The Similarities Between Tressel/Wolford in Year 1

Post by guinzone »

The first year of Jim Tressel and Eric Wolford have some close similarities. Let's hope the future under Wolford follows the same path Tressel took us on in the 90s!

And those three losses were to:
-vs NDSU 34-29. We went up 29-28 with 50+ seconds left, only to give up the lead with 30+ seconds left after NDSU drove down the field in 3 plays for a TD.

-at WIU 40-38. We went up 38-34 with 5 minutes left and lost the lead on a Barr-to-Senatus pass where Senatus looked like Michael Crabtree as he somehow found his way into the endzone with 60 seconds left.

-vs UNI 34-30. We went up 30-27 with less than 3 minutes left, only to have a squib kick returned to our 20 yard line. A play later they scored to make it 34-30 with 2:08 left.

Our other two league losses were @ MSU where we blew a 17 point lead and @ SDSU where we only had a 2 point lead, that is the only one we really did not play good enough to win.

I agree YSU looks good for the future. Was yesterday a pretty normal day for your offense, or did they throw a lot of new wrinkles at us?

so, basically your defense sucks.

I just don't get the YSU love affair with Wolford. He could end up being great, but its a little early to be comparing him to Tressel. To this point he reminds me of Tim Brewster (formerly of MInnesota), in that he talks a big game and can supposedly recruit. Brewster went 1-11 in his first year, a lot of the losses we close games. Brewsters problem was the defense was terrible in his first year, and the offense looked promising with some young talent. Sounds familiar.

Until Wolford starts winning games, I'd be cautious with coaches who sound like used car salesmen.

Cause the guy can recruit. We hired him December 15th and he somehow managed to put together a 24 person recruiting class in 45 days. He brought numerous 4-5 star's to Illinois and South Carolina in his time at those schools as well.

We have already offered 66 kids for the 2011 class with 7 commits thus far; although we cannot seem to figure out who the 7th commit is because the paper reported it and it it not online just yet.
