Clemson 35, Wofford 27

Post by woffordgrad94 »

We went up to Clemson and almost pulled it off. It was a good performance for the Terriers. We just came up a bit short. Ironically, I'm a lot happier after a LOSS today than I was after a WIN (against Presbyterian) last week.

On the other side of the coin, I can't say I'm very optimistic about the Tigers' chances the next 3 weeks against Auburn, Florida State, and Virginia Tech.

The Terriers are my secondary team, and I'm disappointed....not with the effort, but that they couldn't shut those arrogant bastards up. At least now they have to try to figure out why a 1500 student college damn near beat them at their place.

There was a WoCo guy next to me downtown G'Ville tonight and I walked over to tell him the same. That being said, I'll pull for you until ASU visits Sparklecity. :thumb:

Was going to give my Tiger diehard friend a jab but then remembered what happened to us last week so I let him slide. ;) Great game!

Well G8, I can honestly tell you that I would like App State a lot more if you didn't dominate the SoCon, and once we beat you in sparkle city in 3 weeks I'll pull for yall more often :D anyway, I was really impressed today. Our offense is legit. 399 yards of offense including 270 rush yards against a DL that was probably 3 or 4 inches taller and 20 or 30 pounds heavier on average. We also sacked them 4 times, with their OL probably even bigger in comparison to us. I'm only slightly concerned with our defense as they gave up 466 yards and about 180 rush yards (76 of which were on one rush) because Clemson had a clear size and SPEED advantage on us. We'll see how good our defense really is against Samford. I was at the game, we had 2 sections full and we were loud throughout. We left the wine and cheese at home. Let's hope we do the same throughout the rest of the season and support our terriers. I am proud to be a terrier. You have absolutely no clue how sweet it was to answer every score they had in the first half , and after all the dipsh*t Clemson fans predicting 60-13 scores with the 13 coming in garbage time, scoring on the first possession after a stand on 4th down. The only thing that would have made it better would have been if we had one. It's still great to be a terrier1

I was following that game because the Summerall Guards performed at halftime in the game (guess clempson gave up on their own ROTC drill).

Loved seeing you guys put the fear in those people. I might dislike USC and FSU more than Clem's Son, but it is really a close race.

yeah, we should have won the game. just watched it again on espn3 and we made some critical mistakes in untimely situations that definitely cost us the game. but i am still proud of the heart our guys showed on the field. they never give up in any game. now we use video as a learning tool for rest of season cause mistakes like some of those would have cost us a few close games last year. can't let that happen this yr!!!

thanks for all the compliments guys!

I was a great game to watch as an 'indifferent' observer but wrenching as a SoCon fan - I loved the fake punt.

It seemed yah just kinda ran outa steam in the second half and couldn't get in the end zone.

That's when the bench depth begins to kick in...those extra schollies really pay off.

I understand what you are saying but I'm not a big believer in the scholarship argument.

I think Clempson was smart enough (one of the few times you will find Clempson and smart in the same sentence) to adjust to the misdirection, cross-blocking, traps, etc. Ayers couldn't reach into his bag of tricks and find a couple more big plays or dog Clempson into another turnover or two.

The only issue I really had was I was hoping Ayers would have let some air out of the ball, played more keep-away and tried to limit possessions/big plays - whenever I was paying attention it seemed they would snap the ball with 15 seconds on the play clock. They did a good job with clock management - I just felt they could have done a bit better.

Otherwise - Wofford was there. A handful of plays made the difference in the game.

Really the difference was A) Clemson had wayyyyyyyy better athletes; I don't expect offenses to torch us so badly in the secondary this year. There were a lot of plays where their defensive ends just made damn good tackles and grabs and disruptions, I don't think we'll see any Defensive ends that good this year. As I've said before, our guys in the trenches were warriors. They outwieghed us by 30 pounds and were 3 inches taller across the board on the interior line across the board on defense and offense. B) we most certainly have not used our entire playbook. We only run one play from the pistol it seems and majority of our plays come from the flexbone whereas in years past we mostly use the shotgun and or pistol.

yeah, you're right on that one......but honestly, I think we'll do better this year in terms of guarding him. I don't know why we use our 5 foot 8 guys to cover a 6 foot 5 receiver when we have a couple 6' 3 defensive backs

If Sat was any indication I don't think the 'formation' will jump start your passing game.

We've passed for an average of 150 yards the last 2 games which is pretty good for an option team....I don't know what you're getting at with that one

LOL the students in the upper right of the picture summarize Wofford nicely.

Is that the Ancient and Benevolent Order of Balls and Shaft, cheering their mighty Terriers to victory? I think I see David Spade!

Dude. Reality check. Wofford completed 2 passes against Clempson. On the first there wasn't a DB within 15 yds of your receiver. On the second, I believe it WAS from the shotgun and the receiver got away when 2 Clemson DBs bounced off of each other trying to make the tackle.

I have no opinion of your vaulted aerial game against the mighty Blue Hose, who apparently had a tough game against the powerhouse North Greenville until pulling away in the 4th. No matter how you spin it, Wofford essentially has no passing game.

And if I wanted to go on about something, it would be the chop block that #85 threw on Breitenstein's TD. That was as cheap a shot as I've seen in a long time.

And that has WHAT to do with our pass defense in defending BQ? We've seriously thrown probably the same 2 or 3 pass plays the last 20 attempts as they all look eerily similar ( Pass on the right to wide out across the middle. Wide receiver streak). They more than likely are. It's not supposed to be Great, it's supposed to be good enough to keep the secondary honest and not in the box the whole game, which it did against Clemson as they backed off on the run game and we were able to rush for 270 afterwards. Yeah we completed only 2 passes, but the starting QB only threw 7 times.....If your QB only had 5 incompletions you'd be jumping for joy. We go for the homerun ball and we were able to do that and have been able to that so far this year.

And, having been at most every Wofford game the last 4 or 5 years, we ARE a shotgun team. We've run probably 60 or 70% of our plays in the last few years from the gun and in the first 2 weeks we've probably run 60 or 70% from under center in the flexbone. The players have even said they've been working out of the pistol this summer and in fall camp but we've seen it few times and when we did it's only been a simple option or handoff, and we see that even sparingly.

As for the chop blcok, From the looks of things it was his assignment to go for the DE, where as the DE tried to make contact with the other TE (who was going for another block and did not engage him in a block). It didn't seem dirty to me, it could have been called a chop block, but I don't think it was dirty. What's your deal? first you praise us then you're going on some tangent against us?

essentially, we don't need to pass 20 times a game effectively. If we get >100 yards passing a game or complete more than 3/4 of our passes, our passing game has done it's job because it's purpose in our offense is a gimmick play or something to keep the secondary honest, because if they sneak up too far we'll burn them. Bersin is a great receiver, who makes plays when you throw it to him (5 catches for about 160 yards so far this year).
