When you talk UND and NDSU and football, all you have is the past because they do not play in the present. I can see where JBB would not want to talk about the past because UND has owned NDSU in football and the numbers prove it.

UND 62 NDSU 45 and 3 ties.

Last 11 meetings UND 9 NDSU 2:

2003: 28-21 UND
2002: 12-6 UND
2001: 19-7 UND
2000: 16-13 NDSU
1999: 13-10 UND
1998: 39-25 UND
1997: 31-10 NDSU
1996: 33-19 UND
1995: 21-7 UND
1994: 14-7 UND
1993: 22-21 UND

 :D  :D  :D  :D  :D

Wrong (shocker).
In San Diego, the SDSU issue previously drew protest from racial and ethnic groups, including the Native American Student Alliance. The school conducted a review in 2000 that resulted in its abandoning its "Monty Montezuma" mascot, considered by some to be too cartoonish and demeaning to mesoamerican culture.
However, SDSU won the protest and bs concerns because:
"As I mentioned in my letter of January 3, 2003, the Aztecs are not a Native American or American Indian culture," Weber wrote. "However, the Aztecs are central to the cultural heritage of Mexico."
http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/az ... scots.html

So basically it's ok to offend "racial" and "cultural" groups that aren't from/live/born in the US. Maybe this is how Notre Dame gets by?

Well, glad to see that they're looking to put this issue behind them......I didn't agree with the name change being forced on them, but if UND was to go forward at all in Division I athletics, this had to happen. I think the turning point may have been when the Big Sky finally chimed in and expressed some concerns about the on-going issue. Now I guess the big question is what will the new nickname be? Anyone know what the early favorites are?

Thanks for the D2 history lesson slo-stang but that is all ancient history. Remeber if you believe in the D2 stats and NDSU its also important to state the entire unparalleled success story of the BISON:
THE NDSU BISON ARE GREATEST DYNASTY IN D2 FOOTBALL HISTORY DOMINATING THE NCC WITH THE MOST TITLES AND DOMINATING THE NATION WITH AN UNPRECEDENTED 8 NATIONAL TITLES. NO PROGRAM IN HISTORY HAS BEEN AS SUCCESSFUL AS NDSU.
I dont recall if cal poly was ever good enough to get to a national championship game. I dont think so. At least in all the times NDSU went to the title game cal poly wasnt there.

I think the Big Sky stepping in was the last push for the change. When they weighed in, I knew it was done. Well, I actually I had written it off last year, but kept my hopes that it could stay somehow.

As far as the new nickname, I did post a couple of links for the names that have been discussed in the past on page 1 of this thread. Unfortunately, some conglomerate has been compounding something in his pants the past 24 hours and the links were buried.

All of the info about the name from Sioux fans perspective is here.... http://forum.siouxsports.com/forum/2-sioux-name/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There have been some bison fans that have always had this obsession with UND. The fact that UND got the Big Sky invite really stoked the fire.

No doubt that NDSU had a storied DII football history. One full of great sucess and many, many losses to their biggest rival. I can see why you wish they stayed in DII. It looks like you are worried that history will repeat and they will once again dominate NDSU in football. I could see where it would be tough to have all that sucess and yet lose the last 9 of 11 games against your biggest rival. I imagine it took some ot the shine off all those trophies.

Cal Poly was not only good enough to get to the title game, they won it. Cal Poly won the 1980 DII National Championship. BTW, they beat Boise State that year. Boise State was the 1980 I-AA National Champions.

The marquee school from North Dakota has 7 D-I National Championships in ONE SPORT !!!

Out west, the only school from the Dakotas that has any profile is UND, as they are the only one playing in front of a national TV audience.

On the other hand, that second-tier state school is really good if "good" is defined as fumbling away possession on potential game-tying TDs before crossing the goalline.
UND is in the Big Sky. Good for them. They had 22 million TV screens and the most recognizable logo in the world long before the BSC fell on its face with the UND/USD deal. Let me know how big an audience UND football is able to grab on that national network!! Do we get it here in North Dakota?

UND is no longer in the Dakotas. They quit in 2003. Its all about the Dakota Big 3 in North and South Dakota. UND is just another OOC game for the Big 3.

UND games are regularly on one of the Fox Sports channels, on my TV it is Comcast 414. I know Comcast does not offer a consistent channel lineup from market-to-market, so I have no idea what channel it would be outside of Portland. This is a national network, so they get coverage. How much viewership do they get? Who knows, probably not much... but what FCS program does get much viewership?

And as mentioned before, they have a dominant national hockey program that also airs regularly. They made by far the most sense of any school from that area for the Big Sky, and the conference went out and got them. No offense to USD, but they don't offer that at all. Nor does SDSU or NDSU.

Plus...who will stick up for the Nakota...what if the Indian horse, which was mistreaded if I'm thinking of the right horse, for much of the 1900's, doesn't want to be used as a mascot?

I'd go for no nickname. People aren't going to buy into what ever bullshit name they come up with anyway. The only way to get people to stop wearing Sioux shirts and jerseys is to wait for them to all be worn out to the point of having to be thrown away.

It would be stupid to go by Rough Riders or Calvary, then have 98% of your fan base in Sioux shirts/hats/shorts

Go by just THE University of North Dakota, and the THE like The Citadel did. It's a nice little jab at NDSU as well. Pronounce it THEE not the Americanized bastardization of it...

Most of those are all in the running for the trophy name for the Dakota Big 3: NDSU, SDSU and USD. The trophy of course represents the Football Championship of the Dakotas. NDSU, SDSU and USD compete for it annually. The big game in the series is of course between the Mighty Land Grants, the biggest schools in the Dakotas, NDSU and SDSU.

At the time NDSU/SDSU were turned down for the Big Sky there was disappointment. This was all around the time UND had their hissy fit and stopped playing Dakota Teams, 2003 or 04 I think. They had assured the NCC they were committed to D2. Well after they reniged on that and quit they were very happy to take the place of the Mighty Dakota Land Grants in the GWC, created by NDSU/SDSU and the other teams.

The BSC started to get a little worried about their future and tried to bulk up to 14. The MVFC/Summit leagues swooped and picked up USD, the school of their choice, but no invitation was extended to UND from the MVFC and all site visits and associations with UND and Summit were withdrawn by the Summit.

USD, NDSU and SDSU did not want any further associations with UND after the experience in the NCC and of course their strange behavior folling the announcement of Decision 1 by NDSU. They were ablt to use the situation to their advantage. UND went west and the Big 3 remained united in the Dakotas, the MVFC and the Summit.

UND will come over to them MVFC/Summit at the drop of hat if the opportunity arises. But I will have to admit that the BSC was sure fortunate to pick up UND at least. They will be the top program in the conference because they have 8 national championships in one D1 sport, they have a winning record against NDSU, they have (had) the most reconizable logo in sports around the world, they are just a hop/skip/jump from the rest of the conference, they have whinny small minded fans and have a huge football stadium seating 12,000 with an impressive 8,000 average What a break for the Big Sky! :thumb:

I live in central Minnesota and cant get UND hockey. We get Gopher Hockey. I can watch some basketball but UNDs basketball team is currently just as bad as football. I dont like basketball enough to sit through that, but the last 3 or 4 years of UND football have sure been enjoyable!

Ps. Roughriders is currently the top choice for the Dakota Big 3 Championship football trophy here in the Dakotas. These should be good games for UND fans to watch as they are waiting for their games to start sometime after 10PM. 8-)

Yes. You're CLEARLY a vastly superior team to UND. How quickly delusional NDSU fans forget that they are just one year removed from 3-8.

NDSU was playing a full intra-divisional schedule. No D2 or NAIA. UND was playing a truckload of NAIA and D2 teams. I posted this earlier but UND has had a very weak schedule. They even lost to an NAIA team. This year they have 4 or 5 lower division games. Dont worry though they will brag about it like it was a typical BSC schedule just like you are bragging for them now.

Out of the 15 UND wins you listed above very few are actual FCS games. NDSUs wins include BCS teams (2), FBS teams (3), Big Sky Conference Champions (1) and of course lots of wins in the MVFC and dont forget GSU.

Yeah....NDSU has loaded it's schedule with teams that are world beaters...and would never loose to a D2 school.

Wait, most of these are glorified D2/D3 schools
