Southeastern Louisiana Shows Off New Lights At Strawberry Stadium

HAMMOND, La. - Southeastern President Randy Moffett along with Director of Athletics Joel Erdmann and representatives of the Student Government Association officially broke ground on the new student-funded parking garage Wednesday evening and with a flip of the switch, showed off its new state of the art lights for adjacent Strawberry Stadium.

The ceremony for the lighting upgrades to Strawberry Stadium and "intermodal transportation facility," funded by a student-assessed fee and scheduled to open in spring 2008, was attended by campus and community members along with the university's cheerleaders, "Spirit of the Southland" band, "Roomie the Lion" and student-athletes from the school's football, volleyball, soccer and softball teams.

The new lighting system is more than three times brighter than the old lights, which served the 70-year-old stadium for decades and were taken down earlier in the summer. Four 100-foot specially engineered concrete light towers, weighing approximately 15 tons apiece and set with 48 1,500-watt bulbs, will project more than 100 candle foot light power, as opposed to the old system's 35-40 candle foot lights.
