You'd also have to count Cal Poly's 1980 D-II title as a I-AA/FCS title (even though Boise State won the I-AA title). Right?

Cal Poly must have shared the National Championship that year with Elon...& Georgia too, I think....

The '78 and '79 I-AA playoffs consisted on just FOUR teams each year.. the DII playoffs.. which contained most of the schools that would later become part of I-AA.. consisted of sixteen teams. Four vs sixteen.. wonder who had the easier road to a title???

But I think what most of the Delaware fans were saying is that we've played (to the utmost of our ability to do so - see 78-79 for the transition asterix) at the level just below the big guys since before WWII.

Meanwhile Delaware went 94-23-1 with 3 championships. Guess you can't balme the Appy boys for trying to prtend that football records didn't count unitl the advent of I-AA.

The SWAC and MEAC were two of the strongest conferences in I-AA in 1979. You tell me which was better.
