10 top fcs recruiting classes of 2010

Per Rivals, here are the FCS top 4 classes:

1) Appalachian State
2) Richmond
3) Northwestern State
4) Western Carolina

This makes 2 years in a row that App, NWST and my Cats have finished in the top 5 of the FCS in recruiting.

I worked for Rivals for about 3 years, I honestly woulnd't put too much stock in any of their rankings outside of the top 100 or 150 players in the country. Once you get outside of that Rivals, Scout, ESPN, etc... don't really care and make things up. Most of ranking stars are based on recruiting offers and things like that. I covered and interviewed a kid that went from a 2 star one week, during the off season with no offers. During the next week and a half he picked up offers from Texas, TAMU, OU, OkSU and Bama and he jumped up to a 5 start top 50 prospect.


How does he go from a two star, not on the radar not rated with a number recruit to a top 50 can't miss prospect in 9 days without playing a game, going to a practice or doing a work out?

A couple of years ago GSU had a kid from Florida that was a 3 star recruit who commited to us and suddenly he dropped to 2 stars after his commitment. Signing day he signed with Boston college and suddenly became a 3 star again. And this week we had a player who was not ranked and pulled his commitment to GSU and commited to Auburn and suddenly he becomes a 2 star recruit.

The answer to the original question of this thread is a flat, and emphatic no. Information published on recruits from the recruiting services is useless in trying to rate the classes of FCS schools. You say that but the 2 star recruits we have signed the last 7-8 years have 90% become big contributors and starters. We had a seven 2 star class in 2004 and all seven became starters and stars of the team.

You can't just go by Rivals. Scout has to come into play also. We had eight 2 stars there. Rivals sucks at covering the Northwest.

Didn't have a single 2 star from scout that wasn't listed by Rivals.

Yeaahhh, most of the stars you listed were user ranks. I just gave one of SBU's recruits a 5 star listing...so you better watch out!!

This isn't a shot at Liberty's class, which looks great. It's a way of saying don't count your stars before they hatch. There have been some absolutely horrid FCS schools who get consistently high rated recruitment classes...more evidence to ignore all that.

I worry about J'Courtney Williams. He had some law trouble...a LOT of law trouble..a WHOLE lot of law trouble, but still would have been picked up by an FBS school if he had the kind of potential that made him a star when he was a freshman.

Some information from the Tennessee Vols forum. Apparently they picked up two others from his JuCo. Speculation is his stats have depreciated drastically or his grades put him below the FBS bar. Regardless, Liberty may have been his only offer this year, which honestly should bother you as much as it does me.

Bottom of chart, 2006-2007: 15,043 3 to 4 years high schools + 4,048 5-6 year high schools= over 19,000 high schools, yet according to the rocket scientist Phoebus coach, there are only 5,000-6,000 football playing high school seniors in the entire country. Try maybe 200,000-300,000. Heck, with around 350 public and private high school football teams in VA alone, there are probably around 5k senior high schools football players in just VA. And probably only around 2% of them are getting Div I schollies.

I'm sure Tressel's class is just a bit better than Wolf's class Although this is a great start to a new era in YSU football

Right now everybody has great recruiting classes. Just ask the coaches.

I don't worry about J'Court. We've had other kids come in under Rocco's watch who had off-field "issues", and they have been model citizens while at LU. If J'Court gives us problems, he will be off the team.

I'm more excited about some of these freshman anyway. We stole Matt Baptiste from Richmond when London switched. Our QB Henderson was at the top of our list from the get go, and QB/WR Curry looks to be very good as well.

It doesn't matter. It's nice to see people ranking ASU's recruiting class at the top. But, it doesn't matter. Armanti Edwards and Corey Lynch were 0 star recruits...seemed to work out fine. It's good offseason fodder, but other than that, rather pointless.

As has been mentioned here, wait 2-3 years and you'll know how successful your recruiting has been. Some of Apps best in recent years have been walk-ons such as RB Kevin Richardson that are totally out of the ratings.
At this level recruiting effectiveness also depends on filling needs as there are fewer scolarships to go around. On paper from that prespective I would rate ASU's class as fantastic, potentially filling needs on the offensive and defensive line and at backup QB. With 2 starting D tackles graduating ASU picked up 2 BIG DTs from juco that hopefully will contribute immediately.
