We'll always get up for our in state rivals. We still need to prove ourselves in the conference before talking rivaly. Too bad our most hated rival, doesn't have a Football team.∞∞∞ wrote:CAA? UD vs. Villanova, W&M vs. UR.
ODU vs. JMU is gonna be the best one though.

Yeah. I don't think ANYONE in the Big Sky has a "rivalry" with the Bungles. A "rivalry" implies that both teams win every once in a while.Wildcat Ryan wrote:Weber State/Idaho State..........................

Furman vs. GSU is one of the top rivalries no doubt. Very few teams have played each other with more on the line through the years- 2 times in the title game, once in the semis, several more for conference titles.

Re: Rivalries
Richmond's longest rivalry is with the Indians of William and Mary. Over the last eight or so years, UR's most intense rivalry is JMU. Lots of venum and verbal smack between the two schools' fans prior to each battle!
Re: Rivalries
Any of the games involving USD, UND, SDSU & NDSU. Obviously with USD & UND transitioning to FCS at the same time as did SDSU & NDSU, the most recent years have been limited to USD vs UND & SDSU vs NDSU.
USD vs UND has a long history and at one time they used to play for the Sitting Bull trophy, which several years ago was featured in Sports Illustrated.
With USD joining the MVFC in 2012, they will resume the games against both SDSU & NDSU. I would suggest that the game in November, 2012 between the Yotes and the Rabbits would be an obvious choice for great 2012 matchups.
I am guessing 2 to 4 years down the road, UND & NDSU will play again which would also be an obvious choice for a great matchup (and will also likely overload any message board dealing with FCS football)

Re: Rivalries
Furman has a few.
Furman - ASU is probably one of the least known and the last several years haven't done much to help that. But prior to that I think there was something like 20 straight games that we settled by less than 5 points. Furman dominated early in the series, ASU in the later part.
As blueballs mention there is a particularly nasty dislike between Furman and GSU. We haven't played that many times but I can't think of two schools that are this close geographically that played for a national championship the first two times they played. My guess is after ASU's run that they have become a lot more important for the GSU fans, but considering the history of the Furman GSU games each teams fans will always think of the other team while we are sitting on a toilet dumping out one of their mascots.
For old timers, probably the Citadel. Not sure how it compares with El Cid's VMI rivalry which I know is intense. But this one has all the requirements for grade A hatred. Military vs liberal arts. Public (kinda sorta) versus private. Upstate - low country. Secular - religious (formerly). Bellhops versus hotel guests It has been said before, but check out some of Pat Conroy's books on this one. Lots of good stories, some yarns, some true. horse Murders, Campus invasions.ambushes. This rivalry has it all.
It is also very lopsided in Furman's favor which makes it even better.
Future rival - Wofford. I know Wofford hates us with a passion and I think Furman is starting to get in the spirit since we haven't faired very well against them. But the combination of Woffords NAIA past and that cute little dawg mascot makes them hard to hate.
Give it another 10 years and it will be there. Two very similar schools 40 miles apart. It just has to happen.

RIVALRIES:
Used to be LENOIR RHYNE back in the time before Sports Center, and ESP N.
Then Daniel Boone died and
APP STATE's used to be WESTERN CAROLINA , but like someone said, the other team has to win once in a while to make it a rivalry. Have been wanting them to do better at football for forty years now.
Then APP STATE's Big Rival was FURMAN , but like someone said, the other team has to win once in a while to make it a rivalry. Just kidding, but has been pretty one sided in Appalachian's favor the last many years. Used to be one of the closest games imaginable each year.
Then GEORGIA SOUTHERN, and they win often enough for it to be a real rivalry. Funny thing though, I always wish them the best against other teams. Always want them to have a great record when we face them.
In a way JAMES MADISON is a Rival, but we just don't play enough games to count it as a rivalry. Never will forget us having about seven players hurt the last minute or two of a game and their fans booing because they thought we were trying to stop the clock, but about four of them had to have operations. Probably good that we do not play each year because you could seriously predict, "There is going to be blood."

I'd like to see JMU vs. LU become a really strong OOC rivalry. Close traveling distance plus a very strong fan base from both schools would make for a great rivalry. Don't think JMU will continue the series after 2012 though. Really looking forward to Sept 17.
Re: Rivalries
NDSU, SDSU and USD have long histories with UNI going back the early days of Iowa Teachers College. I think the overall for NDSU is 18-24 but Im not sure. Its about the same with SDSU and USD.

Ditto for that trip down to Winston-Salem (at least, until Wake Forest finally chickened-out). Wake can schedule the likes of Elon, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian and even Northern Illinois, but want nothing to do with App on their home field. Think it has something to do with spanking their arse and bringing more fans than they could draw at their own home field?
BUT ... it's The Vermin. We need to correct that 17-21-3 so that I may die at peace.
And I suspect the Furple could easily be ranked (and 5-0) going into The Stink this year. Could they both lose?

As for the UxD's and the xDSU's they don't play each other, other than the marker game right now. NDSU/UND could be one, as could USD/SDSU. However, right now there is no steam behind them. Nothing to write about...With USD joining the MVFC there will likely be....but right now I'm focusing on active rivals.
I'd also like to keep it to your schools "top" rival, which will help me from using schools more than once - unless it is a heated rivalry (like NDSU/UND or SDSU/USD could be.)
Also, I'd prefer if both sides saw it as a rivalry. I know a lot of schools (YSU, NDSU, MSU, ISUr, maybe SDSU) think UNI is their "rival", yet the UNI fan base-and team for that matter-don't see them as a true rival....or even a team of true significance other than being "another conference victim...again check the siggy.... SIU is the only school that UNI fans, coaches, and players, would agree could be considered a rivalry.
Re: Rivalries
I have to disagree a bit with you Clenz, there's plenty to write about when talking about NDSU and UND, it just doesn't happen on the field, more of a cold war type of rivalry. But for what you are looking for, yes, there really isn't much to say. From this Bison fan point of view, SDSU is our main game and I don't think most Bison fans consider UNI a rivalry at this point, a big game yes but not a rivalry. I think it's pretty clear the team and coaches don't care a lot for each other but I wouldn't go so far as to call it a rivalry game. I do think it's funny that UNI fans such as yourself are still up in arms because the Bison were voted MVFC favorites their first year in the league and yes we all know how that turned out. It's not like the team had anything to do with the poll, but it's as clear as day it still rubs some of the UNI fans the wrong way and it probably doesn't help NDSU has a few over the top fans on this site and others that just add fuel to that fire. Oh well, looking forward to football season, will we see you in Fargo this fall?clenz wrote:Check the siggy....JBB wrote:NDSU, SDSU and USD have long histories with UNI going back the early days of Iowa Teachers College.
