Gardner-Webb vs Akron

Post by EagleDawg »

Posted this under a different topic by accident so here's my 2nd attempt.

Not giving away any inside secrets here since the head coach stated all this info during the Big South Conference Coaches Teleconference yesterday morning but here are some of the details on the injury front.

1) Our 4 deep RB pool is severely hampered/depleted and we're only 1 week into the season. Starting RB Patrick Hall (leading 09 rusher and scorer of 12 tds) still bothered by high ankle sprain and didn't move very well in the early week practice session; primary back-up Kenny Little lost for the season with a multi-fractured collar bone; 3rd depth chart FR-RB DeJuan Blount had a breakout game in his 1st college rushing for over 130 yds and a TD but missed much time in camp and is still learning the whole offense/blitz pick-up schemes so play calling is somewhat limited; 4th depth chart FR-RB Nino Woolridge continues to be a question mark with a back injury and his status for this week is undetermined along with Patrick Hall.

2) Breaking in young QB's takes some time and plenty of patience. Due to RB inexperience/injury the playbook has been contracted so as not to put the young QB's under undue pressure from 6 or 7 men rush/blitz packages. Yet, the coaches know and want to get the ball in the receivers/TE playmakers hands more (T. Perry, M. Saunders, J. Patmon, J. Miller) and so would expect to see the ball in the air more than the 19 attempts from Game 1.

3) Defensively, the Dawgs must play with a tremendous amount of determination this weekend to slow up a BCS school's running game so that time of possession is not too unbalanced. The overall size and depth of a BCS school vs an FCS school can wear you down if you allow them to run the ball down your throat and maintain long drives.

4) Defensively, the Dawgs secondary must play well and not give up the big plays to keep the Dawgs in the game against the Zips.

This posters view is that the Dawgs must win the turnover battle, force the Zips 3 and out on at least 1/3 of their possessions, hold the Zips under 180 yds rushing and 350 total yards and score at least 24 points to have a shot at the upset. Weather forecast looks to be low 70's and partly cloudy so fatigue from depth differential shouldn't be influenced by hot, humid weather. Looking forward to the game in Akron's new InfoCision Stadium, hoping there's a big crowd and expecting a visit with some fellow dads to the Winking Lizard Tavern for a few cold beverages.

The Cats it's pretty obvious you can't read a damn lick or if you could you would have noted that I stated that GWU needed to score 24 points to have a shot at an upset along with several other key stats not that they would score 24 points. What I can keenly recall about your ability to prognosticate is that you were damn certain that WCU would handle GWU last fall and your prognostication was 100% wrong. As a matter of recollection, the Cats first half last season against GWU was worse than either half of GWU's performance last week against Brevard College. I'm certain you'll replicate your prior prognostication on next week's rematch between the Cats and Dawgs and I look forward to the chance for you to yet again be proved wrong.

Maybe it's you that can't read a damn lick.... I think I correctly quoted what you said....

My point still stands, you still only scored 28 points against a D2 team. Even in fantasy land, even IF you could hypothetically score 24 points against Akron, you would not have a shot at the upset, because Akron scores considerably more than 24 points against the bulldog defense.

As far as next weeks game goes, I'm sure the Catamounts will have a happy ride home from Boiling Springs.

As I stated you would be proven wrong again and just so you know I am sitting here smiling like a mule eating saw briers. GWU (FCS) 38 - Akron (BCS) 37, Running Bulldogs Win; Tusculum (D2) 54 - Western Carolina (FCS) 30, Cats Lose. No fantasy, no hypothetical, just a win on the road with several missing key players for G-Dubb and a loss at home for the Cats giving up 54 points against a D2.

As far as happy rides home, how was the one last night???

1st - congrats on the win, and I'm serious.

2d - obvioulsy the Catamounts can't even beat a D2 team (and that's embarrassing to no end), so you have nothing to worry about in Boiling Springs next Saturday. Maybe with enough asskickings Wagner will hire a new offensive coordinator (one with some experience, not a grad student) and a couple of guys that know how to defend against the pass.

Good Luck the rest of the season.

The Cats - Thanks for the congrats to G-Dubb and GWU better worry about Saturday. Teams that don't worry, don't focus, don't think the opponent can lay an L on you is a team that is set up to be humbled. G-Dubb played Akron extremely hard, maintained their poise, believed they were gonna win and yet were the beneficiary of some key mistakes by Akron down the stretch. In the last 3 minutes the Zips had a key penalty, key fumble, missed FG and in the OT a blocked XP. Not to say that G-Dubb didn't have a hand in it but when that many things in such a short time period break your way, there's a bit of destiny to it too IMO. Even with WCU's struggles, we hope you guys bring more than just a few fans to the game, I've seen too much football to not expect a hard fought contest.
