Any Charleston Southern guys here?
I'm a former Buc. Are they ever going to get that new stadium built? The rest of the teams in the Big South are leaving us in the dust with facilities, but we're still winning in that league. Add lights and a nicer stadium, and recruiting will keep improving. Don't know why they never committed to it. I even played in the old "duck box" stadium before the new pressbox was built. They should have just moved the whole thing behind the pond next to the fieldhouse in my opinion and built it up from there.

Welcome!
There are a couple of Chuck South posters on here - hopefully they know the answers to your questions.

Thanks. I just found this website. How cool to have one devoted solely to 1-AA football. I hate the FCS/FBS label. I still call it 1-AA.dbackjon wrote:Welcome!

The story if Charleston Southern football is not well known, but I was a part of that program for a long time and know a lot of it's early history. The program started as a simple intramural club team in 1989. Then went Division 3 in 1991. And then they jumped from D3 straight to 1-AA, never spent a day as D2, and had growing pains in the mid 90's. Slowly improved in the late 90's, early 00's, and have evolved into a competitive member of the Big South, winning that league in 2005. Quite an accomplishment for a team to go from club team to D-1AA conference champs in only 15 years, with a student body of only about 4500 and a small stadium and very humble facilities.
I'd nominate Charleston Southern as the 1-AA team that has done the most with the least over the last 10 years.

Co-Champions!!! because that year was CCU's second Big South Championship in only its third year of football!
Re: Any Charleston Southern guys here?
We beat CCU that year. After the game, the CCU players and coaches even said there was no "co". If they beat us, we wouldnt claim a co. In 05 the big south didnt have a tie breaker because there was no auto bid. Now they do and I think its head to head winner.
But anyway, the trophy for 05 is sitting at CSU. The banner in the gym doesn't say "Co-Champions". No offense to CCU, they're a fine team. But the gentlemens agreement absent any official rule is head to head winner claims it.
But the 05 game was a classic. "PUNT COASTAL PUNT!!"

We have a Trophy, Ring, and a banner as well and it doesn't say "Co" either.

Welcome to the new guy! Go to the top of the page and get a look around at the information like the "Stadium Database" and so forth and see if there are any corrections or other things that you see and like. We did a lot of work on that last summer.
If you do have anything to add to our content then go find the "Content Submission" forum and start a thread there and Chris (Site owner) will get it added for you.

According to the Conference, we were Co-Champions. YOUR SCOREBOARD even said it. That's what happens when you have two teams end the season with the same record. It's a simple concept. If you played, then you realize that just because you won the game doesn't mean you won the conference. It's the overall conference record.
As to your stadium, I agree with the sentiment that it should be updated. Hell, put some lights out there so we don't have to have games when it's hot as balls at the end of November. Let's have some night games!!!!!! And maybe some toilets, instead of the Port O Potties.

Re: Any Charleston Southern guys here?
Really? You guys are claiming a 2005 Big South Championship? In 2005, CSU and CCU both finished with 1 conference loss. CSU beat CCU head to head. Sounds like a recruiting ploy to claim another title, when really CSU has more rights to that 05 title for beating CCU. If an outsider saw two teams both wearing 05 champ rings, the obvious question is who won head to head? Thats the champion.DKHardee wrote:We have a Trophy, Ring, and a banner as well and it doesn't say "Co" either.

Saw the pics of your new weight room at CCU. Awesome facility, as good as a lot of D1A schools.

Re: Any Charleston Southern guys here?
Yeah, I saw the "official" Big South rules said 05 was a co-championship.
But hey, it's just a pride thing haha! We beat 'em that year, so we at least get the braggin' rights for that one!

I'm hoping it brings in higher profile recruits for us. our other weight room was 1/4 the size. Also our locker room is a lot bigger.bucs90 wrote:We hope so. Liberty is gonna be tough for anyone to beat though.DKHardee wrote:

Re: Any Charleston Southern guys here?
The facilities are the #1 thing holding Charleston Southern back from really big success. Its in a great location for recruiting. 10 minutes from the beach, a city with year round party atmosphere (Sorry, but Myrtle Beach sucks in the winter, Chucktown is great 12 months a year).DKHardee wrote:I'm hoping it brings in higher profile recruits for us. our other weight room was 1/4 the size. But our stadium and weight room suck. Not much tradition there either, but starting to build some. Being the underdog is kinda the CSU tradition actually.
But if the school would fund a bigger stadium, which they would add lights too and have night games, they'd draw more fans and higher profile recruits. Because honestly, CSU home games at 1pm in September on metal bleachers and no shade just SUCK. It's too damn hot. Well, it's hot there well into November. So lights are badly needed to draw fans out. I wish they'd move the game field to the current practice field, and have it without a track so it's a bit of a tighter fan experience. Need more heckling. The current game field could still hold track and practices.
In fact, about 10 years ago there were strong rumors on campus that the AD and a big corporate sponsor actually wanted to make a massive investment in a dome on campus, like the one East Tennessee State used to play in, that would host football, basketball, track, tennis, volleyball, and the whole Athletic Dept offices and locker rooms. ETSU's was great. And in the offseasons, that facility could host concerts, events, etc, to make money. But from what I heard, the corporate sponsor didn't vibe with the Christian theme on campus, thus, it never happened. Woulda been cool though. Thats where the infamous "Buc Dome" nickname for our tiny b-ball gym originated.

yea, there are a few CSU fans out here. I was in the stands during that 05 win over Coastal. Never seen a better game. I am always optimistic about the teams chances every year and this year looks really good. a large number of seniors with excellent skills and leadership abilities will have a strong effect. as to facilities, I don't see anything happening for a couple of more years. you are so right about the heat in th e stands. my wife sits in the shade of the scoreboard. Re: Any Charleston Southern guys here?
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Coach Mills gets more out of less than just about any coach in the nation. How he is able to be competitive with bailing wire & duct tape is beyond me.
The sad news is that CSU has major financial issues that continue to dog the school as a whole. It would be awesome for the league if they could get an influx of cash.
Welcome to the board, by the way. There is a fairly strong representation of Big South posters on here and all over the web. And we Liberty guys are everywhere.

You can thank Al Parish for the delay in facility improvements. He gutted nearly 9 million dollars out the funds a good bit of that was slated to build the field house in the north endzone area. Takes awhile to recoup that much money.bigSfan89 wrote:yea, there are a few CSU fans out here. I was in the stands during that 05 win over Coastal. Never seen a better game.
