.
Eric wrote:Appalachian State @ ECU
ECU knows who is coming to town and they are not going to be taking Appy lightly. The Goat Fuckers have a hard on for any team that hails from NC so this is the Game of the Year for them. Expect them to play up a level. (Even more so than the UM game.) This is a money game and a possible free ticket to the conference and playoffs.

Richmond will have a tough time with Duke this year, I believe. Dookies QB is pretty good (outstanding by their standards) and we all know Cutcliffe is a very good offensive coach. Richmond can win the game, but in my mind it would be a fairly big upset. Duke's been soooo bad for soooo long that we all just assume they are going to stink every year. I think that they may be like Vandy was last year and surprise some folks. I'm not saying they'll go to a bowl game, but I think they could win 4 or 5 games, this being one of them. Of course, Richmond could come out and smack them around like my Mountaineers did to a certain maize and blue team and I wouldn't be surprised. ;)

Didn't read all the posts but this is the link to the media guide. http://athletics.wofford.edu/news/2009/ ... 95344.aspx

We lost some great players last year but from what I've read so far on our site it could be a great year.
Here is the link to the Terrier Fan site. http://www.terrierfans.com/

Hope these provide what you are looking far.

I would say in all reality you are leaving off the most likely, and in my eyes, the one that will happen.

Villanova vs. Temple :thumb:

I think folks should put USF on Wofford alert as well. They aren't any better than Wisconsin.

Thanks all for the response. I think the USF game is a little different. If Wofford's defense doesn't improve like Bobbythekid noticed, the Bulls will score. I don't think the Bulls will have as difficult a time defending Wofford's option as Wisconsin will because USF is more athletic at LB and with their DEs. They laid an egg against Elon in the opener a few years ago though.

And Cal Poly is taking on the Ohio Bobcats, not the Ohio State Buckeyes. I should clarify that ;)

About Villanova/Temple, I was thinking about adding that onto my list. I did make mention of it in a brief sentence where I acknowledged that the 10 games listed didn't cover all the potential upsets. I do think Temple is not your usual Temple team in that they'll win 8 games and win the MAC East. It'll be a competitive ballgame though because a lot are expecting Villanova to be one of the best FCS teams out there.

Not entirely. I know that Iowa is expected to do some good things this year and they have a great offensive line, stability at QB, and question marks at the DT positions. They did lose Shonn Greene though. I would give UNI a shot to be competitive, but I don't like their chances to win. :(

I'd say that's a good summary. Iowa usually fails to meet expectations....so it'll be interesting to see the final score.

haha. FAIL!
Like Eric said in a later comment, it's the Ohio University Bobcats (in Athens, playing in the Mid-American Athletic Conference), not Ohio State.

I don't know, USF is so inconsistent. Selvie can be blocked due to his size. And Grothe, if he turns it over early he's prone to more mistakes. The key to beating USF is getting up on them early, Leavitt doesn't coach well under pressure.

Yeah, it has been a busy summer!! I haven't been able to do as much Wofford research as I would like, but I do have my season tickets and my ear to the ground listening for Wofford football developments; I had my ear to the ground earlier this summer here in Gaffney, but that was more of a "duck and cover" thing.

Glad to be back!
