The Simplot Games the largest high school track meet in the country and of course the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo. What does Eastern have? Even with a red field that little 8500 seat stadium will still be a peace of SH*%.
As a venue, it's certainly not the worst place to watch a concert or a rodeo.

But as a football stadium, it ranks down there among the worst in FCS. Mostly, in my opinion, because of the damn Astrofturf. Get rid of that, and people will quit with the Holt Arena bashing.....For the most part. lol

The rumor is that new turf will come in the next year and it will be green. I will see the AD tonight at the ISU UNC basketball game and try to get a strait answerer out of him.

That would be a real nice feature that would greatly improve that place. Hope it happens for you guys...and the rest of the conference for that matter. :thumb:

No definite answers, but ISU needs $1.2 million and they have $500,000 so when they get the rest of the money.

Montana hating it confirms that it was the right thing to do, and of course it was a somewhat tongue in cheek comment.

But it's brilliant marketing. After reading that sentence, every Eastern fan and former player who has ever set foot in Washington Grizzly Stadium just reached a little deeper into their wallet.

Hate on Holt Arena all you want. There is no doubt that a new surface and facility upgrade is sorely needed.

However, stick 10-12K in the Dome when the team is winning and you have the 2nd or 3rd best home field advantage in the BSC.

That statement may have been brilliant marketing, but I still say "Says who?"

Most Montana fans I've talked to are in the "who gives a rip, it's just a silly gimmick" camp. It's not close to worth the effort needed to hate it.

So, to sum up this thread...

EWU has a stadium that holds only 8500....no video board...but they are going to blow their wad on a red carpet..."Because Montana Hates It"....

Hopefully this doesn't turn into a "WTF were we thinking?" ordeal in a few years for Eastern, but it seems at this point that they're not only trying to validate this to other people, but also to themselves.

Who cares what we think? Come the day EWU plays Montana this year, there will still be more Griz fans than Eastern fans, regardless of the red turf.

THis is from EWU athletic sitehttp://goeags.com/sports/m-footbl/2009- ... n26RedTurf I quote "Eastern Athletic Director Bill Chaves, who is working with associate athletic director for development Marc Hughes on the project, said EWU needs to secure additional funding through private contributions before actual replacement can be started. It is hoped that the project can be funded and completed in time for the 2010 season." It is a great thing that Eastern has received this gift of $500,000 but the average turf field cost an average of $1-$1.2 million. That means EWU does not have the money and hopes to raise $500,000 to $700,000 by the 2010 season. I think it might take them a bit so maybe we will se the red by 2011.

I think everyone needs to remember that this is a quote from one administrator and at no time was a poll constructed to determine that this is the real reason to put in red field turf. It is a fact that we dislike Montana and consider them are rivals since Idaho left but it is silly to believe that this project is built around whether Montana hates it or not. I think if you reread the article you will notice that there was various reasons that the color red was chosen and he simple threw that quote in there to add some humor to the article. You damn Montana fans are so sensitive and have this "holier than though" complex. Chill out!

We need turf, improved seating, and a video board. How to prioritize the three is debateable.

The most we've ever averaged in attendance was just shy of 7,000 (2006) with the main grandstand handling those needs for the most part. So the arguments for seating improvements are mostly cosmetic. Expansion right now is only relevant for when we host Montana and bring in temporary seating to increase the capacity to around 11,000. I would much rather have our athletes performing on a quality surface every home game than making sure Montana folks don't get their arse's soar every other year.

The turf upgrade improves the cosmetics equally as well as permanent/improved seats in the east grandstand that mostly go empty anyway.

The only real beef is of course the color. And while I admit it's gimmicky, we have already made an appearance on PTI, the Dan Patrick Show, Sportscenter and a bunch of local media coverage. And as noted in another thread, Colin Cowherd will be MCing our spring ball lobster feed fundraiser and I'm sure will mention it on his show if he already hasn't. And come football season, you can add to that the increased regional coverage in the form of highlights on the likes of FSN, NW Cable News, etc. Also consider the curiosity factor of the thousands of Spokane area football fans, high school players, coaches, and EWU alumn who have never been to a game or who choose to drive 80 extra miles to watch the cougs and the vandals instead. Many of them will be attending their first EWU game or first in a very long while, and might find the product quite appealing and much closer to home. Finally, this should also give us the ability to host high school playoff games which helps in recruiting both new fans and potential athletes.

Go back and read the last sentence of the article and both you and Hogan might realize the off-hand comment about Montana hate was just that...off-hand.

Leave it to a Griz fan to not appreciate the challenges one faces in marketing an FCS football program outside of Missoula. :coffee:
