I wasn't ready to write the Apps off at halftime, but was darn close. Whether you are an App fan, a Moc fan, or a football fan, this was one helluva game. Glad I got to watch it!

I've learned time and time again never to doubt this team. However, I doubted them today a lot. Give me my crow head first.

I watched the whole game and it was everything that makes college football great. Appy showed a champions heart and the mocs showed that they have arrived as a real contender in the socon. Congrats to both teams.

Sounds to me like it's anybody's conference to win. From what I heard on the radio it sounded like Appy won off of sloppy offensive and special teams play by Chatty, and not stellar offensive play by Appy. Maybe it was opening game jitters and they'll get it together. But if not, then based on today, Appy will be lucky to finish in the top three in the conference. Props to Chatty for bringing it today!!

Eh, I think you got a little bit of a blurred view (at least in my opinion). App looked about as bad as they could in the first half. The defense was biting on the play action really badly, but didn't seem to do that in the second half. Offense wasn't a problem in the first, save for the two turnovers - which I think we won't see that same ball carrier again in that situation. Chatty was up big time for the game and executed as perfectly as any team could in the beginning. In fact, I haven't seen a team play that well in one half of football against the Apps since ECU.

The second half was a different story for the defense. We gave up a TD or two, but the line started getting pressure and special teams started hitting guys earlier in the return. And the offense was stellar in all but one of the drives in the half. Once Presley got in his rhythm and started looking for all of his receivers, UTC was in for it. I can think of at least 7 guys who had catches in the second half. At least 3 ball-carriers, too. App is still the team to beat.

I was going to write your post, but you beat me to it. App remains the team to beat in the SoCon. Chatty is the real deal, too.

App State lucky to finish in the top three? Yeah right man. Appalachian played about as bad in the first half as I've seen them play in about five or six years. They responded in the second half and made some big plays - they seized the momentum and showed some heart. Cadet's two turnovers and our secondary almost cost us this one. Not to mention RB Devon Moore and WR CoCo Hillary didn't play today. Our defense, especially the secondary has to get A LOT better and quick. Once the App D got pressure on Coleman consistently in the second half it was a different ball game. Chattanooga played a great game though except for the last quarter. They have a legit shot at finishing in the top three or four in the league this year but it will be interesting to see how they respond after this loss. Great win for the Mountaineers.

 You guys are so predictable! Keep on looking through those rose colored glasses. And while your at, learn to read. If not for poor special teams play by Chatty, you guys lose today. And if you bring that defense against the rest of the conference, you will lose a lot of games this season, and be lucky to finish in the top three. Ya'll looked bad. But I'm sure Moore will have that all worked out by the next game. Like I said, may just be first game jitters with a dose of "oh shit, Armanti isn't here"-itis. Personally, I would love to see a battle royale for the conference title. Is crAppy still the team to beat? Will they step on their collective dicks and struggle in conference? Is this the year Eloan gets the Appy monkey off their back? Has Chatty finally put together a team that can compete week to week for a top spot in the conference? I think it might be an exciting year in the SOCON.

You might have a point about ASU's secondary play which was disappointing today. However those that are hoping ASU's offense sans AE can't move the ball. Check the stats, almost 500 yards on offense. Note that UTC had a top 3 defense in the SoCon last year.

UTC is building a talented team and may have the best X and O coach in the conference. If UTC is playing Furman and it's tied going into the fourth it wouldn't be a difficult choice selected which coach I'd like to have on the sideline.

UTC is going to be a decent team. They are getting better so I would just be glad if I was ASU that they got a win.

ASU should be fine. I will say though that with Hillary and Moore out and the ends hurt the team should get better.

One thing from my initial observations, will break down the tape by Monday, is that DJ Smith is being overhyped. He is a solid player but had a bad game today. He looked very average. LeGree looked good in the second half but had a poor first half. Based on what I saw today LeGree would be a 7th-PFA while Smith is barely a free agent. I know they will pick it up though. LeGree always has slow starts. He should start hitting a groove by week five.

I agree with you on D.J. Smith. He did not have a good game today, as he finished the day with six tackles. Smith and LeGree will pick their game up, and hopefully the entire defense will do the same because for the majority of the game they were just going through the motions. App DE Lanston Tanyi missed today's game due to a toe injury, the word is that he will have surgery next week and could miss the entire season. :x

And if a frog had wings, he wouldn't bump his ass when he jumps. Or, if you prefer a more football-related analogy, if Michigan had betting special teams blocking in 2007, Corey Lynch wouldn't have blocked that FG.

That's why you play the game until the final whistle. Sure, the defense has a lot to work on, especially in the secondary. But (unlike many of my App brethren) I'm not ready to toss in the towel. And if UTC doesn't have a let down after a heartbreaker, they will be hard-pressed to finish outside of the top 3 in the league. I'll even go out on a limb and say that Coleman is the best QB in the SoCon this year, including that little cry-baby in Burlington.

Perhaps you're suffering from wishful thinking or jumping to conclusions (as are some ASU fans). Look, the simple fact is the SoCon belt still resides in Boone and someone will have to take it from ASU. I'm not saying ASU will win the SoCon this season, but someone will have to dethrone the champs. You're more than welcome to your opinion, but it's hard to determine where a team will be at the end of the season after the first game. We'll see in November if you're right, but as of September no SoCon team has beaten ASU in 21 tries. There's no "ifs" about that.

I for one must disagree, I don't want to see a wide-open SoCon battle...I like ASU going 8-0. :) You're right that it would have been harder for ASU to win without the gaffes by UTC. But, I wouldn't go as far to say ASU would have lost if not for the gaffes. ASU had some gaffes too, so it could be said UTC would have won because of those gaffes. The only thing I'll say is the game doesn't end until 00:00. UTC played great for 45 minutes, but for 15 minutes not so much. That, and the 3 UTC turnovers vs. the 2 ASU turnovers (3 if you count the turnover-on-downs) were the difference.

Wow, just wow, deathdealer  seems like all of you Vermin fans are predictable as well and are still hanging on to the 2005 season. if not for poor special teams play by Chatty? sure, they missed 3 xps, but we missed a fg too...they fumbled once on special teams, we fumbled twice. and lucky to finish top three? are you really Bobby Lamb?

first games are always hard because you don't know exactly what you've got until the game starts going. I'd rather have this win as a potential championship team than a blowout....this win gives our team confidence and I do believe the toughest team outside of Elon is off of our schedule....and we got the win. :thumb:

as much as it will pain you to admit it, we are still the team to beat....remember, in order to be the man, you have to beat the man....something you guys haven't done in a while, I might add

I've been saying that I thought Chatty was overhyped all off-season and I have to say I feel somewhat vindicated. I'm sorry, but when you make a 28-point fourth quarter comeback it just tells me one team just isn't playing up to what they are capable and that they are clearly the better team in the game. Kind of reminds me of GSU scoring 28 on Western Carolina in the fourth quarter to force OT in 2008.

Forget about Chatty possibly being a dark horse. If there is one SoCon team on the rise (and you can call me a homer if you want) it's Georgia Southern. The execution was very good considering it was the first game in the new (old) offense. In fact, it was much better than Georgia Tech's first game with the option against Jacksonville State where they lost 4 fumbles. We are already better on both offense and defense than we were at the end of last year. Don't be surprised to see GSU beat Elon in Statesboro in 3 weeks.

The one caveat is that GSU unequivocally must keep Jaybo Shaw and Robert Brown (true-freshman ƒullback that I think SoCon teams are going to hate) healthy.

If Chat can put together 4 qtrs of play like their first two quarters yesterday, they will be around until the end of the season.

If ASU can put together 4 qtrs like their last qtr, they won't lose.

On the other hand, the first half may have been the worse I have seen an ASU team. I think first game rustiness.

Chattanooga imploded. Part of that is what another poster said the difference between a team that expects to win and one that is still learning.

Nothing in that game changed my opinion of the Socon. ASU still on top, Chattanooga probably still in the middle but it is a much stronger middle than we have seen in the past.

PS, Pwns, you beat arguably the worst team in FCS by a lot. Something that about 80% of all FCS teams could do. You may be right in your statement but remember just how bad Savannah st is and has been.

Just like media a lot of people on here are jumping to a lot of conclusions based upon one game. Let's wait a couple more games before we"

crown ASU and UTC and the top two teams in the SoCon

dismiss UTC as a SoCon contender

dismiss ASU's defense

and my favorite so far, GSU as the dark horse after that impressive win vs. likely the worst FCS program in SSU.

I will stand by my first two posts. If the Mountainqueers pull it together then they will be fine, and sill win the conference, which I'm sure the coaches will be able to do. But if they bring that same level of play to the rest of the season, they will lose to Elon, Wofford, possibly Furman and Samford, maybe even GSU is they can get their offense firing on all cylinders. You might be able to pull that victory out of your asses against a team that imploded the way Chatty did yesterday, but you can't count on any of the other teams in the conference to fold in the fourth and give you the win. I hope your defensive secondary is as bad as they looked yesterday. But, I won't hold my breath. We'll see soon enough. I still see FU at 8-3 at the end of the season. I'd say 9-2 if we got lucky against either Elon or you guys, but the way Chatty played yesterday, I think we have a lot more to worry about than ya'll and Elon. That's a shitload of luck we'll need, and with Lamb at the helm we're already using up a big chunk of it every game. Like I said, it should be an exciting year. Let's play some games and see how it all shakes out, shall we?

Last year ASU had a game like this vs. Citadel and Wofford and agree they should have beaten them much more soundly, but that's what good teams do. Never quit and find a way to win.
