JMU Sells Out Two Games
JMU Sells Out Two Games
According to the Twitter, Homecoming and Family Weekend are sold out...
I have to admit I'm a little surprised. I wasn't sure what the demand was, but I guess the athletic department had an idea.
Would be nice if we could consistently sell these two weekends out and throw another one in there every now and then...
BTW, I know that selling out two games is normally not thread-worthy, but there was some discussion on another thread about this topic and I'm too lazy to pull that up...so there.
EDIT: Here's the web article...says that only 1,500 are left for home opener and they expect capacity crowds at all games...really??

New renovated stadium, I expect people are gonna want to go just to see the new renovations plus the game obviously.

I'll have to say that I'm pretty surprised by it. I was thinking closer to 20K all season. I had no idea. I'm glad I was wrong on this one.
One thing to consider, these numbers include 7500 student tickets. Students need to get to the game!

Re: JMU Sells Out Two Games
If I've heard correctly ... this is based on 26,900 capacity ...
Student allotment has always been 5,000 and always sold out ... they bumped it to 8,000 so it will be interesting to see how many more students actually show up ...
That being said, subtracting the 8,000 student allotment, a "sellout" would be 18,900 paying attendees. So right now JMU has sold 18,900 tickets for Homecoming and Family weekend ... plus (apparently) 17,400 for the opener ... and I've been told that the only game not very close to a sellout is Maine (sandwiched between Homecoming and Parents weekend in a 3-game homestand in early October) ... which I've been told has just 3,000 tickets remaining ... so 15,900 for Maine sold so far ... meaning Rhode Island in Nov. has sold at least 16,000 ... then you add in the 5-8k for students and you're averaging at least 21k a game ... plus 27k for the two sellouts and soon to be third sellout for the opener ...I'm pleasantly surprised!
*Edit* ...not to mention the fact that Maine is over a month away, and RI in November is over two months away with plenty of time to sell those remaining tickets!

That would be phenomenal if JMU brought 25k to WVU. But don't think that is realistic.JMUpurplehazed wrote:Mickey was hand delivering season tickets purchased today![]()

09' JMU @ MD, coming off of a semi final season, had about 5k JMU fans (Had sold about 1500 of 2500 alottment 3 weeks out, don't think quite sold the full 2500. Just as many probably bought off of places like were walkups & had bought off of places like Stubhub, etc). Many of these alums who attended are the casual type who treated this as as an event, going because JMU was playing a big ACC school in the DC area. MD gets far more media coverage in the DC area than WVU. JMU students & alums in the DC area have far more family members, friends, neighbors, & co-workers that go/went to MD than WVU.
Excitement generated by the VT win, the new JMU stadium and Fed Ex> Byrd Stadium is going to bring out a huge increase in JMU fans. But it isn't going to turn 5k into 25k.
The JMU fans away attendance record of 7-8k (Chatty, UR 08') will be smashed, but me thinks its going to be in the area of 15k. We've had this discussion over on the CAAZone. There are those who have this thought that its going to be 25-30k, and who are going to be disappointed and critical if its "only" around 15k. 15k would still be something to be very excited about.

Just saw a report on the CAAZone that one of the ticket guys said on the radio tonight that only 1,500 tickets remain for the opener ... and get this ... 6,500 of the 7,500 student tickets have been claimed with 10 days to go ... woof89Hen wrote:JMUDuke2002 wrote:One thing to consider, these numbers include 7500 student tickets. Like was previously stated, prior to this year student tickets were capped at 5,000 so it has been hard to tell how much more interest there is in the student body in terms of butts in the seat ... so 6,500 with 10 days to go is pretty damn impressive. What do other schools typically draw from their students? JMU probably has the largest student support in FCS and they stick us right behind the visiting team ... no wonder the atmosphere is so great!

Right now it's just under 19k. For the Montana semifinal I heard we had 7.5-8k students there for that one out of about 18k, so it'll be interesting to see if we can beat that at some point for a regular season game.Grizalltheway wrote:How big is the total student body?

We have 15k total students, and I think our allotment is between 3-4k. Certain games (Homecoming and Griz/cat) sell out by the Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning before the game, and I think we could get at least 6k for those games.DukeJack wrote:Right now it's just under 19k. Re: JMU Sells Out Two Games
I finally got an answer to the capacity question and stand corrected ... the total seating capacity for the stadium is 24,900 ... aka 25k ... but the stadium can fit up to 27k if need be ... so a sellout is 24,900 ... not the 26,900 I stated earlier.

24,900 doesn't even jive with what JMU has reported each section to be:JmuSkinsfan wrote:I finally got an answer to the capacity question and stand corrected ... the total seating capacity for the stadium is 24,900 ... aka 25k ... but the stadium can fit up to 27k if need be ... so a sellout is 24,900 ... not the 26,900 I stated earlier.
Old side: Something like 6200 or 6400 (always has been)
New side lower 6200/6400 + about 1,000 last yr
New side upper 9100 (RTD article)
New endzone: 4200 (RTD article)
= about 26.5-27k.
So what do they mean by "can fit"? Is that 2k seats that won't be used? SRO?

What is your makeup of students? I think UD's biggest problem is that the out of state students outnumber the in-state students by quite a bit. Too many Jersey and NY kids that never gave a shit about Delaware.JmuSkinsfan wrote:Just saw a report on the CAAZone that one of the ticket guys said on the radio tonight that only 1,500 tickets remain for the opener ... and get this ... 6,500 of the 7,500 student tickets have been claimed with 10 days to go ... woof

They don't care about Delaware football and maybe grew up not know who the hell JMU, W&M, Richmond, UNH, etc... are. I-AA football just doesn't excite them and neither do the opponents. I grew up in Delaware and knew all of the Hens opponents. I went to every home game while I was at UD (and quite a few road games).andy7171 wrote:What's your point about where the kids come from? Put it this way Andy: less than 30% of Delaware's students are from Delaware. How many other schools in the CAA have such a low number? Villanova maybe?

I tend to agree. I don't know why it matters where they come from. They should still support their team. They are on-campus, so go to a game.andy7171 wrote:What's your point about where the kids come from? It's their school of choice.89Hen wrote: What is your makeup of students? But, having said that, JMU is 70% in-state, which I believe does help when we are playing WM and soon ODU. Otherwise, we play few other in-state schools. The BB games between in-state schools seem to have the largest crowds, so I guess it does helps then.

Yeah, but how many of us went to I-AA schools without knowing anything about the football team. I'm one. JMU was average to poor when I attended. I didn't even know they had a football team until I showed up on campus for my tour. It didn't stop me from going to every game while I was in college.89Hen wrote:They don't care about Delaware football and maybe grew up not know who the hell JMU, W&M, Richmond, UNH, etc... are. I think when you are talking BCS schools, a kid might pick it because of football. But outside of that arena, we all pick our schools based on academics, campus life, affordability etc.... So, this idea that they are out of state doesn't make too much sense to me, especially at a program like Delaware. I think it may have more to do with you are pulling more kids from the Northeast which, largely, doesn't give a sh*t about college football anyway. They are into the Iggles, Giants, Pats, Sox, Yankees...the pros.

Most of our campus lives within an hour or two of their home as well. Perhaps JMU's more austere setting holds people's interest more? I dunno. UD's campus is right on I-95 and you can be anywhere from NYC to Philly to Baltimore to Washington DC to the ocean to skiing in under two hours. Just thinking out loud.
