Week 12 - Conference by Conference Breakdown

Post by Mvemjsunpx »

Just for fun, I decided to reverse the order this week.

Pioneer League

BUT 17-34 USD
MHEAD 14-13 DAY
MARIST 24-19 DVDSN
VALPO 47-14 CAMP
DRAKE 9-41 JVILLE

  • NConf Record: 0-1
    Overall: 16-13

    vs. FCS: 0-1
    Overall: 5-6

Best Performance: Morehead St. 14, Dayton 13 - The Eagle offense had a miserable outing, amassing just 144 yards. Fortunately for them, the defense held Dayton to barely half that total. Did I mention this game had 24 punts?

Worst Performance: Campbell 14, Valparaiso 47 - Though they were in the game for a half, the Camels get dominated on the ground by a really bad team.

Most Surprising Result: Dayton 13, Morehead St. 14 - After winning seven consecutive meetings from 2000 through 2005 (they met twice in 2002), the Flyers have now lost three straight to the Eagles.

NEC

RM 35-20 SFPA
MONM 37-14 DUQ
WAG 11-30 ALB
CCSU 49-14 SACHRT

  • NConf Record: 0-0
    Overall: 13-17

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 11-16

Best Performance: Central Connecticut St. 49, Sacred Heart 14 - Blue Devils force 5 turnovers & run for 337 yards.

Worst Performance: St. Francis (PA) 20, Robert Morris 35 - The Red Flash took a big step toward avoiding a winless season by taking a 20-14 lead into the 4th. quarter, but then came the fumbles…

Most Surprising Result: Sacred Heart 14, Central Connecticut St. 49 - Closing the season like this makes the 8-2 start for the Pioneers look completely fraudulent.

Independents

BRY 23-7 IONA
MARIST 24-19 DVDSN
WSSU 16-23 NCCEN
SAVST 24-7 WEBBER

  • Non-Ind Record: 3-0
    Overall: 18-25

    vs. FCS: 2-0
    Overall: 8-23

Best Performance: NC Central 23, Winston-Salem St. 16 - Another game with no offense. The Eagles were outgained 192-154, but forced 4 turnovers to get away with a win.

Worst Performance: Iona 7, Bryant 23 - Gaels give up two 100 yard rushers in front of a pathetic crowd of 483.

Most Surprising Result: NC Central 23, Winston-Salem St. 16 - The Eagles beat a team that had seemingly turned things around the last few weeks and even their series record with the Rams at 21-all.

SDK 42-20 SUU

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 10-12

Best Performance: (#3) Cal Poly 51, UC Davis 28 - Jonathan Dally only threw for 93 yards, but he and FB Jordan Yocum combined for 283 rushing yards as the Mustangs essentially cemented a playoff spot.

Worst Performance: Southern Utah 20, South Dakota 42 - The Thunderbirds give up a whopping 445 rushing yards (& three 100 yard rushers) while being held below zero on the ground themselves.

Most Surprising Result: Southern Utah 20, South Dakota 42 - How the hell do you beat North Dakota on the road and then follow that with an ugly loss to a Coyotes team that had no Division-I wins coming in?

Ivy League

HARV 24-21 PENN
COR 7-17 COLUM
BROWN 45-16 DART
PRINCE 0-14 YALE

  • NConf Record: 0-0
    Overall: 10-14

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 10-14

Best Performance: (#19) Harvard 24, Penn 21 - Crimson ride 3 interceptions to a tough win despite giving up 445 yards.

Big South

VMI 26-40 SB
GWEBB 10-30 LIB
EDWAT 6-48 CHSO
CCU 21-13 PRESBY

  • NConf Record: 1-0
    Overall: 20-18

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 12-13

Best Performance: (#24) Liberty 30, Gardner-Webb 10 - Flames force 5 turnovers to technically finish undefeated in the Big South (Presbyterian doesn't count in the Big South standings).

Worst Performance: VMI 26, Stony Brook 40 - The option-happy Keydets actually get outrushed 447-364 and give up two 200 yard rushers.

Most Surprising Result: Stony Brook 40, VMI 26 - The Seawolves have run for the insane total of 1082 yards in just the last 2 games. Also, running backs Edwin Gowins & Conte Cuttino are both averaging over 100 ypg this season.

SWAC

ALCORN 3-37 PVAMU
MVSU 0-34 APB
ALST 0-15 SU
AAMU 21-37 JSU

  • NConf Record: 0-0
    Overall: 11-22

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 1-12

Best Performance: Jackson St. 37, Alabama A&M 21 - Tigers run for 260 yards & get 17 unanswered 2nd. half points to clinch a spot in the SWAC Championship Game.

Worst Performance: MIssissippi Valley St. 0, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 34 - Losing 34-0 to one of the worst teams in FCS is a momentum killer for any program.

Most Surprising Result: Mississippi Valley St. 0, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 34 - The Delta Devils put up 58 on a bad team last week, yet got shut out by an even worse team this week.

    Overall: 20-16

Best Performance: Holy Cross 27, Lafayette 26 - Dominic Randolph throws for 422 yards and 3 TDs to lead the Crusaders toward a Patriot League title showdown with Colgate.

Worst Performance: Georgetown 0, Fordham 17 - Hoyas held to just 99 yards by the underachieving Rams.

Most Surprising Result: Holy Cross 27, Lafayette 26 - The Crusaders have another chance to win a Patriot League title. Can they get the job done this time?

CAA

NE 14-42 HOF
UMASS 21-52 UNH
MAINE 37-7 URI
TOW 31-34 NOVA
UD 14-31 RICH
W&M 24-48 JMU

  • NConf Record: 0-0
    Overall: 28-17

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 26-5

Best Performance: (#1) James Madison 48, (#12) William & Mary 24 - Rodney Landers and Eugene Holloman both break 100 yards rushing as the Dukes get a remarkable fifth win over playoff contending teams this season.

Worst Performance: Northeastern 14, Hofstra 42 - To get handled by Maine or William & Mary is one thing, but to be outgained 523-171 by Hofstra is a new low for the 2008 Huskies.

Most Surprising Result: Towson 31, (#6) Villanova 34 - QB Sean Schaefer nearly led the Tigers to a gigantic upset, but it wasn't to be.

MEAC

SCSU 32-0 MORG
DSU 34-28 NFOLK
WSSU 16-23 NCCEN
HAMP 24-45 FAMU
HOW 12-14 BCOOK

  • NConf Record: 0-1

    Overall: 8-9

Best Performance: (#17) South Carolina St. 32, Morgan St. 0 - The Bulldogs run for 215 yards and hold the Bears to 133 total yards as they finally shake off the status of MEAC bride's maid.

Worst Performance: Winston-Salem St. 16, NC Central 23 - The Rams throw away what they'd accomplished the last few weeks thanks to 4 turnovers.

Most Surprising Result: Bethune-Cookman 14, Howard 12 - The Wildcats had very little offense, but a 54 yard TD run by QB McKinson Souverain & a clutch 2PC stop allowed them to avoid an embarrassing upset heading into the Florida Classic.

SoCon

ELON 16-24 APPST
GSU 17-10 FUR
UTC 21-24 CIT
WOFF 28-7 SAM

  • NConf Record: 0-0

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 12-4

Best Performance: (#2) Appalachian St. 24, (#12) Elon 16 - The Mountaineers didn't dominate like they had the past few weeks, but managed to clinch the SoCon title anyway.

Worst Performance: Tennessee-Chattanooga 21, The Citadel 24 - The Mocs actually play someone close for the first time this season, but still remain winless against FCS.

Most Surprising Result: Georgia Southern 17, (#14) Furman 10 - Eagles finally get a win over a good team instead of a tragic loss.

Big Sky

NAU 13-28 EWU
NCOL 25-45 SAC
IDST 10-29 UMT
PORTST 32-49 MTST

  • NConf Record: 0-0
    Overall: 14-18

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 6-5

Best Performance: Eastern Washington 28, Northern Arizona 13 - Matt Nichols throws for 346 yards and 2 TDs and leads the Eagles to a 21-0 second half.

Worst Performance: Northern Colorado 25, Sacramento St. 45 - The Bears play Sac pretty even in both yardage & turnovers, but still lose by 20 and appear headed for a third straight 1 win season.

Most Surprising Result: Northern Arizona 13, Eastern Washington 28 - After holding 4 of their first 6 opponents to negative rushing yardage, the tables turn on the 'Jacks as they are held to negative rushing yardage by the Eagles.

Southland

NICH 10-34 TXST
UCA 49-41 SFA
SELA 30-27 SHSU (OT)
MCNSE 24-17 NWST

  • NConf Record: 0-0
    Overall: 19-14

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 10-5

Best Performance: (#16) McNeese St. 24, Northwestern St. 17 - Cowboys run for 261 yards as they stay alive in the Southland race.

Worst Performance: Nicholls St. 10, Texas St. 34 - The Colonel option does nothing, netting only 118 yards on 44 carries in a surprisingly lopsided loss.

Most Surprising Result: Sam Houston St. 27, Southeastern Louisiana 30 (OT) - Rhett Bomar throws for 506 yards, but it isn't enough to prevent the Bearkats from falling to 4-5.

Missouri Valley

NDSU 48-27 MIZST
ILST 45-48 WIU (OT)
SDKST 35-38 SIU
UNI 28-0 INST

  • NConf Record: 0-0
    Overall: 12-18

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 10-7

Best Performance: (#10) Southern Illinois 38, South Dakota St. 35 - Kyle Dougherty makes a 38 yard field goal with 3 minutes left to keep the Salukis in position to win the MVC auto-bid while simultaneously ending the Jackrabbits' playoff hopes.

Worst Performance: Missouri St. 27, North Dakota St. 48 - The Bears give up 354 yards on the ground including an 80 yard TD run by Tyler Roehl in the 4th. quarter.

Most Surprising Result: (#25) Western Illinois 48, Illinois St. 45 (OT) - Herb Donaldson's 243 rushing yards and 3 TDs are certainly impressive, but needing OT to beat Illinois State makes one wonder what happened to the Leatherneck team that nearly beat Arkansas in Week 1.

OVC

UTM 31-21 SEMO
AP 15-13 EIU
TSU 21-26 JAXST
MUR 7-34 EKU

  • NConf Record: 0-0
    Overall: 15-18

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 10-6

Best Performance: Jacksonville St. 26, (#18) Tennessee St. 21 - The Gamecocks abruptly end the Tigers' playoff hopes mostly thanks to 3 missed Tennessee State field goals of which one was blocked & returned 72 yards for a TD by LB Andrew Ridgeway in the 1st. quarter.

Worst Performance: Eastern Illinois 13, Austin Peay 15 - The Panthers have a punt blocked & returned for a touchdown and only manage 253 yards against a weak defense.

Most Surprising Result: Eastern Illinois 13, Austin Peay 15 - After two straight at-large bids and what looked to be another OVC title contending roster at the beginning of this year, the Panthers fall to 4-7 and a pathetic 2-5 in conference play.
