Quarterbacks Shine in NAU Spring Game

Post by dbackjon »

04/26/2008) FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona University football team unveiled its new playing surface and showed the early ability to effectively run the offense on it as the White team defeated the Blue 21-10 at the Walkup Skydome.
“We went into spring trying to improve ourselves fundamentally,” said Head Coach Jerome Souers. “I think we are better. Schematically we wanted to get things in and get good at what we are doing. We accomplished that goal. We wanted to see our team develop with team chemistry. At times we are very good but we are not consistent there yet. It leadership and the intensity we play with. We are a work in progress but our outlook is outstanding.”

Souers divided his team into the two teams with the starters making up the White squad, while the second and third team units represented the Blue team. Several players played for both units to address depth issues with the quarterbacks playing for both teams in red non-contact jerseys.

The quarterbacks combined to complete 12-for-18 passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Lance Kriesien went 4-for-5 for 50 yards. Corey Slater completed 4-for-6 for 61 yards with a touchdown, while Michael Herrick went 4-for-7 for 51 yards and a touchdown.

“We are going to continue with what we have been doing and working with all three,” said Souers. “There is so much more to the quarterback position than just taking a snap, throwing a ball and handing it off. We expect that player to be a leader and have an impact on the rest of our offense. That guy makes the whole thing click. The play and performance as an individual is just a part of the puzzle. We like the way each of them is approaching their game.”
