Big Sky Conference and addition of new teams
I am just wondering how the BSC will continue to work it's scheduling after both UND, Cal Poly and UC-Davis, join the football ranks next season. Will they split into divisions, or will they work out some rotating schedule because clearly not everyone will be able to play everyone when there are 11 (or 13 ) teams. Does anyone know their plans?
Big Sky Conference and addition of new teams
rotating schedule until the conference goes to 14 teams....

Re: Big Sky Conference and addition of new teams
from what i understand is that when we get 14th team,(SUU, UND, UCD, CP make 13) they will split the division north and south. it was a while back that i heard that and i cant remember where but it sounded reasonable.

Re: Big Sky Conference and addition of new teams
I can see that. Just like the Big 10 split with Nebraska joining. I do wish UND could play Montana and Montana State every year, but I guess they go with the geography and already applied rivals (UND-UNC former NCC foes).CatMan wrote:from what i understand is that when we get 14th team,(SUU, UND, UCD, CP make 13) they will split the division north and south. it was a while back that i heard that and i cant remember where but it sounded reasonable.

Re: Big Sky Conference and addition of new teams
North and South dividing line seem logical like this:
North 6
South 7
Are we really adding one more school and who is it? A non DI to move up or a supposed FBS moving down? San Jose/Idaho. Too bad San Diego can't be the next school.
Looks like Big Sky dropped the ball not making UND/USD a package deal. Letting one in and not both seems really bad. No offense UND fans but I'm sure you can see my point.

Is there still a chance PSU or Sac moves to the WAC? That would make it 12 teams.

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

Not as much as the West and the East:weberwildcat wrote:North and South dividing line seem logical like this:

West:
EWU
PSU
Sac
UCD
CP
NAU
SUU
East
UM
MSU
ISU
WSU
UNC
UND
The West follows the same footprint as the old Pac-10, what the casual DI football fan in that region can relate to. Having the 4 original Big Sky members in the East ensures established, long standing rivalries will stay the same.

The Big Sky should invite Humboldt State. Great programs and a very good school... Good geographical fit nice stadium.
The Big Sky should not invite U of San Diego. Poor facility, not competitive, zero interest a poor fit. I live in San Diego and I have no idea why folk keep saying this would be a good add? It is a good academic school and that is about it.
Last I'd like to propose a moratorium on NDSU hijacked threads.

None taken, yes Fullerton did drop the ball on the USD thing. Can a team from the NAIA jump to DI? Or do you have to be a DII team?weberwildcat wrote:North and South dividing line seem logical like this:

Re: Big Sky Conference and addition of new teams
Im telling you its most likely gonna be Utah Valley or Idaho, the reason its taking so long is probably that UVU and the Big SKy are working on agreements to start a football program and see if it is possible, and as soon as it is, they will get an invite and take it.

Re: Big Sky Conference and addition of new teams
Why in the heck would Foolerton accept a football startup program, particularly one which is a glorified juco? A D-II callup in the right spot would make more sense. And that means San Diego, Humboldt, Central Washington, or the one in CO I've been forbidden from mentioning.

UND has played Humboldt, and Central Washington, so its not like they are strangers to us. I wonder if Central Wash would be more of a rival to EWU than Montana?SuperHornet wrote:Why in the heck would Foolerton accept a football startup program, particularly one which is a glorified juco? UVU is already DI in hoops, and NO Big Sky team including Weber has ever beaten UVU @ UVU, not bad for the little "juco".
UVU just seems like the better fit to me, Centered in geographically, and an already decent Hoops program with an 8,500 seat arena. They may be a startup, but they have a lot of students, and potential.

Re: Big Sky Conference and addition of new teams
Utah Valley has been D-1 for several years now. They play most Big Sky schools in the olympic sports and are competitive. Their enrollment is huge-similar in size to Portland State and Sac State.
They were turned down by the WAC when the WAC added Seattle-reportedly because Utah State blocked them.
An odd number of members is not as big of a deal for football, but a pain in the neck for the other sports so I can see the appeal of getting a 12th all sports member. I''m sure football has to be part of the equation though. A school that doesn't have football and puts all their resources in other sports could have a big advantage in a league like the Big Sky.
I think Idaho is the desired option, but UVU might be plan B. I also think any of the D-2's in the west-whether in the GNAC or the RMAC are not viable options-most small schools in smaller towns with pretty limited potential. Dixie State in St. George might be the exception-but their addition could really hurt SUU. The D-2 school with the most potential is Simon Fraser near Vancouver BC, but the NCAA won't allow Canadian teams in D-1.

Montana and Eastern WA has turned out to be a great rivalry.. Central WA has had some good teams but nothing in comparison to UM and EWU.. Montana looks at EWU no different than they would look at Mont St.. Both are great rivalries.

Re: Big Sky Conference and addition of new teams
but weber has only played 2 times at UVU and it was 2005 and 2006. 06 was one of the worst teams in wsu history. we will likely play them in 2013-14. hopefully it will be a home and home in the same season.Wildcat Ryan wrote:SuperHornet wrote:Why in the heck would Foolerton accept a football startup program, particularly one which is a glorified juco? Re: Big Sky Conference and addition of new teams
Montana and Eastern has developed a nice healthy rivalry but probably not on the same lines as UM-MSU.
I'm not real big on adding any of the GNAC schools - I agree with Cats comments above that they are all mostly small schools in small towns not really close to any sizable population base. The only two viable options from the GNAC are probably Central Washington and Humboldt State. I don't know what CWU's plans are in regards to athletics, but don't expect them to move up. They don't have facilities currently and are located in Ellensburg, a town in the middle of the state not close to any major cities.
I don't know a lot about Humboldt State, although they seem to have ok facilities. Small-ish at 7k, but could easily be expanded by adding end zone seating to bring it to 10k or so.
What about Colorado-Mesa? They have an enrollment of around 9,000 and seem to have somewhat decent facilities. Last year there was an approval to put 8 million into Stocker Stadium.
In reality, I think that the Big Sky needs to be targeting Idaho or San Jose State. Either would be a good fit. I think this is all going to boil down to what happens with the MWC/WAC.
As far as Divisions, I would rather see the Conference split into Pacific/Mountain Divisions - 6 Divisional games, plus play two from the other Divisions.....to include guaranteed "rivalry" games.
Pacific Division
Eastern Washington
Portland State
Sacramento State
Cal-Poly
UC-Davis
Idaho* or Humboldt State
Northern Arizona
Mountain Division
Montana
Montana State
North Dakota
Weber State
Idaho State
Southern Utah
Northern Colorado

Re: Big Sky Conference and addition of new teams
big sky should do NOTHING if it means creating a DI school. If there is a drop down, take them. do not force it. it will be a waste of time. we dont NEED 14 schools. are the current 13 stable and planning to stay long term? we dont even know this.
