I knew who this was when I was about 8 and lived in NJ...a fair piece from LA. Looked forward to the Bayou Classic every year and even my kids know this stuff.∞∞∞ wrote:Nope...but I assume he coached at Grambling?bandl wrote:

Re: Known programs
What some of you are not recognizing is that there is a bit of a generation gap happening here. Even if you are under 24 or 25 and know about this rivalry and the importance of these teams in football history you are not the average youngin' these days. It is a pretty fair statement that the HBCU's are losing a bit of notoriety with the younger set. They are becoming less relevant on the national scene than they were to most of us in our 30's, 40's, & 50's and beyond.

Ursus speaks the truth. The earlier HBCU teams had some of the greatest college players ever.Ursus A. I'm about 2 months into my 30's and know very little of Grambling, even less about Southern. In fact, if you asked me who Grambling played each year on NBC, I wouldn't know. I do know who Eddie Robinson is, though. My dad, who's in his early 60's knows a lot more about Grambling, simply because of their historical significance. He's told me about watching the game years ago when the south wasn't as "friendly" towards those types of things as they are today and how people would get up in arms about the game being televised. He's a football fan though, so he just wanted to watch the game, no matter who was playing.

Re: Known programs
I think that is a huge reason for it's decline on the national scale. 'There is a lot less passion and less conflict over racial issues and so forth so the natural progression is going to be that it won't get the attention it did when these issues were at the forefront of the American psyche. It is falling back from lofty status to a more "normal" state in American culture.ChetSteadman wrote:Ursus A. Re: Known programs
The only FCS schools I knew anything about in high school were Southern, Grambling. and some Ivies.
Sorry but UNI and SIU are not known.
I had heard of many more due to basketball though.
