Congrats on the win WIU!

Solid win, but the big game is next weekend. I plan on making the 12-13 hour trek out to NC. Anything special I should know about the campus or stadium in Boone?Skjellyfetti wrote:WIU intercepts the ball on the goaline to seal the win.

I bet this guy has never been to Boone in his life. Just butthurt over the 2007 whipping.jd of de wrote: Leave the women and children at home.
Is there anything in particular you were wondering about the town or the campus? My suggestion would be to stay as close to King Street as possible. That's the main street through downtown... lots of restaurants, bars, etc. It would also be a short walk to the stadium. For nightlife I recommend Cafe Portofino's for pool/darts, Murphy's, and Town Tavern is a new sports bar that I've only been to once after the Wofford game... but it was a pretty good time. There will be tailgating all over the place... and since WIU is more of a curiosity than a hated conference rival I'm sure you'll be welcomed about everywhere you go.
Also, as long as the weather isn't nasty... you should take a scenic drive down the Blue Ridge Parkway at some point on your trip. If it's foggy or icy... stay away! Get on the parkway either on 221 towards Blowing Rock and drive South towards Asheville. Lots of spectacular views and make sure you go far enough to cross the Linn Cove Viaduct before you turn around.

First off, thanks for all the info! And secondly I guess I was just wondering about the basics (hotels, local places to eat, etc.). I really have no idea how big of a city it is and what the hotels in the area look, since I don’t really want to stay in “Motel Joe” or some rundown place like that. But I’m sure I can find all of that with a few minutes of research online.
Of course, all of this is contingent on the situation with my on again-off again girlfriend. Her birthday is the 3rd so I’m going to try to convince her that a trip to NC with a little shopping would do justice. Still trying how to figure out how to sneak that football game in there, haha.

For a specific hotel I'd say the Sleep Inn. It's nice enough and walking distance to everything in the heart of Boone (parking is a bitch. On gameday it's impossible). Boone is a small little mountain town. Most everything is on King Street. Some of my favorite places to eat are Black Cat Burrito, Capone's (pizza), Our Daily Bread (sandwiches and such), and Boone Drug (old timey drug store with good lunch food).WIU2013 wrote:First off, thanks for all the info! There's a lot of shopping around. King Street in Boone has a lot of little shops. Blowing Rock a little down 221 is another small mountain town with a lot of shops on the main street and also some factory outlets on the Boone side of Blowing Rock with J. Crew, Polo, Banana Republic, etc. Also, Blowing Rock has one of my favorite places to eat... Woodland's Barbecue. If you go there try Ollie's Ribs.WIU2013 wrote:Of course, all of this is contingent on the situation with my on again-off again girlfriend. PM me, KYjelly, or Appaholic and we'll keep you out of the shitholes. I hope you'll find Boone to be a great gameday environment, and I'll certainly provide refreshments assuming I can find a place to park.WIU2013 wrote:First off, thanks for all the info! Thanks. Once I figure out for sure if I'm going I'll try to get more things figured out. If I don't go with Meghan it'll be the guys, but they might not want to go since we're going to the Bears game tomorrow.

WIU2013 - Congratulations on the win yesterday. Not to take anything away from your victory at all, but we really stunk it up yesterday. 5 turnovers in the redzone ain't gonna win any games!! Especially against a team like yours. The loss would have been easier to take if we played like we have been the past few weeks. I have no excuses as to what the heck happened out there . Also, your fans were very gracious and complimentary of our campus and stadium.
Boone is beautiful this time of the year and the ride down the parkway is definitely well worth it. I wish I was getting the chance to see it next weekend. Their game day atmosphere around the campus and inside the stadium is second to none so be prepared!!
Good luck to y'all and, who knows.....maybe we will see y'all again someday!

Thanks,
And to your other points, CCU outplayed Western last Saturday. You guys really should have won the game if not for some really poor QB play. We should know a little something about that out here in Macomb (1-10 w/ no Matt Barr last year, 8-4 w/ Barr this year). I've heard great things about the campus and set-up from people that went to the game. Good luck to you guys next season!

Re: The Nickname game! CCU vs. WIU
I agree 100% with that. WIU played well but CCU played better. I was pissed at MacDowell while I was leaving the stadium Saturday but if it wasn't for his good play the previous weeks, we wouldn't have been in the playoffs.WIU2013 wrote:CCU outplayed Western last Saturday. Good Luck in Boone!
