ODU's Howitzer Cannon Broke :(

Post by ∞∞∞ »

Apparently the 75mm Howitzer Cannon we used before the start of a home game, at halftime, and after a win broke. The soldiers said it had an accident, and by accident...they mean it "blew up."

It kinda looked like this:

But it's okay! ODU wasn't just gonna let this tradition die! They got us a new one...

I haven't been to a home Griz game since 2006

but we have a Howitzer at Wash-Griz and if memory serves me THAT's the loudest motherfucker on the planet.

My dad used to always prepare for it after halftime and went it went off he would always go "JESUS FUCKING CHRIST!" and hold his chest all pissed off. And I mean really pissed off.

Funniest shit ever.

Looks like it chased everybody out of the stadium.....
- Big 10 Football - So boring Wisconsin is our most exciting team...
- Big 10 Football - Where 117th ranked Purdue is dominant...
- Big 10 Football - Where team speed and passing offense are not required...

Looks to be a 105mm. They ought to go all in and just get a 155mm.

DuckDuckGriz just implied Montana uses a cannon too...but now I'm curious to know what other schools do at any time during a game (FBS or FCS)? Also, does anyone know the exact model of the cannon we used tonight? I forgot to ask the military men.

Like I said, it looks like a 105. It's certainly not a 155mm, of which I'm intimately familiar.

Sorry. I'm not a military person so I'm not good with information on artillery stuff, but is it a Howitzer 105mm? Is Howitzer a brand or just a name for cannon's like this? Thanks!

Just a name.

Here's 11th Marines setting up their 155s to give you an idea of the size:

O_O

and I thought the cannon used tonight was big! The NCAA should make 155mm's mandatory at games!

Found it! ODU's is an M119 105mm howitzer. Now you can tell your fellow fans all about it:

The one the Griz use isn't huge by any means...but it's one loud sonuvabitch.

Gah! First our recruits, and now our cannon celebrations! ODU is taking everything from the Dukes!

We've been using it for scores and end of half/game as long as I can remember

...but seriously, I think JMU and ODU will eventually have a very special rivalry, and are gonna help each other athletically in the future. I don't even think UVA and VT are as dedicated to sports as JMU and ODU are (minus football) in the state of Virginia...but those two got that ACC thing goin' for them. For CAA teams though, we don't do too bad across the board.

Cannon list now:
Army
JMU
Montana
ODU

Ah, the sixteen inch guns! Not very practical for a maneuver force, but an effective area weapon for sure.

When we used to plan maneuver around(and under) our gun target lines, they always made us account for the possibility of naval gunfire support. In which case, the plan was simply to get the fuck out of the area. The sixteens come in so flat that you DO NOT want to be short or long of the impact area. They're pretty good on left/right, but never get the distance right.

Exactly why we were always taught to setup parallel to the gun target line if possible. Never ever make the mistake of calling in danger close, fire for effect with a 16 inch battery. If you do run like hell as soon as you call it in.

Its lovely to converse with other Redlegs! 13F is on the boards.
