Why is georgia state in the CAA?

Why is Stony Brook in the Big South?
Why is Jacksonville State in the Ohio Valley?
What exactly is the footprint of the Pioneer league (which includes teams from California, to Florida, to Ohio)?
And IvyTalk might ask, why is Penn in the Ivy League?

Good questions! Seems like it would be simpler if they had picked a conf closer to them, i find it hard to believe they couldnt get in the BSC.
(also i find it hard to believe i misspelt Georgia!)

Atlanta market. To Please UNCW.
Also, anyone notice how regionalized conferences are not the future as seen by this summer's reallignment fiasco? Yeager might not have done a bad thing after all by spreading this conference out.

Re: Why is georgia state in the CAA?
Conferences are not set up strictly for one sport...or even sports...
Conferences sometimes look for academic-like partners...thus the Ivy...
Some are regional...some are based on a single sport, such as CAA football, which is a different animal (slightly) than the rest of the CAA...
But to your question about Georgia State...
The CAA was traditionally a more southern-based regional conference until several teams dropped out around 2000 when the Naval Academy, Richmond, Eastern Carolina and American left...the next year GaSt and a few others joined...

Re: Why is georgia state in the CAA?
Our previous Prez and AD got is into the Colonial pre-Football. This was even before the feasibility study in 2007. My understanding is that Patton (former GSU Prez) and Yeager (CAA Prez) are friends. Patton was anti-Football and the CAA is a great basketball league. Personally I think it isnt a great long term move. I know a lot has been talked about whether we want to move up to FBS or stay FCS. But either way we need to be in a conference that is regional. Those schools like Ga Southern, Samford, Furman actually have alumni here in Atlanta. As a gauge of what kind of difference that makes, we played Shorter which is 75 miles up I-75 in Rome, Ga. Their school has 3000 students. They had about 3k students and fans at the game.

Your map of the CAA is incorrect, if you are referring to CAA Football. You left out Maine, New Hampshire, UMass, Villanova and Richmond.

Re: Why is georgia state in the CAA?
Obviously was not since Georgia State, UNCW, ODU, GMU, NE, Drexel, VCU and Hofstra are not current members of CAA Football but were on the map. Georgia State and ODU will be soon though. The map is of the full-time members of the CAA.jrj1976urspider wrote:Your map of the CAA is incorrect, if you are referring to CAA Football. Re: Why is georgia state in the CAA?
I stand corrected.....Just a question here: What is the possibility that the CAA will go to an ALL SPORTS conference? If that was to happen, the CAA would have to "kick out" the following schools: Maine, New Hampshire, Massachesetts, Richmond and Villanova! Any thoughts on this? I'd like to hear some feedback on this.

Re: Why is georgia state in the CAA?
Little to no possibility of going to all sports conference - why would they do that anyway, what's the benefit?jrj1976urspider wrote:I stand corrected.....Just a question here: What is the possibility that the CAA will go to an ALL SPORTS conference?
